  35.   The Watchman(tm) is a background-working program that 'patrolls'
  36.   the Windows 3.x Program Manager and closes any window he has been 
  37.   told to close. Whenever he founds a window whose main title or code 
  38.   -we will see what that means later- exists in his data file he
  39.   closes it. 
  40.  
  41.   We are talking about closing WINDOWS. What matters here are
  42.   window descriptions, i.e. the exact words that appear in the
  43.   title bar of a given window.

  46.   PURPOSE, UTILITY----------------------------

  49.   Situation 1
  50.  
  51.   Do you have any children? Do they use the computer? They play
  52.   with many games, I bet they do. But how to avoid children from
  53.   clicking -by accident, or not- in your 'Nudity' folder? Or what
  54.   could you do to make sure they do not wipe off your 'c:\windows'
  55.   directory while you leave them alone to answer the door? Now you
  56.   know how to avoid that. Leave 'The Watchman' running and he will
  57.   close any 'forbidden' window. You could leave your children 
  58.   playing with the computer and go to the toilet without fearing
  59.   for your data or for the their mental safety.

  64.   Imagine you want to limit the access to the Internet to somebody.
  65.   Or just limit the access to a given internet address. Just take 
  66.   note of the complete window name, e.g. 'Playboy - Microsoft Internet
  67.   Explorer', and configure The Watchman to ban the access to
  68.   that particular window. However, if you want to completely ban the
  69.   access to Internet you will have to use WINDOW CODES (keep reading).

  115.   HOW IT WORKS

  119.   ABOUT WINDOW NAMES AND WINDOW CODES---------------------

  122.   The phrase 'WINDOW NAME' refers to the exact words -the case doesn't
  123.   matter- you see at the top bar of a window. For example, if you run
  124.   Write you may see the following window name:
  125.  
  126.   'Write - (No title)'
  127.  
  128.   But now open any file. You will see another title or WINDOW NAME:
  129.  
  130.   'Write - HELP.WRI'
  131.  
  132.   As you see WINDOW NAMES change constantly when you open new files, 
  133.   so The Watchman(tm) will not recognise a program whose main window 
  134.   has changed because its WINDOW NAME will not coincide with the name
  135.   you gave in the first place.

  137.   Is there anything more stable than window names? Sure, WINDOW CODES.
  138.   These are labels that identify a program/window no matter what you 
  139.   do. Thus, if you want to be completely sure a program is always
  140.   closed you need to use WINDOW CODES. Here are some examples you

  153.   USING THE WATCHMAN----------------------------

  156.   Once you know which window/program do you want to protect, run
  157.   The Watchman. A small window will appear. Move your mouse pointer
  158.   to the window. Click on the image. You will be asked a password. 
  159. > The default password is 'socrates'.

  162.   The pop-up menu------

  165.   +. 'Change password'
  166.    
  167.       You will be asked a password whenever you try to exit
  168.       the program, or click on the main window to access the pop-up
  169.       menu. You may change the password by choosing this option in
  170.       the pop-up menu.

  173.   +. 'Edit window data file'
  174.  
  175.       When you want to add or change a WINDOW NAME or WINDOW
  176.       CODE you can do so by using this option. However, you may 
  177.       edit the text file 'WDATA.INI' with your favourite text
  178.       editor. It is important that you read and follow the 
  179.       instructions you find in there.

  181. >     Only 5 WINDOW NAMES are allowed in the SHAREWARE version.

  184.   +. 'New high-priority window #1,#2'
  185.  
  186.       Here you can add up to two different WINDOW NAMES or WINDOW
  187.       CODES, but these will have priority over the other ones, 
  188.       that is, The Watchman will close these windows faster.
  189.       Also, by using these options you can change the configuration 
  190.       'on the fly', i.e. without restarting the main program.

  192. >     Only 2 high-priority windows are allowed in the SHAREWARE vs.

  195.   +. 'Setup'
  196.  
  197.       This option runs the setup program, which is very 
  198.       straightforward.
  199.  
  200.       You may access the setup from inside The Watchman(tm)
  201.       or directly from the File Manager, it doesn't matter.
  202.       However, in order to activate any change accesible from the
  203.       setup you have to restart The Watchman.

  205.       The wsetup provides you with 4 options:

  208.       +. 'Write a detailed report'
  209.     
  210.           If activated, The Watchman creates a report/log
  211.           with all the windows he closes and the exact
  212.           time every window was closed.
  213.  
  214.       +. 'Play a disgusting sound'
  215.  
  216.           If activated, The Watchman plays a wav file named
  217.           'smack.wav' every time he closes a window. You can 
  218.           change the default sound into your favourite by 
  219.           renaming it to the default name.

  221.       +. 'Hide The Watchman window'
  222.  
  223.           Use this option to hide the program completely or
  224.           to restore it.

  226.       +. 'Auto-startup mode'
  227.  
  228.           If activated, The Watchman will be run when Windows
  229.           starts.

  232.   +. 'Wcodegrab module'

  234.       By using this module, writing down WINDOW NAMES - OR CODES 
  235.       (only the REGISTERED version) - is much more easy. Once the
  236.       module window appears just click on the window/program you
  237.       want to protect. Its WINDOW NAME will be written in WDATA.INI.
  238.       Remember you can edit this file manually if you want to.
