MISSION OF THE WEEK!
It is our goal to support JetFighter III and keep the flying fun by
offering a 'mission of the week'. These missions are put together by our
staff here at Mission Studios. They don't fit together to form a
'campaign', but they should serve as fun stand-alone missions. And please
excuse us if we miss a week!
DECAL OF THE WEEK!
We will be posting a 'decal of the week' which you can apply to your
aircraft from the hangar deck. The decal of the week will be chosen from
decals submitted by users, and from decals created by our artists here at
Mission Studios. To submit a decal for consideration, check our website
(www.missionstudios.com) for detailed instructions.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
001
Q. I have a problem. What should I do?
A. First, download the latest update and see if that solves your problem.
Second, read the README.TXT file on the CD-ROM!!!!!!!! It contains a LOT of
valuable information that will help you out. Next, read this FAQ, it
contains the latest information, and some repeats of what you will find in
the README.TXT file.
002
Q. I try to change resolution modes but the sim gets all garbled up and
locks up on me. What's going on?
A. Not all video cards support 640x350 mode the same way. You may be able
to get 640x350 mode to work properly by using a different VESA driver. We
are working on a way to get 640x350 mode working properly on more machines,
and will post an update when it is finished. If you think you are having
problems getting 640x400 or 640x480 mode to run, then you definitely must
get a new VESA driver. Contact the manufacturer of your video card, or use
the shareware SciTech Display Doctor found in the /DRIVERS directory of the
JetFighter III CD-ROM. Also make sure that you have the minimum requirement
of 16 Megs of RAM to run JF3 in high-res.
003
Q. I run the program and the sound works fine while on the carrier, but I
do not get sound when I run the simulator. How can I fix this?
A. Download the update. Also you may have the wrong IRQ or DMA channel set
for your sound card. It is possible that even with the wrong settings, you
may still hear sound while aboard the carrier. However, once you are in the
aircraft, you will either hear nothing, or the program may crash. Verify
your sound board settings and run the game again. You can change the
settings by typing INSTALL [Enter] in the JetFighter directory that you
installed to (NOT the CD-ROM)! Remember that on some systems, the IRQ & DMA
settings may be different for your soundcard in Win95 and DOS. Please
verify what your sound board settings are in DOS.
004
Q. I can't get all the buttons on my joystick to work why not?
A. Rerun the installation by typing INSTALL under the /jf3 directory on
your hard drive. This time select Generic 4-button Joystick and it should
work fine.
005
Q. The 'hat' on my joystick doesn't do anything.
A. JetFighter III has a very convenient joystick setup program which lets
you select the type of joystick you are using. Each joystick has a
'program' associated with it that controls what functions the different
switches will activate. There are some joysticks, however, that use
'analog' hats. These joysticks require special calibration, and prevent the
simultaneous use of throttle and rudder controls, so we decided to support
only the 'digital' switches on your joystick.
006
Q. Can I customize or remap the joystick buttons?
A. Yes, this feature has been added to the update. Simply download the
update and apply as described above.
007
Q. Does JF3 support 3D accelerator cards?
A. While we don't currently support the new crop of 3D accelerators, we are
working hard on adding this support right now! You should expect a
significant increase in frame-rate as well as vastly improved color
fidelity. Because JetFighter III uses a very sophisticated rendering
system, we will be focusing our energies on supporting the 'high-end' 3D
cards first. Please check missionstudios.com periodically for updates.
008
Q. I just got JF3 and can't find any selection for general MIDI in the
sound setup. Specifically the Roland SCC-1. Does JF3 support this board?
A. Try using the setting for Ensoniq SoundScape. That is a general MIDI
device. We will post an update to the install program which will include
selections for more sounds cards, including general MIDI devices.
009
Q. When will the patch for Windows95 sound support be available?
A. This is currently supported in the update. Simply download the update
and apply.
010
Q. When will there be a mission editor available?
A. We can't give you an exact date, because this is actually a very
sophisticated tool to put together. Our hope is to release a mission disk
along with a mission editor sometime in mid 1997.
011
Q. I am having problems calibrating the throttle.
012
Q. My joystick will not calibrate properly, when I center it the dot keeps
moving around. What's going on?
A. The update will fix this. Simply download the update and apply.
013
Q. Why do I have to recalibrate every time I play the game?
A. Download the update. If it is still giving you trouble, try increasing
the 'dead zone' of the joystick from 9 to 12 or 15. This can be found in
the Inflight Menu - Controls - Calibrate.
014
Q. Where are the Thrustmaster joystick custom files?
A. We have posted a set of Thrustmaster calibration files on the donwload
sites. Thanks to Bill "DJ" DiGiacomo and Scott Wolf for building these
files!
015
Q. JetFighter III re-boots my computer when I exit the program, or when I
am about to run a mission.
Q. I seem to be having problems getting my Ensoniq SoundScape card to work.
A. Download the update. Make sure you are using SSINIT in your sound card
initialization line in your config.sys or autoexec.bat. If you changed this
previously to SSNOEMS then you'll have to change it back to SSINIT.
016
Q. What 3D cards are you going to be supporting? When will this be ready?
A. We are currently working on support for several of the 'higher end' 3D
accelerator cards and MMX. We can say for sure that we will be working on
the 3DFx and Rendition based boards, and probably others as well. We will
try to let users know how this is progressing. JetFighter III is
particularly well suited to run on advanced 3D cards because it uses very
high-end rendering techniques like texture, intensity, haze, transparency,
and z-buffering. Expect improved frame rates and DRAMATICALLY improved
color fidelity!
017
Q. How do I eliminate the scenery load delays?
018
Q. I tried to copy the scenery areas that you mentioned in the readme, but
they don't exist on the CD-ROM!
A. PLEASE check the readme file for detailed information on this. It will
tell you how to use SMARTDRV.EXE to speed up your disk access, and how to
pre-load scenery to your hard disk. BUT BEWARE: there is a typo in early
versions of the readme file. For CUBA it may recommend that you pre-load
W085S20 (Havana) and W080S20 (Santa Clara). That should read W085N20 and
W080N20 (note the N instead of the S) as CUBA is in the Northern
Hemisphere.
020
Q. I have a Soundblaster AWE32 and have the correct IRQ & DMA settings in
DOS yet my soundcard will still not work?
A. Download the update. Also, with this advanced card (and possibly others)
you need to "wake up" the card for use in DOS. Run the DIAGNOSE utility
that came with your AWE32 to enable the soundcard in DOS. If you do not
have this utility, please contact Creative Labs for technical support.
021
Q. When I try and calibrate my joystick I get a red message stating
"invalid center or incompatible joystick?"
A. Check and make sure your joystick is plugged into the proper sound board
or game card port at the back of your computer. You may also have to "wake
up" your advanced sound card in DOS. Please see Question #020.
022
Q. I am having problems calibrating the rudder.
023
Q. Only 2 of the buttons work on my joystick (Microsoft Sidewinder Pro,
Gravis, etc.)?
A. This problem is corrected in the update. Simply download the update and
apply.
024
Q. As of this FAQ date, what other patches/files are available on the
Mission Studios website?
A. All prior and current fixes have been included in the most recent
update. Check our website periodically for updates and announcements.
025
Q. My video graphics card (Cirrus Logic, etc.) doesn't seem to work with
JetFighter III. I can only run the simulator in low-res.
A. You need to get the latest VESA driver. The best place to get this would
be from your video board's manufacturer. They probably have a website where
you can download this file. Otherwise try the shareware VESA driver,
Scitech Display Doctor, located in the /DRIVERS directory on the JetFighter
III CD. Be sure to try all high-res modes! Due to your specific video
board's capabilities, one or two high-res modes may not be available.
026
Q. My Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro will not work correctly - the throttle
and rudder do not work.
A. This problem is corrected in the update. Simply download the update and
apply.
027
Q. How do I find the settings (IRQ-Interrupt Request, DMA-Direct Memory
Access, PORT) for my sound board?
A. There are two ways. The easiest way to check the settings of your sound
board is to go into Windows95. Click on: Start - Settings - Control Panel -
System - Device Manager - (double-click) Sound, Video, Game Controllers -
(double-click) soundcard (usually listed first) - Resources. REMEMBER on
some machines the settings are different for DOS. Another way is to check
your autoexec.bat or config.sys files. Look for a line that reads "BLASTER=
Axxx Ixx Dx". The number after the A refers to PORT, I refers to IRQ, and D
is the DMA.
028
Q. How do I find out what version of JetFighter III I'm running?
A. In the simulator, access the inflight menu by pressing [Esc], then
select Help, and then About JetFighter III.
029
Q. How do I operate the Flaps?
[Ctrl][f]
030
Q. Why does the game lock-up as soon as I start a mission?
A. The problem maybe that you do not have enough free (RAM memory. Go to a
Dos prompt, type MEM then check the figures next to extented memory. You
need at least 6.5 MB free to fly in low res and 13 MB free for high -res.
You might want to disable any TSR's such as Smartdrive. You can also make a
boot disk by using our boot disk maker. This program will automatically
create a boot disk using your system files. It assumes that you have all
DOS drivers required to run programs in DOS. It is compatible with all our
games, creating expanded memory only if necessary. Click here to download.
bootdisk.zip(30 k)
031
Q. What can I do about screen lockups under Windows 95 using the Diamond
Virge 2000 3D video card?
A. Right Click on "MY COMPUTER", Select Properties-> Performance ->
Graphics. Under Acceleration move the slider one notch to the left so that
it is no longer on the "FULL" setting.
032
Q. What about Multiplayer JetFighter?
A. Multiplayer JetFighter will be worked on after we complete MMX and 3D
card support. We cannot say when or in which product this will appear.
033
Q. I'm still getting causeway errors after correctly applying the patch and
I'm positive that my sound card is installed and working correctly?
A. Try checking your autoexec.bat and config.sys files in Dos and add a
remark or "REM " in front of any line that contains "EMM386".
034
Q. In Free-Flight Setup, I cannot setup for a carrier landing or take-off.
A. This was something we tried to work around in the Front-end but could
not due to the positioning of the carrier in the "real world". Instead,
after you enter the sim in an Instant Mission, press [Esc] to access the
InFlight Menu, then select Game->FreeFlight Setup -> Land At.
035
Q. I'm not sure I applied the patch correctly?
A. Look in the \jf3\resouce directory on the hard drive It should contain
the file FEDATA.DAT if the update was applied correctly. Also the landing
board will work properly if the patch was applied correctly.
