Thank you for purchasing Norton Uninstall Deluxe. This version of
Norton Uninstall Deluxe is designed to run under Windows 95 and Windows
NT 4.0. This version is not compatible with Windows NT 3.5x, Windows
3.x, Windows for OS/2, Windows emulators such as SoftWindows, or beta
versions of Windows 98.
Please review this document in its entirety prior to installing Norton
Uninstall Deluxe as it contains late-breaking information that the
User's Guide and the online help do not contain.

1.0 General Points of Interest
-----------------
2.0 Installation
-----------------
During installation, backups of USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT are created.
You must reboot the computer after the installation is complete in
order to run Norton Uninstall Deluxe.
Norton Uninstall Deluxe 1.0 will not run correctly if it is installed
into a HIASCII directory.
3.0 Program Cleanup
-----------------
When Removing, Storing, Moving or Copying Internet browsers, we
recommend that you clear the cache folder first. If there are a
significant number of files located in the cache folder, the analysis
and resulting operations may take much longer than necessary. The
backup will also be much larger than necessary. To clear the cache
folder, use File Cleanup or AutoClean prior to performing any operation
on these programs.
When Removing, Storing or Moving programs that have files loaded in
memory, you are prompted after the operation is complete to restart the
computer. This allows Norton Uninstall Deluxe to schedule the loaded
files to be deleted when Windows restarts. Some programs write
information to the program directory during a Windows shut down. These
files will be left behind after the Windows restart as they were
created after Norton Uninstall Deluxe was finished with the operation.
Once Windows restarts you can delete the remaining files and/or folders
through Explorer.
We strongly recommend that you do not use Norton Uninstall Deluxe to
move IDE programs and office suites. These include development software
packages such as Microsoft Visual C++, Symantec C++, etc. Due to the
complex structure of these programs, all files may not be moved to the
new location, and project and include files may not be properly
updated.
Multiple removable media (zip and floppy) backups are available for
Copy only.
4.0 Disk Cleanup
-----------------
If McAfee VirusScan 3.x is installed on the system, McAfee's screen
saver replaces the current screen saver in the system.ini file. The
switch is not properly reported to File Cleanup. Therefore, the user
selected screen saver may appear Green and checked for delete in File
Cleanup. You should be aware of the screen saver you have selected and
exercise caution when deleting screen savers.
If there are a number of Microsoft applications on the system,
installed at different times, you will notice multiple groupings of the
file MSCREATE.DIR when running Duplicates Cleanup with the Probable
Duplicates option selected. You will see these different groupings
because the files are all zero bytes in size and the only
differentiator between those files is the potentially different date/time
stamps.
AutoClean creates one backup and appends files to the backup each time
it is run. This backup is automatically purged of files that have been
in the backup for 180 days. If you would like to change this value
please contact Symantec technical support for assistance.
Users of Dual-Boot Systems should note; the clean up utilities may mark
files for deletion that are required by inactive Operating Systems on
the system. Users should carefully review the files selected before
deleting them.
5.0 System Monitor, InstallGuard and Undo
-------------------
Many programs write information to the registry and create files in the
program directory only when the program is launched for the first time.
System Monitor is only able to monitor all registry entries and files
created during the installation process. If you choose to Undo the
installation of a program, those files created after the installation
may get left behind. Upon completion of an Undo, you will be prompted
to remove any additional files that were created after the program was
installed.
When using System Monitor to monitor program installations you should
not use any other programs, including Explorer, during the
installation.
Cancel the System Monitor if it attempts to automatically track an uninstall of
an application using the uninstall feature of that application. Many
applications use the same executable file to install and remove their program
and Norton System Monitor may attempt to track this procedure as an install.
Applications that do not cause a reboot and become active immediately
may leave Norton System Monitor in a scan state although the
installation is complete. Right click on the System Monitor icon in the
task bar and manually tell it to stop tracking the installation.
System Monitor will process all data recorded up to that point.
6.0 Network and NT Users
--------------------
Norton Uninstall Deluxe will not function correctly on systems with
Service Pack 2. NT systems using should be upgraded to Service Pack 3
prior to installation of Norton Uninstall Deluxe.
If you are a user on a network, be aware that any action you take on
shared drives, folders or files will affect all users who have access
to those drives, folders and/or files. You should consult with your
Network Administrator prior to performing any operation with Norton
Uninstall Deluxe.
If you are one profile on a multi-profile NT system, please be aware
that any action you take on the system's programs, folders and/or files
will affect all users who have access to those programs, folders and/or
files. You should consult with your System Administrator prior to
performing any operation with Norton Uninstall Deluxe.
Under Windows NT 4.0, System Monitor is unable to monitor 16-bit
installation programs.
Under Windows NT, the error "System Monitor could not load all files necessary.
Reinstall Program." May mean that the SYMEVENT.SYS device driver setup has been
changed. To correct the error, open the Services Manager in the Control Panel,
locate the entry for SymEvent and confirm that the Startup mode is set to
'AUTOMATIC'.
7.0 Notes
--------------------
Zero byte files are not backed up during a normal backup operation and
therefore will not be restored.
Windows Add/Remove Programs may be unable to properly remove
applications after Moved or Copied by Norton Uninstall Deluxe. Use
Norton Uninstall Deluxe to remove these applications.
When doing a Copy operation of an application to floppy disks, a Bad
Media error on a disk will return the user to Step One. We suggest you
check all disks before performing a Copy operation.
File Cleanup will scan drives that were not selected if the location of
categories selected defaults to the unselected drives. i.e. selecting
the Recycle Bin Category will cause File Cleanup to scan the default
Windows Drive even if that drive is not selected in Step One.
8.0 Compatibility Issues
--------------------
PC-Cillin II prompts users to overwrite files MFC42.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL.
Doing this will overwrite these files with older versions. Norton
Uninstall Deluxe will not run with the older versions of these files.
Due to the complex nature of Microsoft Plus Pack users should not
attempt to use Norton Uninstall Deluxe with this application.
Norton Uninstall Deluxe does not run with applications that make
changes to the Boot Record, i.e. Norton System Commander, or Norton For
Your Eyes Only.
