  1. ÇCHKDSK won't run with Magic Folders installed.  We disable ChkDsk because it 
  2. can delete all your invisible files.  (You can temporarily re-enable it 
  3. from the "Utilities" menu.)  For more information select "Help" at the 
  4. main screen. 
  5.  
  6. ChkDsk is the only program we've tested that causes a problem.  The 
  7. following have been tested and work fine with Magic Folders: SCANDISK, 
  8. DEFRAG, Norton Disk Doctor, and Norton Speed Disk.  
  9.  
  10. Do you use any other disk fix or defragmenting utilities not listed here? 
  11. üYou must test your disk fix and/or defragmenting utilities to see if 
  12. they're safe to use with Magic Folders.  To do so, run them when your 
  13. Magic folders are visible and invisible.  DO NOT FIX ANY REPORTED ERRORS.  
  14. If more errors are reported when your folders are invisible then do one 
  15. of the following: 
  16.  
  17. 1.  Remove the utilities (so you can't use them) or remove Magic Folders.
  18.  
  19. 2.  Use only one account in Magic Folders (just use the Master Account 
  20. already created) and move the offending utility into one of your 
  21. invisible folders.  That way it can only be run when all folders and 
  22. files are visible, and thereby safe.

  27. âTo register via modem from outside the US or Canada please enter those 
  28. numbers that must be dialed to place a direct call to the United States.  
  29. These numbers often include a prefix to place an international call 
  30. followed by the country code for the United States.  If you want to put 
  31. delays in your prefix dialing string, use a comma for every two second 
  32. delay needed.

  34. Note: A successful registration may not be possible if a good modem 
  35. connection cannot be made due to line quality or delays.  In addition, 
  36. international calling rates can be expensive, but in most cases will 
  37. still be less than the $4 mailing surcharge added to overseas orders that 
  38. are registered by other means.

  41. When you registered you received a file called MFD.SYS which tells Magic 
  42. Folders you're a registered user.  MFD.SYS has been customized with your 
  43. personal information (See "Registered to..." in the "Registration" Menu) 
  44. and licensed for your use only.  Giving MFD.SYS to others is illegal.
  45.  
  46. Make a backup copy of MFD.SYS as it is the key to your registration.  
  47. As long as it's in the same directory as MAGIC.EXE Magic Folders will be 
  48. registered.

  50. One registration benefit is free updates for six months, provided you 
  51. download them.  You can get the latest version at our WEB site: 
  52. "www.pc-magic.com"   Just download the latest version and extract it 
  53. into the directory where the current version is located.

  55. Note:  If you charged your registration to your credit card the charge 
  56. will be to RSE Software.  Thank you for your support.
  57. àOne or more of the files needed to restore the last registered version 
  58. are missing.  If you got a disk from us when you registered (modem 
  59. registrants don't unless they request one) then you can re-install that 
  60. version.

  62. A better option is to visit our WEB page at: "pc-magic.com/", go to 
  63. the "Previous versions" page and click on the latest version created 
  64. within six months of your registration.
  65. åYou can have up to 5 Magic Folder accounts.  Each account can create 
  66. their own list of magic folders that are invisible to all other 
  67. accounts.  However, only your "Master" account can un-install Magic 
  68. Folders and create new accounts.

  70. If multiple accounts are created, no account has access to all the hidden 
  71. folders.  Therefore you shouldn't create multiple accounts if you're 
  72. hiding an "un-safe" disk utility.  Having multiple accounts also makes 
  73. backups tougher because no account has complete access to all hidden 
  74. folders.  See "Multiple Accounts" in "Help" for more important 
  75. information.

  102. ëAt this time we will create a "KeyDisk".  This disk will let you get 
  103. into Magic Folders should you forget your password.  It also lets you 
  104. disable Magic Folders from DOS should you not be able to use the 
  105. "Uninstall" feature within Magic Folders.

  107. To create your KeyDisk put a blank, formatted disk in your floppy drive.
  108.  
  109. What drive is your KeyDisk in?
  110. èYour KeyDisk has been created.  Remove your KeyDisk now and write the 
  111. following on its label:

  113. "Magic Folder KeyDisk - See README.TXT if you forget password or need to 
  114. uninstall and can't run Magic Folders."

  121. If you forget your password insert this KeyDisk, run Magic Folders and 
  122.  
  123. attempt to enter your password three times.  After the third attempt 
  124.  
  125. Magic Folders will use this disk as a key to let you in.  This only lets 
  126.  
  127. you into the Master Account.  If you forget the password to another 
  128.  
  129. account you will have to un-install Magic Folders and re-install it again 
  130.  
  131. to gain access to all the hidden folders.

  134. Can't run Magic Folders?
  135.  
  136. If you need to uninstall Magic Folders and you can't use the Un-install 
  137.  
  138. feature inside Magic Folders then boot from a system floppy, or if Win95, 
  139.  
  140. safe boot to "Safe Command Prompt Only".  Then insert this disk into 
  141.  
  142. drive A:.  At the DOS prompt enter "A:", and then enter "DISABLE".
  143.  
  144. îYou can use Magic Folders to restrict access to your computer.  With 
  145. "AutoStart" installed Magic Folders asks you for your password whenever 
  146. your computer boots.  Enter your password and your magic folders will 
  147. automatically become visible.  How Magic Folders handles incorrect 
  148. passwords depends on which of the following two options you choose.  
  149. Select "Cancel" if you don't wish to install "AutoStart". 
  150.  
  151. ìIt appears you have 32 bit File Access for Windows 3.11 activated.  
  152. Magic Folders will not work if 32 bit File Access is on.  You can check 
  153. by going into Control Panel, clicking "Enhanced", then "Virtual Memory" 
  154. and checking the "Disk Status" section. 
  155.

  157. ÄMagic Folders didn't load correctly.  MF.EXE (or whatever you renamed it 
  158. during installation) needs to be run from within your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  
  159. Make sure the "LH pathname\MF.EXE" statement (where "pathname" is the 
  160. directory where MF.EXE is located) is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and that 
  161. it directly proceeds the line that runs Windows.  If it is and things 
  162. still don't work, please send e-mail to support@pc-magic.com and 
  163. reference Err 97. 
  164. ÅCHKDSK has been temporarily enabled.  You can copy, move, delete, or use 
  165. it.  However, keep in mind that using CHKDSK with Magic Folders can 
  166. delete any folders that are hidden at the time you use CHKDSK including 
  167. the folder containing your password information.  See "Help" for details. 
  168.  
  169. CHKDSK access will stay enabled until you re-boot, turn off your 
  170. computer, or run Magic Folders.
  171. ÉMagic Folders has been removed from your hard disk.  You must exit 
  172. Windows and re-boot (in Win95: "Restart the computer") to remove Magic 
  173. Folders from memory.
