  7. Welcome to the Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version! This document 
  8. contains information to help you install and run the Microsoft Return of 
  9. Arcade Trial Version on your computer.

  11. The Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version contains the first two levels 
  12. of Pac-Man. To play the full version of Pac-Man, as well as Dig Dug, 
  13. Pole Position, and Galaxian, see your local retailer for Microsoft Return 
  14. of Arcade.

  17. BEFORE SETUP: Hard Disk Space
  18. ------------------------------
  19. The Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version requires at least 5 megabytes 
  20. of free hard disk space for installation.

  22. Please do not install the retail version of Microsoft Return of Arcade and
  23. the Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version to the same directory.

  26. BEGINNING TO PLAY: Just Point and Click

  28. To run the Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version:

  30. 1. Click the Start button, and then point to Programs.
  31. 2. Point to Microsoft Games, then point to Return of Arcade Trial.
  32. 3. Click the Pac-Man Trial icon and begin to play.

  35. LEARNING TO PLAY: Quick Help and Full Help

  37. The first time you open the Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version, a 
  38. Quick Help screen is displayed to provide basic instructions on how to 
  39. play the game.

  41. For a more complete guide to the game, including strategies, hints, and 
  42. detailed scoring information, click Contents on the Help menu or press 
  43. F1. For stories about the creation of the game, click History of the 
  44. Game on the Help menu.

  47. CUSTOMIZING THE GAME: Create Your Personalized Version
  48. ------------------------------------------------------
  49. The Options menu offers a Player Controls command that allows you to 
  50. choose between playing the game with keyboard controls or with a 
  51. joystick. You can also customize the keys you use to control the game.
  52.  
  53. The Customize Game command lets you customize the playing speed and 
  54. other game variables to create your own personalized version of the 
  55. game.

  60. The Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version captures Pac-Man's 
  61. original sounds, enhancing your playing experience.

  63. The Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version uses DirectSound, 
  64. which supports the following sound cards:
  65. - Sound Blaster:  8-bit cards, 16-bit cards, and the AWE32.
  66. - ESS: 488, 688, 1488, 1688.
  67. - MediaVision: PAS 16, PAS Studio, PAS Plus, Pro 3D, and Blue 
  68.   Lite Special.
  69. - Aztech: Nova 16, Washington 16, Rocky 2.
  70. - Microsoft: Windows Sound System.

  72. If your sound card is not listed above, you might experience sound 
  73. delays while playing the game. 
  74.  
  75. The Adlib Gold 1000 sound card is not supported. While sound will work, 
  76. performance may be poor.

  78. Faults have also been encountered in certain situations on the Roland 
  79. Rap 10 and the Gravis UltraSound MAX sound cards.

  81. To turn the sound on or off, click Sound on the Options menu. When 
  82. the game sounds are turned on, a check mark is displayed next to the 
  83. command name.

  88. The Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version requires a Super VGA 
  89. video card set to at least 256 Color.

  92. GAME PERFORMANCE: How to Get the Fastest Screen Action
  93. ------------------------------------------------------
  94. Here are some tips for maximizing the speed of the game action:
  95.  
  96. Decreasing the size of the game window increases the speed of game 
  97. changes seen on the screen. The larger the window, the more your 
  98. computer must work to update the game screen. The game window is 
  99. resized by clicking the mouse on the lower right corner, and holding 
  100. the mouse button down while moving the pointer toward the upper left 
  101. of the screen. Please note that the game must be paused before the 
  102. window can be resized. 
  103.  
  104. Decreasing the number of colors used for your video display can 
  105. increase performance. You must use a setting of at least 256 Color 
  106. (8 bit). Depending upon your computer, this minimal setting may offer 
  107. higher performance than settings of High Color (16 bit) or True Color 
  108. (24 bit). To select a color setting, click the Start button, then 
  109. point to Settings. Point to Control Panel, then click the Display 
  110. icon. Click the Settings tab in the Display Properties dialog box, 
  111. and choose a new color palette setting.

  113. Turning off sound, which is done from the game's Options menu, can also
  114. increase screen performance. 
  115.  
  116. If you are using the Aztech Sound Galaxy Washington PCI sound card 
  117. and are experiencing performance problems, try disabling your joystick 
  118. control.

  122. SOME GENERAL NOTES
  123. ---------------------------------
  124. The Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version was designed for 
  125. Windows 95 (and later) operating systems. Setup will not install onto 
  126. Windows NT, Windows for Workgroups 3.1 and 3.11, or Windows 3.1 and 3.11.

  128. If you do not have a sound card or if your sound card is not working, 
  129. your joystick will not operate. 
  130.  
  131. When the Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version is running, sounds 
  132. from other applications will not be played. For example, if you have 
  133. an e-mail program that chimes upon receipt of a new message, the chime 
  134. will not be heard, even if your game is paused and minimized. 
  135.  
  136. Screen savers will not activate while the Microsoft Return of Arcade 
  137. Trial Version is running, even if your game is paused or minimized.
  138.  
  139. Do not attempt to run the retail version of Microsoft Return of Arcade and
  140. the Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version at the same time.
  141.  
  142. Our faithful reproduction of classic games is so complete that we 
  143. purposely included the idiosyncrasies of the originals. For example, 
  144. the Customize Game dialog box in Pac-Man allows you to set the number 
  145. of lives a player is given for three or five, but there is no setting 
  146. for four lives. This is because such a setting wasn't allowed by the 
  147. DIP switches on the original arcade game. Likewise, eating a flashing 
  148. ghost at just the right moment as it exits the starting cage causes 
  149. the eyes to float around the maze, rather than return to the cage.

  152. THE BOSS KEY LIVES!

  154. As with Microsoft Arcade, Microsoft Return of Arcade and the
  155. Microsoft Return of Arcade Trial Version have the same great "boss key" 
  156. that makes the game disappear should the need arise to look busy. Just 
  157. press the Escape key and your game will immediately pause and minimize 
  158. -- becoming a mere taskbar button along the bottom of your work-filled 
  159. desktop. A click of the game's taskbar button returns you to exactly 
  160. where you left off.
