- Export Restrictions
-
- Encryption software is classified as munitions by the U.S. Government and
- has restrictions for export. The 40-bit PC1 cipher used in the shareware
- and international versions of Puffer is the strongest encryption technology
- allowed for export. Registered users who reside in the U.S. or Canada can
- use both the 40-bit PC1 cipher and the much stronger 160-bit Blowfish cipher.

- Getting Started
-
- It is highly recommended that you read the user's manual and browse the
- online help system. If you are anxious to use Puffer for encrypting e-mail,
- here is a quick tutorial to get you started:
-
- 1. Start Puffer and click on the Editor tab to switch to Puffer's text editor.
- 2. Type in a message.
- 3. Click the Encrypt tab to switch to Puffer's Encrypt page.
- 4. In the Options group on the right, set the Source to "Editor" and the
- Target to "Clipboard".
- 5. Click the Encrypt button at the bottom of the page.
- 6. Enter a password. Type the same password in the second box for confirmation
- and click OK. The recipient will have to know the password to decrypt the
- message.
- 7. Start up your e-mail software and paste the contents of the clipboard into
- the body of a new message. Normally, this is done from an Edit/Paste menu.
- Pressing Ctrl-V will also paste the clipboard contents at the current cursor
- position in most programs.
- 8. Send the message.
-
- When someone sends you a message encrypted with Puffer, follow these steps
- to read the message:
-
- 1. From your e-mail software, select Edit/Select All from the menu to select
- the message contents. If your e-mail software does not have a Select All
- function, you can manually select text by clicking and dragging your mouse.
- 2. Select Edit/Copy to place a copy of the text on to the clipboard.
- 3. Start up Puffer and click the Decrypt tab to switch to Puffer's Decrypt
- page.
- 4. In the options group on the right, set the Source to "Clipboard" and the
- Target to "Editor".
- 5. Click the Open button at the bottom of the page.
- 6. Click on the file you wish to decrypt. This is usually called
- "message.txt".
- 7. Click the Decrypt button at the bottom of the page.
- 8. Enter the same password that was used to encrypt the message and click the
- OK button. Click the Close button after decrypting.
- 9. Click the Editor tab to switch to the editor and read the message.
