It's been awhile since any formal "news" was posted about DeHackEd, so I
figured it's about time for me to enlighten the masses. A new version of
DeHackEd (version 2.0) will be released shortly,ie, hopefully by/during the
weekend.
DeHackEd 2.0 will include quite a number of new features over 1.3, and is
highly recommended. New features will include:
Ability to read Doom 1.2, 1.666, and 2.0 exe files.
Ability to edit and save the sound, sprite, and text info for Doom
1.666 and 2.0.
Viewing frames and (maybe) playing sounds
A handy .ini file to help keep things organized
A merge function to allow multiple patch loading.
And last but not least, a markedly better interface.
A note on patch files: DeHackEd 1.3 patch files will not be supported in
Doom 1.666 or 2.0, although you can still load them into Doom 1.2. If someone
feels up to writing a conversion utility, contact me and I can give you
pointers about how to do it; however, it's tedious and I'm not going to bother
unless someone really needs that ability. Patch files for Doom 1.666 and 2.0
*should* be able to be interchanged. All the exe info is the same, with the
exception of the text section. So, you will probably be able to exchange
everything but the text between versions. (Cool!)
The most recent beta version is DHE199E.ZIP, and should be available on
ftp.uwp.edu. Get that if you are interested in the look and feel of 2.0,
but there will be a number of fixes and new features when I finally release
it. I plan on putting it on ftp.uwp.edu and infant2.sphs.indiana.edu, so
you should be able to find it either place.
Hopefully I covered everything, if anyone has questions, feel free to
write me at gregory.lewis@umich.edu.

BTW, <shameless plug time> have you tried TREE3? You'll probably enjoy it
if you haven't!
