{11} {1,13,80,12} Page Setup
PAGE SETUP MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to set up the page specifications to be used
when printing records. The Page Setup window allows you to specify
lines per page, characters per line, left and right margins, as well
as page break, page numbering, and record information options. The
page is formatted using ASCII characters, and does not require a specific
brand or type of printer. If your printer is incapable of printing the
entire PC character set, some foreign and line draw characters may be
missing or garbled.
{12} {1,13,80,12} Print Menu Item
PRINT MENU ITEM

displayed records. The records are printed to the default DOS
printer. You will be asked for confirmation before printing is started.
If you desire to specify lines per page, characters per line, or margins,
select the Page Setup menu item first. The page is formatted using ASCII
characters, and does not require a specific brand or type of printer. If
your printer is incapable of printing the entire PC character set, some
foreign and line draw characters may be missing or garbled.
{13} {1,13,80,12} About
ABOUT ROMWARE MENU ITEM
This menu item displays the ROMWARE copyright notice window in the lower
right hand corner of the screen. Press any key to remove the window.
{14} {1,13,80,12} Quit
QUIT MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to exit ROMWARE and return to DOS.
You will be asked for confirmation before exiting.
{15} {1,13,80,12} Select Index
INDEX TO SEARCH MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to select the index you wish to search.
An index is a list of all the words or phrases in a field or set of
fields in the application. Indexes can be thought of as topics; so
selecting a specific index is the same as selecting the specific topic
you wish to search. This menu item may be selected at any time,
and should be used whenever you want to change the index of the
current search method. By default, the first index is selected.
{16} {1,13,80,12} Select Databases
SELECT DATABASES MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to select the databases you wish to search.
A ROMWARE application is made up of one or more databases. Each
database is a set of related records. Selecting the appropriate
databases is the quickest method to limit your searches to a subset
of the application's data. By default, all databases are searched.
{17} {1,13,80,12} Select Fields
SELECT FIELDS TO DISPLAY MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to select the fields you want to display.
This menu item is only relevant during record display, and has no effect
on any of the search methods. A ROMWARE record is made up of one or
more fields. Each field contains a specific piece of information.
However, a single field may span across many lines, and a record may
consist of a variable number of fields. By default, all fields are
displayed.
{18} {1,13,80,12} TOC
TABLE OF CONTENTS MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to open the Table of Contents window. This
menu item is only available if your application contains a Table of
Contents; not all applications contain one. A Table of Contents
searches for a series of sequential related records in the same way
a Table of Contents in a book can be used to find the a series of
related pages. This is the easiest search method if you are very
familiar with the structure and organization of the application.
{19} {1,13,80,12} Word Search
FIND A WORD MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to quickly search for a word or phrase
in a specific index. This is the easiest search method to use if
you are unfamiliar with the structure of the application, and should
satisfy the majority of your searching needs. In addition, this
search method should usually be employed before any other in order
to see the amount of information returned. If the quantity returned
is too large, use one of the other search methods to refine the search
as necessary.
{20} {1,13,80,12} QBE
SEARCH ACROSS INDEXES MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to quickly search for words or phrases
across one or more indexes. There is an implied "AND" between each
word or phrase in this search method. This means that the search
only returns records containing ALL of the words and phrases in the
indexes you specify. This is the easiest way to refine a search
if the Find a Word search returns too many records.
{21} {1,13,80,12} Boolean Query
BOOLEAN QUERY MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to search for words or phrases
in one or more indexes. You may specify one of the four standard
boolean connectors (AND, OR, NOT, XOR) to between each word
or phrase. This is the most powerful search method, but also the
most complex. The main virtue of this search method is the ability
to refine a search so that it returns only the records you want.
{NP}
BOOLEAN QUERY MENU ITEM
The four boolean connectors work as follows:
OR - Returns records containing either of the search items,
e.g., "THIS" OR "THAT" returns records containing either
the item "THIS" OR the item "THAT".
AND - Returns records containing both of the search items,
e.g., "THIS" AND "THAT" returns records containing both
the item "THIS" AND the item "THAT".
(continued)
{NP}
BOOLEAN QUERY MENU ITEM
(continued from previous page)
NOT - Returns records that do not contain the search item,
e.g., NOT "THIS" only returns records that do not contain
the item "THIS".
XOR - Returns records containing either, but not both, of the search
items, e.g., "THIS" XOR "THAT" returns records containing either
the item "THIS" or the item "THAT", but not both items.
{22} {1,13,80,12} Display Counts Menu Item
DISPLAY COUNTS MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to select whether or not counts of
total item occurrences appear in the word and index lists. A check
mark by this item means that the counts will be displayed; similarly,
absence of the check mark means that counts will not be displayed. In
the Index to Search window, the counts reflects the total number of
items in the index. In word lists, the counts reflect the total number
of occurrences of the word in the selected databases. If an item is very
long, you may need to turn counts off to see the item completely.
{25} {1,13,80,12} Single Record Menu Item
SINGLE RECORD MODE MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to select whether or not records are
displayed one at a time or as a continuous stream. A check mark by
this item means that the records will be displayed one at a time;
similarly, absence of the check mark means that records will be
displayed in a continuous stream. If you are displaying records one
at a time, you will have to explicitly move to the previous or next
records; if not, you can merely scroll through the current records.
{23} {1,13,80,12} Field Names Menu Item
FIELD NAMES MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to select whether or not field names are
displayed while viewing records. For large, full text database, it
is often useful to turn off the field names to facilitate viewing.
A check mark by this item means that the field names will be displayed;
similarly, absence of the check mark means that field names will not be
displayed.
{24} {1,13,80,12} Record Separator Menu Item
RECORD SEPARATOR MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to select whether or not horizontal lines
(record separators) are used to separate multiple records. A check
mark by this item means that the lines will be displayed; similarly,
absence of the check mark means that the lines will not be displayed.
If the separators are not displayed, multiple records will be separated
by a blank line. Record separators will not be seen if your search
returns a single record, or if you have set the record display to
Single Record Mode.
{26} {1,13,80,12} Auto Graphic Menu Item
AUTO GRAPHIC MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to select whether or not pictures will
be displayed automatically when the index to search contains a
picture name. A check mark by this item means that pictures will
be displayed when using the Find a Word search on an index containing
a picture name; similarly, absence of the check mark means that
the Find a Word search works like normal. If the index does not
contain a picture name, the Find a Word search works normally,
regardless of this setting.
{27} {1,13,80,12} Auto Audio Menu Item
AUTO AUDIO SEPARATOR MENU ITEM

{29} {1,13,80,12} Change Colors Menu Item
CHANGE COLORS MENU ITEM
This menu item allows you to modify the colors used to display all
of the items onscreen, including the search windows, the record display,
the menu bar, and the message line. You can alter these settings to
enhance legibility on your monitor, or you can simply alter the settings
to use colors you find more pleasing.

FIND A WORD WINDOW
You may have noticed that the word list at the bottom of the screen
moves to the closest matching word as you type. This is because
ROMWARE keeps a sorted list of all of the words in the field or fields
in the index. Therefore, if a word does not appear in the word list for
an index, it does not appear in the field or fields the index is based
on. This improvement over traditional databases means that you never have
to perform a search to find out if a word exists; you can immediately
determine whether or not a word exists by examining the word list.
{NP}
FIND A WORD WINDOW
In addition, because ROMWARE is automatically moving to the closest
matching word as you type, you may not need to type the entire word.
You only need to type enough letters to move the highlight bar to the
correct item. Alternately, you can type just enough letters to move
the word into view in the list, then move into the word list using
the TAB key and select the correct item using the UP and DOWN ARROW
keys.
{40} {1,13,80,12} Search Across Indexes Window

BOOLEAN QUERY WINDOW
You may have noticed that the word list at the bottom of the screen
moves to the closest matching word as you type. This is because
ROMWARE keeps a sorted list of all of the words in the field or fields
in the index. Therefore, if a word does not appear in the word list for
an index, it does not appear in the field or fields the index is based
on. This improvement over traditional databases means that you never have
to perform a search to find out if a word exists; you can immediately
determine whether or not a word exists by examining the word list.
{NP}
BOOLEAN QUERY WINDOW
In addition, because ROMWARE is automatically moving to the closest
matching word as you type, you may not need to type the entire word.
You only need to type enough letters to move the highlight bar to the
correct item. Alternately, you can type just enough letters to move
the word into view in the list, then move into the word list using
the TAB key and select the correct item using the UP and DOWN ARROW
keys.

BOOLEAN QUERY WINDOW
This search method allows you to specify which of the four
boolean connectors (AND, OR, NOT, XOR) to use to refine the search.
Otherwise, it is similar to the Search Across Indexes method.
The main difference is that the Boolean Query only has a single
entry field available by default; all others must be explicitly
created. The boolean connectors are evaluated from top to bottom.
No boolean connectors may be selected for the first item.
{NP}

{NP}

{NP}
RECORD DISPLAY WINDOW
Record continue mode allows you to view all the records in the
database as a single, continuous stream. Your position relative
to the current search record is displayed at the bottom. For
greatest speed, hits are not highlighted unless the relative offset
is zero. Therefore, only CTRL PAGE UP/DN should be used to find
hits. In record continue mode, the record movement keys move between
records in the search, not between records in the database.
