  20. Matrox PowerDesk software includes a display driver and display 
  21. utilities. With this software, you can take full advantage of your 
  22. Matrox graphics hardware and you can access additional Matrox 
  23. display-related features.

  29. To install Matrox PowerDesk, start the "setup" program included 
  30. with it, then follow the on-screen instructions.

  32. The setup program will only install software if a Matrox graphics 
  33. card model supported by the setup program is installed in your 
  34. computer.

  45. Notes, problems, and limitations
  46. ================================
  47.  
  48. - DirectDraw, Direct3D and DirectVideo support
  49.  
  50.   The DirectDraw driver we provide is compatible with DirectX 2 
  51.   (or later) and includes Direct3D support. For our 
  52.   DirectDraw/Direct3D driver to be called, and benefit from 
  53.   hardware acceleration, Microsoft DirectX 2 (or later) MUST be 
  54.   installed, even for programs originally made for DirectX 1.
  55.  
  56.   Also, if a recent version of DirectX isn't installed, some Matrox 
  57.   PowerDesk features may not be available.
  58.  
  59.   We provide DirectX on the Matrox CD-ROM. The latest DirectX is 
  60.   available from the Microsoft Web site, and is included with many 
  61.   DirectX programs.
  62.  
  63.   IMPORTANT: If the DirectX setup program prompts you to replace 
  64.   the existing display drivers, click "No". Otherwise, the setup 
  65.   program installs display drivers which are not as optimized as 
  66.   the Matrox drivers and which do not support PowerDesk software.
  67.  
  68.   Note that depending on the origin of your Microsoft DirectX 
  69.   software, it may not include DirectVideo support. For faster 
  70.   playback of Indeo and Cinepak AVI files, you should install 
  71.   Microsoft DirectVideo support.
  72.  
  73. - Matrox bus mastering
  74.  
  75.   This driver supports bus mastering. Bus mastering is a feature 
  76.   that allows expansion cards to perform tasks at the same time as 
  77.   your computer's CPU. If you have a fast Pentium computer (faster 
  78.   than 166 MHz), the display performance of most programs is 
  79.   improved when bus mastering is used.
  80.  
  81.   To use bus mastering with 3D (Direct3D/OpenGL) programs, your 
  82.   graphics card needs an interrupt request (IRQ). Most computers 
  83.   automatically assign an IRQ to graphics cards, but some do not. 
  84.   If your graphics card hasn't been assigned an IRQ, programs that 
  85.   use Matrox bus mastering may not work properly. For more 
  86.   information, see your Matrox or system manual.

  88. - DirectDraw and Automatic Power Management
  89.  
  90.   As stated in "Microsoft DirectX Release Notes", September 30, 
  91.   1995, a DirectDraw game may be unable to restore properly if it 
  92.   is suspended by Automatic Power Management utilities.
  93.  
  94. - Installation in different language versions of Windows
  95.  
  96.   If you install software in a language different from the language 
  97.   of your operating system (for example, English software on a 
  98.   Japanese system), you may have problems with text and dialog box 
  99.   controls being cut off. This is because of differences in system 
  100.   fonts.
  101.  
  102. - OpenGL support
  103.  
  104.   Note the following limitations related to the OpenGL driver 
  105.   included with Matrox PowerDesk:
  106.  
  107.     - If you have a newer Matrox product or your Matrox software 
  108.       was provided by the manufacturer of your computer, full 
  109.       OpenGL support may be disabled with your Matrox display 
  110.       driver. For a Matrox display driver with full OpenGL support 
  111.       enabled, see the Matrox Web site (www.matrox.com/mga). (If 
  112.       your Matrox product was provided by the manufacturer of your 
  113.       computer, check the Web site of that manufacturer for a 
  114.       display driver. A display driver provided by the manufacturer 
  115.       of your computer is more likely to be tested with your 
  116.       computer model.)

  118.     - Using 3D Studio MAX 2.0, you may experience problems with the 
  119.       viewports being improperly redrawn. If this happens, simply 
  120.       click in a viewport to properly update their display. This 
  121.       problem isn't present with version 2.5 (or later) of 3D 
  122.       Studio MAX.
