The Battle of Champs*
*
25 December 1944*
*
This scenario is based on the Germans last desperate attempt
to take Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. The TO&E is approximate. What I have
tried to recreate is the overall situation facing the combatants that day.*
*
The attack was originally supposed to be by the entire 15th Panzergrenadier Division
supported by the 26 Volkstrum Division. However only two battalions of the 15th PG and
18 tanks were actually available that day. They were suported by two battalions of
SP Artillery and a few infantry from the 26th VK, who contributed very little that day.*
*
After clearing Champs they were supposed to drive on Hemroulle and then on to Bastogne.
The attack however was hastily launched and uncoordinated. Luckily for the Americans,
who were spread extremely thin, the Germans also failed to do a proper reconnaissance
before hand. The German Col. in charge of the attack was told it wasnt needed as the
Americans would be too suprised by a Christmas Day attack.*
*
As a result heavy fighting developed in and around Champs between the 1st Battalion,
77th Grenadier Regiment and A Company of the 502 Parachute Regiment. The 2nd Battalion of the
77th Grenadiers was soon brought up from reserve and B Company of the 502 was brought up to
help the Americans. After fierce house to house fighting that lasted most of the morning
the Germans fail to dislodge the Paratroopers.*
*
Meanwhile the 18 panzers attack without support from the east towards Hemroulle.
They blow past A Company of the 327 Glider Infantry and their supporting TDs but are stopped by
reserves in Hemroulle and C Company of the 502 plus the Regimental HQ from Rolle Chateau.*
*
The Germans come within about a mile of there objective but are eventually stopped and forced
to withdraw. If the attack had been a little better prepared and coordinated however the outcome
could have been much different.*
*
The scenario is designed to be played as the German but can be played from either side.*
*
If anyone is interested in playing the scenario or has comments you can contact me (Bill Jenkins) at,
