- ~( B ~) ~L Batch Menu
-
- ~GThis option gives you another menu which allows you to
- manipulate the download batch, for multiple file transfers!
- Detailed help is available from the Batch menu.
-
- ~( C ~) ~L Page SysOp to Chat
-
- ~GThis option will, during reasonable hours, cause
- NanoBBS to play a little tune to get the sysop's
- attention. It is only necessary to page once as a
- flashing yellow "Paged" will appear on the sysop's
- console until you log off. The sysop can set the hours
- during which this option will make noise, so it's
- probably not a good idea to page late at night.
-
- If the Sysop notices that you have paged, and feels like
- chatting, s/he'll activate "chat mode" which will allow
- you to communicate directly with the sysop in real time
- by typing back and forth at one another.
-
- ~( D ~) ~L Download
-
- ~GThis option will cause NanoBBS to send you files. If
- you have already placed files on the download batch,
- these files will be sent to your computer. You will
- also be prompted for additonal files when you select
- Download.
-
- NanoBBS can use any one of seven commonly used file
- transfer protocols to send files to you. If you're a
- beginner, by far the most recommended protocol is
- Zmodem. Select "Z" when the BBS asks you for the
- protocol. Zmodem is automatic, since you don't have to
- type in the file names on your computer as you do with
- other protocols such as Xmodem. Also, Zmodem is much
- more efficient than Xmodem and similar protocols, so you
- can download more in your time allotment with Zmodem
- than with other protocols!
-
- If you don't have Zmodem, downloading is considerably
- more complicated. The first thing you should download
- is another terminal program which includes Zmodem!
-
- Note: The ASCII protocol has absolutely no error
- checking; it merely sends the file out the modem as if
- it were raw text! You have to turn on a capture buffer
- in your terminal program to save files in ASCII
- protocol. This protocol is the most efficient possible
- for text files, but should be avoided if you have a
- noisy connection due to the lack of error recovery!
-
- Traditionally ASCII has never been thought of as a Batch
- protocol, but if you have more than one file to
- download, all the files on the batch will be sent in
- sequence! You need only select the files, turn on your
- capture buffer, and hit = (for non-stop) at the first
- More? [Y/n/=][> prompt!
-
- ~( F ~) ~L Find Files
-
- ~GThis command will let you find out which file area a
- certain file is located in! Just enter a file name or a
- partial filename, or even a wildcarded filename!
- NanoBBS will search through all the file areas and will
- display the exact filenames, along with relevant file
- information, for each file! The files which are
- displayed are organized by file area so you will know
- where to find them in the BBS. You can even get a
- complete list of all the files you have access to by
- trying to "find" *.*
-
- This is a high-speed search utility that gets its speed
- from only searching filenames. To search description
- strings, use the ~(S~)earch command.
-
- ~( G ~) ~L Goodbye
-
- ~GUse this command when you are finished using the BBS
- and want to log off. NanoBBS is robust software; you
- could just hang up and nothing would be damaged, but it
- is considered impolite to log off that way, so please
- use "G"oodbye to log off! This command is available at
- most menu prompts in the system for your convenience.
-
- ~( H ~) ~L Advanced Help
-
- ~GAdvanced Help is what you are reading now.
-
- ~( J ~) ~L "Jump" to another file area
-
- ~GThis option lets you select which file area you are
- using. Most BBSes separate files into "areas" by
- subject matter and type, so if you wish to download
- files of a particular type, use this command to select
- that area.
-
-
- ~( L ~) ~L List Files
-
- ~GThis option will list files in the current file area.
- If there are many files in the area, you can narrow the
- display by specifying a partial filename.
-
- ~( N ~) ~L New Files
-
- ~GThis is an extremely powerful command! It displays
- every new file uploaded or added since your last call,
- in every file area. You can also give NanoBBS a
- specific date other than today to find, for example, all
- the files entered in the last week or month or year!
-
- ~( Q ~) ~L Quit to Main
-
- ~GWhen you are done in the file section, you can return
- to the Main Menu with this command.
-
- ~( S ~) ~L Search Descriptions
-
- ~GThis is similar to the ~(F~)ind command except that it
- also searches through the descriptions for each file for
- a substring match. Because it has to search through
- much more data, this command is far slower than the
- ~(F~)ind command and should only be used if you don't
- know even a part of the filename you're looking for.
-
- ~( U ~) ~L Upload files
-
- ~GThis command lets you send files from your computer to
- the BBS. If your sysop has set a download:upload ratio
- for you, you must upload a certain amount of files in
- order to be able to download. Because uploads
- accumulate and are shared, most sysops set this ratio
- quite loosely, at 10 downloads for every one upload, or
- better! As with Downloading, you can transfer many
- files at once using Zmodem. When you have sent all the
- files, the BBS will prompt you to give a brief (up to
- 240 characters) description for each one. Consult your
- terminal software documentation for instructions on how
- to use your terminal to upload. Most problems users
- have with uploading stem from incomplete understanding
- of their terminal software. Make sure that you select
- the same protocol on the BBS as you do in your terminal,
- and that the files you are going to upload are in the
- directory that your terminal software expects.
-
- All of the same protocols available for downloading are
- available for uploading except for ASCII. Because ASCII
- has no error checking, it is not appropriate for
- automated receiving of files.
-
- ~( Y ~) ~L Your Statistics
-
- ~GThis command displays practically everything the BBS
- knows about you. It will tell you how much you have
- uploaded, downloaded, and posted, how much time you have
- banked and how much netmail credit you have left, how
- many days are left in your subscription, your access
- level, and much more! If you have a question about your
- account, check this command before you ask your sysop.
-
- ~( ? ~) ~L Command Summary
-
- ~GThis command is the quick way to remind yourself of the
- command key for a particular function.
