PlayBack (C) Iota Software 1995
===============================
PlayBack is a Windows screen saver which uses film files
saved from Iota Software's program "The Complete Animator".
In case you don't yet have The Complete Animator, we've
included a couple of example films for you to try.
Installing PlayBack on Windows 3.1 or 3.11
----- or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 -----
--------------------------------
You need to copy PLAYBK16.SCR into your Windows directory
(usually C:\WINDOWS). You also need to copy the example films,
TIMER.TCA, HUM1.TCA, and T-POT.TCA, to somewhere handy - unless
you already have The Complete Animator installed, the Windows
directory is probably as good a place as any.
Once you've copied the files, start Control Panel and double-
click Desktop. Halfway down the resulting dialogue box is a
drop-down control labelled Screen Saver Name. Choose 'PlayBack16'
from this list.
You then need to click on the Setup button to display
PlayBack's configuration window. Click on 'Change...' in the
'Animation' section, and tell it where you put TIMER.TCA.
That should set things up properly, so you can click OK to
close the configuration window, and then click Test. You should
then see - er, well, let's keep it a secret.
Note that unfortunately you can't use the 32-bit version of
PlayBack on Windows 3.1 or 3.11 even if you've got Win32s
installed.
Installing PlayBack on Windows 95
---------------------------------
You need to copy PLAYBK32.SCR into the System subdirectory
of your Windows 95 directory (e.g. C:\Win95\System). Also stick
Timer.tca, T-pot.tca and Hum1.tca on your hard disk somewhere.
Once you've copied the files, open Control Panel and choose
Display (or right-click on the background window and choose
Properties). Either way, choose the Screen Saver tab of this
dialogue box, find PlayBk32 in the list, and then set the program
up and test it as described above.
Installing Mellow Out on Windows NT (3.5 or later for x86)
----------------------------------------------------------
You need to copy PlayBk32.SCR into the System32 subdirectory
of your Windows NT directory (e.g. C:\Winnt35\System32). Also
stick Timer.tca, T-pot.tca and Hum1.tca on your hard disk
somewhere.
Once you've copied the files you can follow the instructions
above for a Windows 3.1 installation, choosing PlayBack32 from the
list of screen savers.
The configuration options
-------------------------
Animation - This is the filename of the animation file to use.
You can use any 2-colour, 16-colour, or 256-colour
film created with The Complete Animator (either
the RISC OS version or the PC version!)
Motion - Choose 'Bouncing' to have the animation bounce
around the screen in straight lines, or 'Wandering'
to have it meandering in an aimless and random
fashion (rather like these instructions).
Fast - Choose this to have the animation played back at
the fastest rate it can go. This isn't much use if
the reason you're leaving the computer alone is so
that it can carry out a long, intensive computation
for you!
Auto Reverse - Choose this to have the animation drawn the
other way round when it's travelling from right to
left. This is very useful with the HUM1.TCA film
but not so useful with the TIMER.TCA film.
Network (32-bit version only) - This only works if you've got a
Windows Sockets implementation installed. It allows
you to type the IP address (eg. 192.0.1.4) or host
name (eg. shanghai.iota.co.uk) of the machines on
either side of yours.
When you've set this up (on both machines),
then when both are running the screen-saver, the
animation will cross from screen to screen when it
hits the edges. Cool or what?

Copying things
--------------
PlayBack remains (C) Iota Software, but, unlike The Complete
Animator itself, you're free to copy it, and these three films, as
much as you like - in fact, we'd rather like it to get spread as
widely as possible!
The HUM1.TCA and T-POT.TCA example films were done by Don
Slaven, who has kindly said we can give them away with this software.
If you're copying it, please copy all six files in this
directory together, without altering any of them. Of course, you're
free to distribute films you've made yourself as well!
No, you don't get the source code to PlayBack, but at some
point in the future we hope to release a freely-distributable DLL
and so on that'll let you use animations in your own software.
