  6. The Mac-FTP-list lists over 200 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes),
  7. over 65 Mac web pages, and contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
  8. ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs decompress
  9. and decode which files.  Also there is a section on how to use certain files.

  65. For folks new to ftp
  66. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  67. The first column of stuff in the data below is the site name.  Usually you 
  68. can either type in the URL ftp://sitename/file/pathway/ on a Web browser or
  69. run ftp from a unix shell account and type open and then the site name.  But
  70. some computers don't like the names (or don't have all of them) and prefer 
  71. the next column of stuff, the IP addresses.  If you try either method with 
  72. the IP number and it doesn't bite, it isn't gonna work.
  73. To allow the best chance to connect to a site almost all of HTML version's
  74. link are both names and IP#.  The main exceptions are 'dymatic addressing' and
  75. limited access sites.
  76.  
  77. Most mac ftp sites have encoded their files with BinHex 4.0 which end in the
  78. suffix ".hqx". To decode these files, you can just download them to your mac
  79. and use Stuffit Expander to decode and expand them, reguardless of whether
  80. they are Stuffit (.sit) or Compact Pro (.cpt).  This is much better than in
  81. the old days when you had to download a file to your mac, use Compact Pro or
  82. Stuffit to decode it, and THEN, figure which program you needed use to
  83. decompress it.

  85. In days long past one had to have a unix shell account to use FTP.  Today
  86. there are a whole host of options available - from commercial services 
  87. such as CompuServe and AOL to local and national ISPs. In addition there 
  88. are dozens of communication programs for the Macintosh that that make using 
  89. Telnet and FTP much easier now than years ago.  A list of such programs 
  90. can be found at both Joel Klecker's (formally David L. Oppenheimer's)

  95. many info-mac mirrors.

  97. On a unix shell account, ftp prompts you for a username and password; you
  98. send "anonymous" as the username, and your email address as the password. 
  99. Most browsers will do this automatically if they have been set up properly.  
  100. For the few that don't or can't try doing your URLs in this manner -
  101. ftp://anonymous:email_address@site.name/  For Mike Gleason email_address 
  102. would be mgleason@cse.unl.edu and for me it would be BruceG6069@aol.com.
  103. I should mention that browsers make poor FTP clients and can generate "This
  104. FTP server does not support passive mode" on the sites with the 'DM' note. 
  105. Also there are a few sites that use non-standard names (with spaces or non-
  106. printable [>ascii 127] characters) which can create problems for both unix
  107. shell accounts and browsers.  It is better to use something like Anarchie or
  108. Fetch for ftp either of which avoids this problem.

  136. Keep in mind that some sites may disenable the anonymous login for a while: 
  137. during certain hours of the day, for maintainance reasons, or because of too
  138. much heavy traffic.  Most will tell you the reason for refusing anonymous
  139. login, but a few will say nothing more than "User anonymous unknown" or
  140. "connection refused". Keep this in mind when a site on this list results in
  141. either of these responses.

  144. Power User Notes:
  145. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  146. If you want to read a file on a remote site, but don't want download it, and
  147. are not using a WWW browser, quit ftp, page the file, then restart ftp, try
  148. "get myfile.txt -" and ftp will dump the file to your terminal.  Also exploit
  149. ftp's pipe and shell abilities, like "get myfile.txt |more" will do the same
  150. as above, except using "more" to page the file.  On the other hand, Web
  151. browsers can read these files on-line without all this hand waving.
  152.  
  153. If you need to know the IP address of an ftp site, a common unix program
  154. called "nslookup" can help.  With some versions, "nslookup ftp.apple.com"
  155. would spit out "130.43.2.3."  Doing the reverse is dependent on how your 
  156. site is set up.  Some sites require reversing the address and using the 
  157. in-addr.arpa domain with the lookup type set to "ANY", while others can 
  158. use the address as written.  There is now a Mac version of this program 
  159. called DNS lookup.
  160.  
  161. Most files you'll get off ftp are in binhex (.hqx) format.  Since almost all
  162. present modems support V.42bis and MNP5 compression (4:1 and 2:1 respectivly)
  163. it has actually become faster to download them to your machine and THEN decode
  164. them.  The reason is simple; text files like .hqx, .uu, and .txt can be
  165. compressed allowing the modem to increase throughput for these files by 50% to
  166. 100%.  Already compressed files like .bin, .sit, and .pit receive little if
  167. any benefit from V.42bis and MNP5.   This results in .hqx files being
  168. downloaded as fast or faster than .bin files.   This combined with background
  169. decoding/decompression (like StuffIt Expander) and Web browsers has effectivly
  170. rendered downloading .hqx to an unix box and decoding it there obsolete.

  233. .arj
  234.      PC format common to European sites. Decoded by unArjMac, DeArj, and
  235.      SITEX10.EXE (win).
  236. .dd
  237.      Disk Doubler {Mac} format. Decoded by DDExpand and DiskDoubler.
  238. .exe
  239.      DOS/Windows executable file (program); also used to create
  240.      self-extracting archives. An .exe file used as a self-extracting
  241.      archive can usually be decompressed with Stuffit Expander w/ DSEE.
  242. .html (.htm)
  243.      WWW document. Used by WWW browsers such as Netscape and lynx.
  244. .image
  245.      Mac disk image. Decoded and/or mounted by DiskCopy, Disk Image Mounter, 
  246.      Disk Charmer, ImageMaster, and ShrinkWrap.
  247. .img/.ima
  248.      Microsoft Disk Image Utility and Winimage formats, respectivly. Decoded
  249.      and/or mounted by ShrinkWrap. Note that .img is also used as an graphic
  250.      file extension and needs GraphicConverter to view.
  251. .lzh
  252.      old PC/Amiga format, replaced by .arc and .zip; decoded by macunpack,
  253.      MacLHA, and French KISS 2.1.1.
  254. .pit
  255.      old {~1989} Mac compression format created by PackIt programs, replaced
  256.      by .sit. In general, a program that handles .sit files can decode .pit
  257.      files as well.
  258. .pkg
  259.      AppleLink package format, replaced by .sit. Decoded by all present Mac
  260.      StuffIt programs.
  261. .sea
  262.      Mac format, decompresses itself and needs no external programs.
  263. .shar
  264.      Unix shell archive. Decoded by Unshar.
  265. .taz
  266.      another name for .tar.Z
  267. .tgz
  268.      another name for .tar.z and .tar.gz {do not confuse with .tar.Z}.
  269. .txt
  270.      ASCII text file. Other suffixes include .abs and .doc.
  271. .z
  272.      Early {~1993} suffix for Gzip files. Due to confusion with the UNIX
  273.      'compress' suffix {.Z} it was abandoned in favor of the .gz suffix.
  274. .zoo
  275.      old {~1989} PC/Amiga format, replaced by .arc. Decoded by MacZoo and
  276.      MacBooz.
  277.     
  278. CAUTION: While Gzip is aimed at replacing the .Z format, they are 
  279. _different_ unix compression formats, and the suffixes are NOT inchangable.  
  280. Many sites now support on-the-fly translation of these formats; just type in
  281. the file name minus the .Z or .gz suffix.
  282.  
  283. WARNING: .hqx, .txt, and .uu files are the ONLY files that can be downloaded
  284. in ASCII mode; all others must be downloaded in BINARY {IMAGE} mode for the
  285. file to decompress properly.  This is especially true of ".bin" and
  286. "unstuffed" files.  Otherwise you will get errors like "unreadable file" or
  287. "file is corrupt" when you try to decompress them.

  295. Finding files and programs
  296. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  297. If you are looking for a specific mac file or program you will want to use 
  298. one or more of the many databases or search engines available some of which
  299. are listed in the Web section.  Since I only keep track of sites I have no
  300. idea where individual files are located, which is why I have included lists 
  301. of archie sites and Web search engines.  Please note that database 
  302. information is not always up-to-date and files and sites listed may no 
  303. longer exist.
  304.  
  305. Using files
  306. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  307. Here are some tips if you have downloaded a file and are not sure how to open
  308. it.  First, do NOT ask people what program opens the file.  Odds are that no
  309. one will know how to deal with the file.
  310.  
  311. The reason is that DOS's three letter extension allows 26^3 or 17,576 possible
  312. file formats.  The Mac is even more of a nightmare with -two- four letter tags
  313. each one allowing 250^4 or 3,906,250,000 different possible combinations.  So,
  314. on the Mac not only does one have over -3 billion- possible formats to choose
  315. from but also 3 billion possible -programs- to choose from.  Compounding the
  316. problem is the fact that certain three letter extensions can really be any one
  317. of several different formats and in DOS people create their own three letter
  318. extensions.
  319.  
  320. The best thing to do is to try and see if there is any way to figure out 
  321. what -broad- type of file it is: Word Processor, picture, sound, or movie.
  322.  
  323. Word Processor
  324.      RealView 2.2 (/info-mac/text/) will read most of these out there;
  325.      Adobe Acrobat Reader (.pdf) or a commerical Word Processor such as
  326.      MS Word or WordPerfect for the rest.
  327. Pictures
  328.      GraphicConverter (Shareware, $30-$35, /info-mac/gst/grf/,
  329.      http://members.aol.com/lemkesoft/) is one of the most powerful
  330.      shareware graphic programs for the Mac, able to view, create,
  331.      and edit over 77 different graphic formats including .gif,
  332.      .png, and .jpeg. But even it cannot view Photoshop, Canvas, Pixel
  333.      Paint, or .cel formats.

  337. Sound files
  338.      Sound App 2.2.1 (Freeware, /info-mac/gst/snd/) will play most sound
  339.      formats out there including .mod, .wav, .au, and .aiff.
  340. Movie files
  341.      Sparkle 2.4.5 (/info-mac/gst/mov/) for QT and .mov formats; MS
  342.      Internet Explorer allows viewing of most .avi formats.
  343. Other files
  344.      Hopefully there is a document file that tells you what is needed
  345.      otherwise it is pretty much a lost cause.
