  8. Thank you for purchasing Norton Uninstall Deluxe. This version of
  9. Norton Uninstall Deluxe is designed to run under Windows 95 and Windows
  10. NT 4.0. This version is not compatible with Windows NT 3.5x, Windows
  11. 3.x, Windows for OS/2, Windows emulators such as SoftWindows, or beta
  12. versions of Windows 98.

  37. During installation, backups of USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT are created.
  38.  
  39. You must reboot the computer after the installation is complete in
  40. order to run Norton Uninstall Deluxe.
  41.  
  42. Norton Uninstall Deluxe 1.0 will not run correctly if it is installed
  43. into a HIASCII directory.
  44.  
  45.  
  46. 3.0 Program Cleanup
  47. -----------------
  48. When Removing, Storing, Moving or Copying Internet browsers, we
  49. recommend that you clear the cache folder first. If there are a
  50. significant number of files located in the cache folder, the analysis
  51. and resulting operations may take much longer than necessary. The
  52. backup will also be much larger than necessary. To clear the cache
  53. folder, use File Cleanup or AutoClean prior to performing any operation
  54. on these programs.

  56. When Removing, Storing or Moving programs that have files loaded in
  57. memory, you are prompted after the operation is complete to restart the
  58. computer. This allows Norton Uninstall Deluxe to schedule the loaded
  59. files to be deleted when Windows restarts. Some programs write
  60. information to the program directory during a Windows shut down. These
  61. files will be left behind after the Windows restart as they were
  62. created after Norton Uninstall Deluxe was finished with the operation.
  63. Once Windows restarts you can delete the remaining files and/or folders
  64. through Explorer.
  65.  
  66. We strongly recommend that you do not use Norton Uninstall Deluxe to
  67. move IDE programs and office suites. These include development software
  68. packages such as Microsoft Visual C++, Symantec C++, etc. Due to the
  69. complex structure of these programs, all files may not be moved to the
  70. new location, and project and include files may not be properly
  71. updated.

  73. Multiple removable media (zip and floppy) backups are available for
  74. Copy only.
  75.  
  76.  
  77. 4.0 Disk Cleanup
  78. -----------------
  79. If McAfee VirusScan 3.x is installed on the system, McAfee's screen
  80. saver replaces the current screen saver in the system.ini file.  The
  81. switch is not properly reported to File Cleanup. Therefore, the user
  82. selected screen saver may appear Green and checked for delete in File
  83. Cleanup. You should be aware of the screen saver you have selected and
  84. exercise caution when deleting screen savers.

  86. If there are a number of Microsoft applications on the system,
  87. installed at different times, you will notice multiple groupings of the
  88. file MSCREATE.DIR when running Duplicates Cleanup with the Probable
  89. Duplicates option selected. You will see these different groupings
  90. because the files are all zero bytes in size and the only
  91. differentiator between those files is the potentially different date/time
  92. stamps.

  94. AutoClean creates one backup and appends files to the backup each time
  95. it is run. This backup is automatically purged of files that have been
  96. in the backup for 180 days. If you would like to change this value
  97. please contact Symantec technical support for assistance.

  99. Users of Dual-Boot Systems should note; the clean up utilities may mark
  100. files for deletion that are required by inactive Operating Systems on
  101. the system.  Users should carefully review the files selected before
  102. deleting them.

  105. 5.0 System Monitor, InstallGuard and Undo
  106. -------------------
  107. Many programs write information to the registry and create files in the
  108. program directory only when the program is launched for the first time.
  109. System Monitor is only able to monitor all registry entries and files
  110. created during the installation process. If you choose to Undo the
  111. installation of a program, those files created after the installation
  112. may get left behind. Upon completion of an Undo, you will be prompted
  113. to remove any additional files that were created after the program was
  114. installed.
  115.  
  116. When using System Monitor to monitor program installations you should
  117. not use any other programs, including Explorer, during the
  118. installation.
  119.  
  120. Cancel the System Monitor if it attempts to automatically track an uninstall of 
  121. an application using the uninstall feature of that application.  Many 
  122. applications use the same executable file to install and remove their program 
  123. and Norton System Monitor may attempt to track this procedure as an install.  
  124.  
  125. Applications that do not cause a reboot and become active immediately
  126. may leave Norton System Monitor in a scan state although the
  127. installation is complete. Right click on the System Monitor icon in the
  128. task bar and manually tell it to stop tracking the installation.
  129. System Monitor will process all data recorded up to that point.
  130.  
  131. 6.0 Network and NT Users
  132. --------------------

  134. Norton Uninstall Deluxe will not function correctly on systems with
  135. Service Pack 2. NT systems using should be upgraded to Service Pack 3
  136. prior to installation of Norton Uninstall Deluxe.
  137.  
  138. If you are a user on a network, be aware that any action you take on
  139. shared drives, folders or files will affect all users who have access
  140. to those drives, folders and/or files. You should consult with your
  141. Network Administrator prior to performing any operation with Norton
  142. Uninstall Deluxe.
  143.  
  144. If you are one profile on a multi-profile NT system, please be aware
  145. that any action you take on the system's programs, folders and/or files
  146. will affect all users who have access to those programs, folders and/or
  147. files. You should consult with your System Administrator prior to
  148. performing any operation with Norton Uninstall Deluxe.
  149.  
  150. Under Windows NT 4.0, System Monitor is unable to monitor 16-bit
  151. installation programs.
  152.  
  153. Under Windows NT, the error "System Monitor could not load all files necessary.  
  154. Reinstall Program." May mean that the SYMEVENT.SYS device driver setup has been 
  155. changed.  To correct the error, open the Services Manager in the Control Panel, 
  156. locate the entry for SymEvent and confirm that the Startup mode is set to  
  157. 'AUTOMATIC'.

  160. 7.0 Notes
  161. --------------------
  162. Zero byte files are not backed up during a normal backup operation and
  163. therefore will not be restored.
  164.  
  165. Windows Add/Remove Programs may be unable to properly remove
  166. applications after Moved or Copied by Norton Uninstall Deluxe.  Use
  167. Norton Uninstall Deluxe to remove these applications.
  168.  
  169. When doing a Copy operation of an application to floppy disks, a Bad
  170. Media error on a disk will return the user to Step One. We suggest you
  171. check all disks before performing a Copy operation.
  172.  
  173. File Cleanup will scan drives that were not selected if the location of
  174. categories selected defaults to the unselected drives.  i.e. selecting
  175. the Recycle Bin Category will cause File Cleanup to scan the default
  176. Windows Drive even if that drive is not selected in Step One.

  179. 8.0 Compatibility Issues
  180. --------------------
  181. PC-Cillin II prompts users to overwrite files MFC42.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL.
  182. Doing this will overwrite these files with older versions.  Norton
  183. Uninstall Deluxe will not run with the older versions of these files.
  184.  
  185. Due to the complex nature of Microsoft Plus Pack users should not
  186. attempt to use Norton Uninstall Deluxe with this application.

  188. Norton Uninstall Deluxe does not run with applications that make
  189. changes to the Boot Record, i.e. Norton System Commander, or Norton For
  190. Your Eyes Only.
