  1.        How to obtain updates to the shareware version over the net:

  3. If you have FTP access, you can always get the most up-to date version of
  4. F-PROT by anonymous FTP from a number of sites.  Our primary method of
  5. distribution is through Simtel and Garbo, and all "mirrors" of those sites
  6. should always carry an up-to-date version of F-PROT.
  7.

  103. For people in remote corners of the world, without reliable FTP or WWW
  104. access, we offer the "F-PROT by E-mail" service.
  105.  
  106. To use this service, you MUST be able to handle multiple-part uu-, xx-
  107. or mime-encoded mail messages.  Please do not waste your (and ours) time by
  108. using this service if you do not already have the software to decode such
  109. messages, and keep in mind that this service is intended for those who
  110. have no other alternative...that is, no FTP or WWW access.
  111.  
  112. To use this service you send an E-mail message to f-prot-update@complex.is
  113. This is an automated mail server.  No human will see your message, and if
  114. it does not match the format described below, the mail server will just
  115. respond with a standard help message.
  116.  
  117. For now the following commands are accepted by the mail server. 
  118.  
  119. Please note that the commands must be in the body of the message, not in
  120. the subject line or the header.
  121.  
  122. send-as: form
  123. send-part: part_num
  124. send-size: size_in_kilobytes
  125. send-version
  126. subscribe notice
  127. unsubscribe notice
  128. check notice
  129.  
  130. The 'send-as' command signifies the encoding that should be used in sending
  131. the file by E-mail.  'form' must be one of: 'uue', 'xxe' or 'mime'.
  132. If the 'send-as' command is 'mime', F-PROT will be sent as a MIME message
  133. with Content-Type: message/partial.
  134.  
  135. send-part: requests transmission of a specific part.  You should only use
  136. this command if you are requesting re-transmission of a corrupted part.
  137.  
  138. send-size: requests that a specific size (in KB) is used for each part.
  139. The size must be between 20 and 60.  
  140.  
  141. If the 'send-as' command is 'mime', F-PROT will be sent as a MIME message
  142. with Content-Type: message/partial.
  143.  
  144. send-version is used to check which version is currently available.  Using
  145. "finger f-prot@complex.is" is a better method, however.
  146.  
  147. Examples:

  149. To get an uuencoded copy of the current version of F-PROT, send a message
  150. containing the following in the body to 'f-prot-update@complex.is' :

  154. If for some reason, the 6th part of the transmission failed, you could
  155. send another message to 'f-prot-update@complex.is' containing the following
  156. in the body:

  158. send-as: uue
  159. send-part: 6

  161. To change the block size to about 20 Kilobytes, you could send a message
  162. to 'f-prot-update@complex.is' containing the following in the body:

  165. send-size: 20

  167. And if the 4th part of that transmission is lost, you could send the
  168. following message to 'f-prot-update@complex.is':

  170. send-as: uue
  171. send-size: 20
  172. send-part: 4

  174. subscribe notice:  Allows people to subscribe to a new version notice.
  175. Subscribers will then receive announcement in e-mail when new versions of
  176. F-PROT are available.
  177.  
  178. unsubscribe notice:  Removes people from the new version notice list.
  179.  
  180. check notice:  Sends back confirmation whether an address is subscribed or
  181. not.
