The Falaise Gap -- August 1944. After two months of bitter countryside fighting, the Allied armies
finally broke out of the Normandy beachhead at the end of July 1944, with the American divisions
acting as the door and the Commonwealth armies acting as the hinge. A German attempt to contain
the breakout on 7 August stalled in the face of stubborn ground resistance and Allied tactical
airpower. The Allied armies attempted to encircle the remnants of the German Seventh Army between
the town of Falaise and Argentan. In this fictional scenario, forward recon elements of the US Third
Armored Division (with excellent tactical air support) are racing to close the southern portion of the
Falaise Gap and prevent the demoralized German forces from escaping. The victory objectives
represent a vital tactical chokepoint that must be taken and held at all costs. By James Kiras
