  63. Everyone knows about the brilliant Ruftrade German to English
  64. translating program; it's a valuable tool in the Atari world, where a
  65. high percentage of documentation is written in German. However, there
  66. is just one problem, it is now no longer in development.
  67.  
  68. The biggest flaw with the original Ruftrade program was the user
  69. interface, which has been described as "a necessery evil"! With this
  70. in mind, and the fact the dictionary was not updateable, Joe Connor
  71. tempted (!) me with the idea of rewriting the program with a GEM
  72. interface and loadable dictionary.
  73.  
  74. As someone always willing to under take a challenge (ha,ha) ;-) I said
  75. I'd have ago. Here is the result.....
  76.  
  77. GEMTrade uses the original Ruftrade dictionaries, but the translation
  78. routines have been rewritten. A standard GEM interface has also been
  79. added sporting windowed dialogs, help bubbles, OLGA support, AV
  80. protocol support and much, much more.
  81.  
  82. Atari Computing helped to support this project, and I hope you like
  83. the result. However, the future of the program is now in your hands.
  84. While myself, Joe and Atari Computing are keen to continue support; we
  85. might get a little disgruntled if nobody registers..... It has taken
  86. months of hard work to get this far, so please, if you do use the
  87. program, do take the time to register. You will not only be supporting
  88. this project; by registering, you will encourage Atari Computing to
  89. get invloved developing similar enterprises.

  93. As an incentive to register, the unregistered version has the
  94. following limitations:

  96.    ∙ The number of words that can be translated is restricted to 1000.
  97.    ∙ Annoying dialog when the program is executed.

  108. 2  Installation and Requirements
  109. ********************************
  110.  
  111. _Installation_
  112.  
  113. Installation is very easy. Simply copy the file GEMTRADE.TOS onto your
  114. hard drive and then double click it to extract the GEMTrade archive.
  115.  
  116. If you are a single floppy drive user who would like a packed version
  117. of GEMTrade that does not need extracting, please contact me.
  118.  
  119. *Note: In version 2.x you may copy the GEMTRADE.INF file as it is no*
  120. *longer path sensitive. Registered users must not pass on GEMTRADE.INF*
  121. *files when distributing GEMTrade though.*

  123. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  125. _Requirements_
  126.  
  127. GEMTrade should run on most Atari-compatible systems with at least 1Mb
  128. of memory and a ST-HIGH display. A hard drive is not essential, but
  129. highly recommended.
  130.  
  131. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  133. Although not essential, GEMTrade can make full use of the following
  134. system extensions:
  135.  
  136.    ∙ BubbleGEM, to provide handy help bubbles for instant information
  137.      about any of the program's functions.
  138.  
  139.    ∙ OLGA, to support object linking. For example, select a source
  140.      file, edit it in an OLGA aware editor (Everest, QED, ...) and
  141.      when you save, GEMTrade will automatically translate the file.
  142.      Note: In version 2.1, OLGA is temporarily unavailable - sorry if
  143.      this causes any problems.
  144.  
  145.    ∙ Start-Me-Up, which maintains a document history list of
  146.      previously used documents, including those handled with GEMTrade.
  147.      Note: In version 2.1, the DHST protocol is temporarily not
  148.      available - sorry for any inconvenience.

  150.    ∙ GEMJing, to allow sound samples to be played for various GEMTrade
  151.      actions.

  153.    ∙ Any desktop that supports the AV-Protocol, for file dragging,
  154.      etc...

  161. 3  Using The Program
  162. ********************
  163.  
  164. GEMTrade hopefully provides an easy to use graphical user interface,
  165. which is highly compatible with all the modern trends.
  166.  
  167. If you need assistance you can call the hypertext help file by
  168. clicking the help button in the relevant dialog, or by using the help
  169. menu. Alternatively, a right click with the mouse button over an
  170. object will, if BubbleGEM is installed, providea handy help bubble
  171. describing what that object's function is.
  172.  
  173. GEMTrade now supports the BubbleGEM help daemon. If this is activated
  174. in the configuration CPX, hovering the mouse over an object will also
  175. display a help bubble.
  176.  
  177. If you wish to disable GEMTrade's support for BubbleGEM, you can do so
  178. in the Protocols sections of the Options dialog.

  181. 3.1  The Menu
  182. =============
  183.  
  184. The GEMTrade menu bar provides access to some of GEMTrade's features.
  185. Many of these do the same as clicking on the relevant icon, but some
  186. functions can only be called from the menu bar.

  319. 3.2  The Main Dialog
  320. ====================
  321.  
  322. The main dialog appears when GEMTrade is executed. It contains two
  323. groups; one for file translation, the other for word lookup.
  324.  
  325.  
  326. 3.2.1  File Translation
  327. -----------------------
  328.  
  329. To load a source file for translation, you can do any one of four
  330. things:
  331.  
  332. · Click on the button in the source file row, where the filename is
  333. displayed, and select the file with the selector that will appear.
  334.  
  335. · Drag a file from the desktop onto the GEMTrade window, or Appline
  336. button, etc...
  337.  
  338. · Load GEMTrade by dragging a file onto the GEMTRADE.PRG file. Unlike
  339. previous versions, when this method is used, the file will not be
  340. automatically translated.
  341.  
  342. · Use GEMScript.
  343.  
  344. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  345.  
  346. To translate the chosen source file, simply click the English/German
  347. flag, which is the translate button. To change the source and
  348. destination language, use the language menu.
  349.  
  350. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  351.  
  352. You will notice a variety of small buttons for the source and
  353. destination files; this is what they do:
  354.  
  355. Load the file into the selected viewer.
  356.  
  357. Load the file into the selected editor.
  358.  
  359. Use the clipboard (SCRAP.TXT) for the source file.
  360.  
  361. Reset the destination file name to the default.
  362.  
  363.  
  364. 3.2.2  Lookup
  365. -------------
  366.  
  367. As well as translating files, GEMTrade provides the facilty for
  368. looking up single words. This function works both ways, so you can
  369. translate English words to German, and German words to English.
  370.  
  371. Simply type in the word to be translated into the editable text field
  372. provided, choose the source and destination language in the language
  373. menu, and then click on the lookup 'flag' button.
  374.  
  375. The translation is then written in the line below.
  376.  
  377. If the translation was not successful, a message will appear:
  378.  
  379. · *Word not found!* The translation for the word you are looking up
  380. could not be found.

  384. _Extra Lookup Features_
  385.  
  386. The lookup editable text fields both support the standard Atari
  387. clipboard keyboard shortcuts:
  388.  
  389.    ∙ [CONTROL] + [C] = Copy to the clipboard.
  390.    ∙ [CONTROL] + [V] = Paste from the clipboard.
  391.    ∙ [CONTROL] + [X] = Cut to the clipboard.
  392.    ∙ [CONTROL] + [Y] = Erase.

  394.  
  395. 3.3  Options
  396. ============
  397.  
  398. This tabbed dialog sets various parameters for the GEMTrade
  399. environment.
  400.  
  401. It contains four sections: Paths, Protocols, Translation and Sounds.
  402.  
  403. A common icon to this dialog is the reset button which resets
  404. parameters to default values. It looks like this:
  405.  
  406.  
  407. 3.3.1  Paths
  408. ------------
  409.  
  410. _Viewer_
  411.  
  412. Specifies the program that will be called when the viewer icon is
  413. clicked on. For convenience, ST-Guide is set as the default. If you
  414. have set a different viewer and wish to return to the default, simply
  415. click the reset button to the right.
  416.  
  417. _Editor_
  418.  
  419. Defines which program will be called when the editor icon is clicked
  420. on. If you've defined an editor and wish to remove it, simply click on
  421. the reset button to the right.
  422.  
  423. _GEMJing_
  424.  
  425. If the path of GEMJing v1.30 is located here, GEMTrade can be
  426. configured to play certain sounds for various actions that are
  427. performed. See also the Sounds section of the Options dialog.
  428.  
  429.  
  430. 3.3.2  Protocols
  431. ----------------
  432.  
  433. _Use editor first for document history list_
  434.  
  435. The document history list is a list of the most recently used files on
  436. your system. It can be viewed with an application such as Thomas
  437. Much's excellent Start-Me-Up. If this option is set, the translated
  438. file will be associated with the editor first, if it is defined. If no
  439. editor is defined, then it will be associated with the viewer.
  440.  
  441. _Auto-translate for VA_START_
  442.  
  443. When a file is dragged onto the GEMTrade window, it is automatically
  444. set as the source file. If this feature is turned on, the translation
  445. process occurs automatically when a file is dragged onto the window.
  446.  
  447. _Use BubbleGEM in this Application_
  448.  
  449. You can use this switch to toggle whether GEMTrade supports BubbleGEM
  450. or not. This does not affect all running programs globally, only
  451. GEMTrade.
  452.  
  453.  
  454. 3.3.3  Translation
  455. ------------------
  456.  
  457. _Surround untranslated words with marker character_
  458.  
  459. When translating it may be useful to see some easy indication as to
  460. which words haven't been translated. If this feature is activated, the
  461. defined character will be written either side of the untranslated
  462. word.
  463.  
  464. _View destination file after translation_
  465.  
  466. If this flag is set, after GEMTrade has translated the source file, it
  467. will automatically display the destination file in the viewer.
  468.  
  469.  
  470. 3.3.4  Sounds
  471. -------------
  472.  
  473. If GEMJing is available, sounds specified in this dialog will be
  474. played when certain actions are performed within GEMTrade.
  475.  
  476.  
  477. 3.4  Statistics
  478. ===============
  479.  
  480. This dialog will display information about the last document to be
  481. translated:
  482.

  484. 3.5  Register
  485. =============
  486.  
  487. Naturally, this is the most important part of the program, and you
  488. will probably be anxious to know what to do ;-)
  489.  
  490. The registration dialog is displayed by clicking on the "Register"
  491. button in the about dialog.
  492.  
  493. Simply enter your details exactly as they appear on the registration
  494. card supplied with your master disk, and click on the "Register"
  495. button.
  496.  
  497. If you entered the details incorrectly, nothing will happen! Try
  498. entering the details again, paying particular attention to the case of
  499. the letters. If you are still having problems, contact me.
  500.  
  501. If the dialog closed, the registration process was successful and you
  502. should now see your user name in the about dialog.
  503.

  505.  
  506. 4  GEMTrade as a CAB Module
  507. ***************************
  508.  
  509. As well as functioning as a stand alone program, GEMTrade can also be
  510. used as a module for the CAB internet web browser (version 2.5+). What
  511. this means is that if you encounter a foreign web site, GEMTrade can
  512. be activated and the page will reformat in English or German. Pretty
  513. neat :-)
  514.  
  515. To install GEMTrade as a CAB module, make sure the following files are
  516. put into CAB's "Modules" directory.
  517.  
  518.    ∙ GEMTRADE.APP
  519.    ∙ GEMTRADE.RSC
  520.    ∙ GEMTRADE.MDL
  521.    ∙ GEMTRADE.INF
  522.  
  523. *Note:* It is now alright to copy the file GEMTRADE.INF to another
  524. location on your drive.
  525.  
  526. Now when CAB is run, GEMTrade can be called upon to translate the page
  527. that CAB is currently displaying. To do this, go to the "File" menu
  528. and highlight "Modules". When the submenu appears select "GEMTrade".
  529.  
  530. Alternatively, when you right click on a link, "GEMTrade" appears as
  531. an option on the pop-up menu. If it is selected, the page given by the
  532. link will be translated and then loaded into CAB.
  533.  
  534. *Note:* GEMTrade will appear greyed out if the link you right click on
  535. is not a local file. To translate a page not located locally, it must
  536. first be displayed in a CAB window.

  540. 5  GEMTrade and GEMScript
  541. *************************
  542.  
  543. The GEMTrade program can now be controlled autonomously via the
  544. GEMScript protocol. To do this you will need a GEMScript interpreter
  545. such as Scripter or Simple Script. The latter is enclosed on the
  546. master disk and you should read the provided instructions for details
  547. on how to use it.
  548.  
  549. Some example scripts for Simple Script are provided in the SCRIPTS
  550. directory on the master disk. You should look at these before trying
  551. to write your own.
  552.  
  553. Note: In version 2.1, support for GEMScript is temporarily
  554. unavailable.
  555.
