**GETTING STARTED**
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum:

INSTALLATION & START-UP
Windows 95 Systems
1. Turn on your system.
2. In the apropriate directory double-click w95inst.
3. On the installation screen, choose OK to use the default directory C:\SLAM,
or use the directory box to create a custom directory, and then choose OK.
4. Choose the FULL installation type.
5. When installation is complete, double-click on the SLAM æN JAM icon in the
window that appears, or select SLAM æN JAM from the Start/Programs menu.
6. YouÆll see a series of logos and a game demo, and then the SLAM æN JAM
MAIN MENU will appear. (Press SPACEBAR to bypass the opening displays.)
MS-DOS Systems
1. Turn on your system and set your video display to at least 640x480
in 256 colors.
2. In the apropriate directory run dosinst.exe.
3. Choose the FULL installation type and then follow the prompts on screen.
4. When installation is complete, enter RUNSLAM at the game directoryÆs
DOSprompt to start the game.
5. YouÆll see a series of logos and a game demo, and then the SLAM æN JAM
MAIN MENU will appear. (Press SPACEBAR to bypass the opening displays.)
Note - If you change any system components such as RAM or the video or sound card,
you should re-install the software.

JOYSTICK CALIBRATION
If youÆre going to use a joystick, you must calibrate it before starting play. On the
MAIN MENU, highlight OPTIONS and press ENTER. On the OPTIONS menu, highlight
CALIBRATE JOYSTICK and press ENTER. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the
procedure.
**THE MAIN MENU**
Use the MAIN MENU options to set up your game.
1. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW on the keyboard to highlight the option you want.
2. Press ENTER or SPACEBAR to select the highlighted option.
**EXHIBITION GAME**
Match your chosen team against any other team in a single game. You can play against
another person or against the computer. With network connection, up to 4 people can
play simultaneously. EXHIBITION GAMES do not affect season or playoff standings.
At the MAIN MENU, press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight EXHIBITION GAME (if not
already highlighted), and press ENTER or SPACEBAR.
On the EXHIBITION GAME MENU, press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight the option of
your choice, and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to select it.
HOME TEAM
The HOME TEAM wears white and starts the game protecting the near court.
1. Press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to cycle through the teams. Each team listing
shows its name, division (such as PACIFIC) and conference (such as WEST).
2. Press the DOWN ARROW to highlight PLAYER, and press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW
to designate who controls the team. Choose PLAYER 1, PLAYER 2, PLAYERS 1 & 2
(both players control a man on the same team) or COMPUTER, in FRANCHISE or
MANUAL MODE.
* FRANCHISE: You control the same man on both offense and defense, no
matter which player has the ball. You can change your Franchise
Player in mid-game during one of your timeouts.
* MANUAL: On offense, you control the player with the ball, and your
control switches automatically as the ball changes hands. On defense,
you manually switch control to the man nearest the ball by pressing
the Pass button (keyboard default: SPACEBAR). Controlled players are
indicated by a team arrow.
Note - Up to 4 people can play simultaneously with network configuration.
AWAY TEAM
Designate an AWAY TEAM and PLAYER in the same way as for the HOMETEAM.
QUARTER
Press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to set the time period, in minutes, for all quarters.
MAIN MENU
Press ENTER or SPACEBAR to exit to the MAIN MENU.
CONTINUE
Press ENTER or SPACEBAR to advance to the SCOUTING REPORT.
THE SCOUTING REPORT
This screen shows the HOME and AWAY TEAM starters and their statistics, and each
teamÆs overall league ranking.
Abbreviations
HGT Height
SHOOTS Shooting percentage
SPD Court speed
BH Ball handling
DEF Defensive rating
To substitute a bench player into the starting lineup:
1. Highlight STARTERS and press ENTER or SPACEBAR.
2. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight the starter you want to replace, and
press ENTER or SPACEBAR.
3. The highlight jumps to the bench. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight the
substitute player you want to bring in, and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to make
the switch.
4. Highlight CONTINUE and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to exit the screen.
To choose your Franchise Player:
In FRANCHISE MODE, you can now choose your Franchise Player. The FRANCHISE screen
appears, showing the starting lineup. Press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to highlight your
player choice, and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to begin the game. (In MANUAL MODE, the
game starts when you CONTINUE from the SCOUTING REPORT.)
**NEW SEASON**
Set up and play a full or short season with any team against a friend or the
computer, or watch two chosen teams play it out in a computer simulated game. You can
save the season calendar and all player stats after each game in order to keep the
season going.
At the MAIN MENU, highlight NEW SEASON, and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to display the
NEW SEASON screen. Then press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight an option choice.
SEASON
Press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to choose the season length:
FULL SEASON 82 games
EACH TEAM TWICE 56 games
EACH TEAM ONCE 28 games
HALF THE TEAMS 13 or 14 games
HOME TEAM, QUARTER & MAIN MENU
Use these options in the same way as for EXHIBITION GAME. In SEASON games, the
computer always controls the AWAY TEAM.
LOAD SEASON
Use a season that you previously set up and saved. A list box appears. Press the UP
or DOWN ARROW to highlight the name of a saved season, and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to
load it.
SAVE SEASON
As soon as the new season starts, the SAVE SEASON option becomes available. To save
the current season, highlight SAVE SEASON and press ENTER or SPACEBAR. A list box
appears. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight an empty slot and press ENTER or
SPACEBAR. Type in a season name or identifier, and press ENTER or SPACEBAR again.
CONTINUE
Press ENTER or SPACEBAR to advance to the SEASON CALENDAR.
SEASON CALENDAR
The SEASON CALENDAR shows all the teams you are scheduled to play and in what order.
The upcoming team is highlighted. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight either of
the following options:
Simulate
To simulate a game without actually playing it, highlight YES and press ENTER or
SPACEBAR. The computer simulates the game and immediately displays the results.
Controls
Choose who controls your team at HOME and AWAY, in FRANCHISE or MANUAL MODE.
Main Menu, Load Season & Save Season
Use these options in the same way as for NEW SEASON.
Continue
From the SEASON CALENDAR, youÆll CONTINUE to the SCOUTING REPORT.
**CONTINUE SEASON**
Resume a season youÆve previously saved. At the MAIN MENU, highlight CONTINUE SEASON,
and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to display the CONTINUE SEASON screen. Use the options in
the same way as for NEWSEASON.
**NEW PLAYOFFS**
Pick a team and play until you take home the championship. You play only post-season
matches. At the MAIN MENU, highlight NEW PLAYOFFS and press ENTER or SPACEBAR. On the
NEW PLAYOFFS screen, make the following selections:
QUALIFIERS
Use the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to choose:
RANDOM The computer selects random teams for the playoffs.
LAST SEASON Use qualifying teams from the last season played.
TEAM
Use this option in the same way as for EXHIBITION GAME.
SERIES
Press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to highlight an option for determining the winner.
STANDARD Best 5 of 7
SHORT Best 2 of 3
KNOCKOUT Best of 1
QUARTER & MAIN MENU
Use these in the same way as for EXHIBITION GAME.
LOAD PLAYOFFS
Load previously saved PLAYOFFS.
CONTINUE
Press ENTER or SPACEBAR to advance to the PLAYOFF TREE, which shows how teams are
paired for the PLAYOFFS. Press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to view all the information.
Once you CONTINUE, you will have the option to SAVE PLAYOFFS.
PLAYOFFS SCREEN
This screen provides additional options.
Home Team & Away Team
Check the HOME and AWAY TEAMS, for information only.
Simulate, Controls, Main Menu, Load Playoffs & Save Playoffs
Use these options in the same way as for NEW SEASON.
Continue
Advance to the SCOUTING REPORT.
**CONTINUE PLAYOFFS**
Resume playoffs youÆve previously saved. At the MAIN MENU, highlight CONTINUE
PLAYOFFS and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to display the CONTINUE PLAYOFFS screen. Use
the options in the same way as for NEWPLAYOFFS. After choosing CONTINUE, youÆll
view the PLAYOFF TREE, which shows your teamÆs bracket, upcoming opponents, and
current playoff win-loss record. Press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to see more of the
PLAYOFF TREE.
**OPTIONS**
At the MAIN MENU, choose OPTIONS and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to display the OPTIONS
menu. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight options, and press ENTER or SPACEBAR
to display submenus.
CONFIGURE GAME
On the CONFIGURE GAME menu, press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight options, and
press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to change settings.
Difficulty
Choose the computer playerÆs difficulty level. This will be the skill level of the
opposing team when you play against the computer.
Boundaries
ON turns the ball over to the other team if the ball-handler steps out of bounds.
OFF allows players to step out of bounds without a turnover.
Fouls
Set the level of referee intervention.
Fatigue
With ON-MANUAL, you control when to substitute fatigued players. With ON-AUTO, the
computer automatically substitutes fatigued players. OFF disables player fatigue.
Switch Ends
ON means that the teams will switch courts at the half. OFF prevents it.
Continue
Highlight CONTINUEand press ENTER or SPACEBAR to exit to the OPTIONS menu.
CONFIGURE SOUND
On the CONFIGURE SOUND menu, press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight the options,
and press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to adjust settings.
Music, Sound FX & Commentary
Set volume levels.
Continue
Highlight CONTINUEand press ENTER or SPACEBAR to exit to the OPTIONS menu.
CONFIGURE CONTROLS
1. On the CONFIGURE CONTROLS menu, press the UP or DOWN ARROW to highlight
PLAYER 1 or PLAYER 2.
2. Press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to toggle between SIMPLE and COMPLEX CONTROLS.
COMPLEX CONTROLS offer Steal and Turbo actions, which are disabled in SIMPLE
CONTROLS.
3. Press ENTER or SPACEBAR to move the highlight to the controls column for the
player youÆve selected. Question marks (???) appear next to each action.
4. Press the keyboard key or gamepad button you want to map to that action.
Continue until all actions have a key/button selected.
5. Highlight MAIN MENUand press ENTER or SPACEBAR to exit.
LOAD OPTIONS
Load a set of previously saved options. On the LOAD OPTIONS menu, press the UP or
DOWN ARROW to highlight a slot, and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to load.
SAVE OPTIONS
Save the current set of options. On the SAVE OPTIONS menu, press the UP or DOWN ARROW
to highlight a slot, and press ENTER or SPACEBAR. Type in a name or identifier, and
press ENTER or SPACEBAR again.
CALIBRATE JOYSTICK
If youÆre going to use a joystick, you must calibrate it before configuring the
controls. Follow the on-screen prompts on the CALIBRATE JOYSTICK screen to perform
the calibration.
MAIN MENU
Press ENTER or SPACEBAR to exit to the MAIN MENU.
**EXIT TO DOS**
Select this option from the MAIN MENU to quit SLAM æN JAM.
**ON THE FLOOR**
PLAYERS
Controlled Players
A colored arrow shows your controlled player and his position designation. In multi-
player games, each player has an different arrow color.
* In FRANCHISE MODE, you always control your selected Franchise Player, on both
offense and defense.
* In MANUAL MODE, you control the ball-handler on offense. Your control
automatically switches as the ball changes hands. On defense, press the Pass
button (keyboard default: SPACEBAR) to switch your control to the player
nearest the ball.
Player Designations
Each player is designated by position. Player positions affect their shooting skills:
* CENTERS, the tallest players, block and shoot well inside the paint.
* POWER FORWARDS are big and strong enough to dominate a game.
* GUARDS are the best ball-handlers.
* FORWARDS and GUARDS shoot better from the perimeter than centers do.

F Forward
PF Power Forward
C Center
Player Skills
Each playerÆs skill levels are measured in statistical percentages. 100% equals the
highest possible skill level. Statistics appear on the PAUSE/STATS screen, and at
the end of every quarter. Press the Pause button (keyboard default: ESC) to view the
PAUSE/STATS screen.
Player Stamina
When FATIGUE is on, a playerÆs performance is measured by his stamina (STAM) as shown
on the STATISTICS screen. 100% STAM equals a player at his peak performance level. As
the STAM % decreases, the playerÆs performance decreases as well. Benched players will
recover their STAM, so substitute wisely.
CALLING PLAYS
Setting Picks
On offense, press the Pick button (keyboard default: N) to set a pick with your
teammate, then move around him to lose the opponent. Hit the jump shot or drive to
the basket.
Isolation
On offense, press the Isolate button (keyboard default: M) to clear teammates from
the lane and go one-on-one against your defender.
Double-Team
On defense, press the Pick or Isolate button to double-team from the left or right
side, respectively.
FREE THROWS
During free throws, youÆll see two baskets: one stationary and one moving left to
right. To shoot, hold down the Shoot button (keyboard default: ENTER), and release
when both baskets align.
Hint - The basket moves more slowly for better shooters.
FOULS
Each player is allowed 6 personal fouls per game. After the sixth foul, a player
fouls out, and gameplay is stopped until the fouled-out player is substituted.
**PAUSING THE GAME**
Press the Pause button (keyboard default: ESC) to view the PAUSE/STATS screen. You
can view player stats, resume the game, view a replay, or quit. When your team has
possession, you can call a timeout to substitute players or change your Franchise
Player.
STATISTICS
Statistics appear on the PAUSE/STATS screen, and at the end of a quarter. The display
shows the playing stats for the team starters. At half time and at the end of the
game, detailed stats are displayed for all players. After a game, an MVP is selected.
In SEASON mode, Season standings and the Top 10 Season Leaders in all categories are
displayed. Press the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW to view all the information.
Note - The STATISTICS screen displays the data collected in the ROSTER file. You can
edit this file with a text editor, and any changes will be reflected in player skills.
NO TECH SUPPORT IS OFFERED FOR EDITED FILES, SO BE SURE TO BACK UP THE ROSTERFILE
BEFORE EDITING. If you experience problems with gameplay after editing the file,
reinstall your original software.
RESUME GAME
Highlight this option and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to resume the game.
REPLAY
Highlight REPLAY and press ENTER or SPACEBAR. Use these controls to see a repeat of
the last play:
X Replay at normal speed.
C Tap for frame advance, hold for fast-forward.
Z Tap for frame rewind; hold for fast rewind.
LEFT or RIGHT ARROW Move the fast-break camera.
ESC Exit to PAUSE menu.
TIMEOUTS
Only the offensive team can call a timeout.
Each team has 7 timeouts per game. Call a timeout when you want to substitute players,
change a FranchisePlayer, or attempt to break the opposing teamÆs hot streak.
1. Press ESC when your team has possession.
2. Highlight TIMEOUT and press ENTER or SPACEBAR. You now have the
additional options to SUBSTITUTE players and change your FRANCHISE
player (FRANCHISE MODE only).
3. Highlight your selection and press ENTER or SPACEBAR. See instructions
for substituting players and changing the Franchise Player.
QUIT GAME
Highlight this option and press ENTER or SPACEBAR to terminate the game.
**HOOP HINTS**
* To dunk or execute special shots on offense, press the Turbo button
while pressing the Shoot button.
* Tap the Shoot button to pump-fake opponents.
* Press the Steal button to shake off defenders and possibly knock them
to the floor, giving you the open shot.
* An alley-oop occurs when the ball is passed to a wide-open player who
is close or on his way to the basket.
* On defense, use your center to control the paint. Protect against
easy drives to the hoop by blocking shots and moving
bodies.
**NETWORK CONFIGURATION**
With network configuration, up to 4 people can play SLAM æN JAM simultaneously. Each
player can be human or computer controlled. The network options are:
* 2 players on the same computer (no network).
* 2 players on 2 different computers via serial connection.
* 2 players on 2 different computers via IPX network.
* 3 players on 2 different computers via serial connection (2 players
on 1 computer).
* 3 players on 3 different computers via IPX network.
* 4 players on 2 different computers via serial connection (2 players
on each computer).
* 4 players on 3 different computers via IPX network (2 players on 1
computer).
* 4 players on 4 different computers via IPX network.
To run SLAM æN JAM with a serial cable connection:
1. Connect one end of the cable to each computer.
2. At the SLAM æN JAM directoryÆs DOS prompt, enter RUNSLAM -COM xx,
where xx is the number of your serial port, usually 1 or 2. All
players must use the same number.
To start IPX network play:
1. Load all your necessary network drivers for IPX protocol.
2. At the SLAM æN JAM directoryÆs DOS prompt, enter RUNSLAM -IPX xx,
where xx is the port number, between 1 and 65535. All players must
use the same number.
Once either of the above networking options has been enabled, proceed with the
following instructions to start play:
1. Highlight NETWORK on the MAIN MENU and press ENTER.
2. Enter a name for LOCAL PLAYER 1 and press ENTER. If 2 people are
playing on the same computer, enter a name for LOCAL PLAYER 2 before
pressing ENTER.
3. Highlight CONTINUE and press ENTER.
4. On the list, highlight either START NEW GAME or a game already
started, and press ENTER. If more than 2 people are playing, the
first 2 people to log on to the network will be on the same team.
5. Select teams, playing modes, and all game options as described in
different sections of this manual, and start playing.
**TROUBLESHOOTING**
SLAM æN JAM includes a Readme file with additional information. Please refer to this
file if you have any problems with the following items:
