  62. 1.  About Folder Guard
  63. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  65. Folder Guard is a software-only security solution for personal or
  66. publicly accessible computers running the Windows 95 operating
  67. system.  Its features include:
  68.  
  69. o Complete control over access to folders of your choice.  You can
  70.   hide or make actually "read-only" any folder, so that access to 
  71.   its contents will be restricted to all applications including 
  72.   Explorer, MS Office, MS-DOS programs, common dialogs, etc.
  73.  
  74. o Optional user validation at logon, which helps protect your
  75.   Windows 95 files from intruders.  You can choose to disable the
  76.   Cancel button on the logon prompt or set up a password to logon as
  77.   "default" user. A log file can be set up to help you keep track
  78.   of the use of your computer.
  79.  
  80. o Password access to protected folders that can be set up, or
  81.   changed, at any time.
  82.  
  83. o Flexible control of user access to many Windows 95 resources, such
  84.   as the Start Menu, Control Panel, etc.

  86. o User-specific access rights to folders and to other Windows 95
  87.   resources that you can configure separately for each user of your
  88.   computer.

  90. o Easy and intuitive user interface that helps you set up the
  91.   attributes of folders you want to protect, and helps you control
  92.   other settings, as well.

  95.   While protecting specified folders and other resources, Folder
  96.   Guard uses only about 30K of RAM.

  101. You will find Folder Guard indispensable if you share your computer
  102. with others and you don't want any changes made to your files.  Or,
  103. if you allow your kids to play games on your system from time to
  104. time, and want to be sure that everything will be OK when they
  105. finish.  Or, if you don't want your parents to see some of your
  106. files.  Or, if you are a network administrator and your users give
  107. you a headache messing the files up all the time.  However you use
  108. Windows 95, you may have concerns about the security, privacy, or
  109. confidentiality of your files.  And now you have a single, effective
  110. solution -- Folder Guard.

  112.    WARNING: Folder Guard is a powerful tool, which should be used
  113.             with care.  Using it thoughtlessly, you can
  114.             inadvertently make your computer inaccessible.  Please
  115.             take time reading Folder Guard Help before enabling
  116.             the protection of folders!

  119. painlessly install and uninstall Folder Guard.  Extensive context-

  125. 2. System requirements
  126. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  128. Folder Guard is designed for the operating system Windows 95.  It
  129. will NOT install or work under Windows NT (you can use instead the
  130. built-in security features of Windows NT to controll access to the
  131. folders).  At least 1 MB (one megabyte) of free space on your hard
  132. disk is required to install Folder Guard.  
  133.

  136. 2. Installing and uninstalling Folder Guard
  137. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  139. Folder Guard comes with a convenient and flexible Setup utility,
  140. which allows you to both install and uninstall Folder Guard.
  141.  
  142. To install Folder Guard:
  143. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  144.  
  145. a) If you have obtained Folder Guard as a compressed file,
  146.    uncompress the file into a temporary folder on a hard disk, or on
  147.    a floppy diskette.
  148.    
  149. b) Open folder containing the uncompressed set of Folder Guard files
  150.    and double-click 'Setup' (or 'Setup.exe').
  151.  
  152.    NOTE: If you have a previous version of Folder Guard already
  153.    installed on your computer and have set up the administrator's
  154.    password, you will be prompted for this password to continue the
  155.    installation.  Setup may also prompt you to restart Windows before 
  156.    the installation can be continued.
  157.    
  158. c) The Setup utility will suggest you the folder in which to install
  159.    Folder Guard.  You may accept the suggestion or choose other
  160.    location for Folder Guard files.  You can also specify whether to
  161.    add Folder Guard items to Start Menu and whether to create a
  162.    Desktop folder for Folder Guard components.
  163.  
  164. d) Setup utility will copy the files into the specified folder.
  165.  
  166.    NOTE: Except for the files copied into the destination folder and,
  167.    optionally, for the shortcuts added to the Start Menu and/or to the
  168.    Desktop folder (as described above), Setup does not install or 
  169.    modify any other files on your computer.
  170.    
  171. e) At the end of the installation procedure Setup will prompt you to
  172.    enter your name and a Registration Code.  If you have purchased a
  173.    license for continued use of Folder Guard and received your
  174.    Registration Code, you may enter it at that time, and the
  175.    evaluation version of Folder Guard will be converted into the
  176.    registered one.  Otherwise, you may skip entering the
  177.    registration code and Folder Guard will operate in the evaluation
  178.    mode.

  180.    NOTE: when entering the registration information, please make sure you
  181.    enter your name in exactly the same way as it is spelled on your
  182.    Registration Acknowledgment, otherwise the registration code will
  183.    not be accepted. If your name is not shown on the Registration 
  184.    Acknowledgment, you should spell your name in the same way as you
  185.    have spelled it when placing the order (that is, if you have ordered
  186.    with a credit card, enter your name as it appears on the card, etc.)
  187.  
  188. f) After the installation has been complete, you may delete files
  189.    from the temporary folder, from which you were installing Folder
  190.    Guard.
  191.  
  192.    NOTE: At this point Folder Guard, although installed, in no way
  193.    affects the operation of your computer.  That is, all folders can
  194.    be freely accessed, as before, and no other restrictions are
  195.    imposed on the use of the computer.  To enable the protection of
  196.    folders you must run Folder Guard (FGuard.exe) and use its commands
  197.    to specify how exactly you want your computer to be protected.
  198.  
  199.    NOTE: We strongly advise you to backup the Windows Registry before 
  200.    you use Folder Guard for the first time. To backup the Registry, you
  201.    may wish to make use of the REGISTRY.BAT utility, included in this
  202.    package. Please refer to Folder Guard Help for more information on 
  203.    the Registry and using the REGISTRY.BAT utility.
  204.  
  205. If anything goes wrong...
  206. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  207.  
  208.    If you have set up Folder Guard so that the folder protection is
  209.    enabled at Windows startup, and Windows 95 fails to boot properly, 
  210.    this means that Folder Guard is incompatible with some hardware or
  211.    software already installed on your computer.
  212.  
  213.    In such a case, try to boot Windows 95 in the "safe" mode (by pressing
  214.    F8 while the "Starting Windows 95..." text is shown on the screen and
  215.    choosing "safe mode" from the menu).  After Windows 95 loads in the
  216.    "safe" mode, run Folder Guard and turn OFF the "Enable at Windows 
  217.    startup: Folder Protection" option. This should make Windows bootable 
  218.    again.
  219.  
  220.    Alternatively, boot Windows in the "command prompt only" mode or from
  221.    a bootable floppy disk.  When the command prompt appears, change
  222.    directory to the folder in which you have installed Folder Guard and
  223.    rename FGuard.VxD to some other name, for example, FG.VxD.  Then try
  224.    to boot Windows as usually, ignoring the message about a missing
  225.    FGUARD.VXD driver.
  226.  
  227.    After Windows 95 is ready to use, you may wish to uninstall Folder
  228.    Guard.
  229.  
  230. To uninstall Folder Guard:
  231. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  232.  
  233. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply delete files from the Folder
  234.    Guard folder to completely uninstall it.  Please follow the
  235.    procedure described below to uninstall Folder Guard and clean up
  236.    your system configuration:
  237.  
  238. a) Open folder 'Control Panel' and double-click on 'Add/remove
  239.    programs'.
  240.    
  241. b) Find the line "Chaosoft Folder Guard" in the list of products
  242.    which can be uninstalled and double-click it.
  243.  
  244.    NOTE: If you have set up the administrator's password, you will
  245.    be prompted for this password to continue. installation.  You 
  246.    may also be prompted to restart Windows before the uninstallation
  247.    can be continued.
  248.  
  249. c) The "Uninstalling Folder Guard" dialog box will appear prompting
  250.    you to confirm that you want to uninstall Folder Guard.  You may
  251.    choose to deactivate Folder Guard, delete its application files,
  252.    delete user files related to Folder Guard, and/or reset Folder
  253.    Guard settings. Press the Help button in this dialog box for more
  254.    information on the options offered.
  255.    
  256. d) After the uninstalling procedure has been finished, you may need
  257.    to go to the folder where Folder Guard files were installed and
  258.    delete remaining files.

  262. 4. This is TRY BEFORE YOU BUY software

  265. This is NOT freeware or public domain software.  This is software
  266. which you can "try before you buy".
  267.  
  268. You may install the program in your system and use it for an
  269. evaluation period of up to 14 days.  After that time, you are
  270. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software or
  271. else stop using it.  You may freely copy and distribute evaluation
  272. copies of Folder Guard provided that all conditions specified in the
  273. distribution license are satisfied (please see the license agreement
  274. in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)

  276. What's the difference between the Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  277.  
  278. There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
  279. licensed versions of this software: all features of the licensed
  280. version are available and can be used in the evaluation version.
  281. Actually, it's the same program: you may convert an evaluation copy
  282. to a registered copy by entering your name and a Registration Code.
  283. Similarly, a registered copy of the program may be 'unregistered' by
  284. deleting the registration code or by just copying the program to
  285. another machine.
  286.  
  287. The only difference between the licensed and evaluation versions is
  288. the prompt to disable Folder Guard, displayed by the evaluation
  289. version from time to time:

  299. While you are evaluating Folder Guard, you may reply "No" to this
  300. prompt and Folder Guard will continue its normal operation,
  301. restricting access to the folders you have chosen to protect.  If
  302. someone else is using the computer, though, that user may reply
  303. "Yes" to this prompt and thus restore access to the protected
  304. folders.
  305.  
  306. To prevent this prompt from being displayed, you must register
  307. Folder Guard -- either by supplying a valid Registration Code at the
  308. end of the installation procedure, or by entering the Registration
  309. Code with the "Help | About" command of Folder Guard.
  310.  
  311. To obtain a Registration Code, you must purchase a license for
  312. continued use of Folder Guard.  Please refer to ORDER.TXT file for
  313. detailed instructions and order forms.  You may order Folder Guard
  314. with a check or money order.  Major credit cards accepted.  You may
  315. also register via CompuServe.  Purchase orders from companies
  316. accepted.
