  2.  Upgrading versus Updating
  3.  -------------------------
  4.  The users of anti-virus software are accustomed to update their
  5.  antiviral software at regular intervals. Updates are necessary if your
  6.  AV software is primarily a scanner. The spreading of new viruses in the
  7.  past has been relatively slow. It took a year, sometimes even two for
  8.  new viruses to become common. Now, with the explosion of the public
  9.  networks, virus spreading became much faster.
  10.  
  11.  The many forums dealing with viruses, paradoxically contributed to the
  12.  rapid dissemination of viruses. Once a virus or malware code becomes
  13.  news, then hundreds of collectors will look to add the hot item to
  14.  their collection. Many viruses escaped in the wild this way, Nightfall
  15.  and the Word.Concept macro to mention just a couple.

  17.  Some viruses set records in becoming common within three to six months
  18.  from being reported. Therefore, scanner based anti-virus software need
  19.  frequent updating. Some products are updated monthly, there is one that
  20.  updates even weekly!

  22.  InVircible has a virus scanner too. Its database contains only the most
  23.  common and widespread viruses, just about a couple of hundreds, which
  24.  are about 5% or less of the total number of viruses. Naturally, it
  25.  takes quite a long time, a year or longer, for a virus to become really
  26.  widespread. Only few viruses make it, and this is why IV's scanner has
  27.  very few viruses added to its database, annually. In 1995, to the date
  28.  of this document, only Quicksilver.1376 was added since it became
  29.  really common.

  31.  NetZ Computing keeps developing and improving InVircible on a regular
  32.  basis. These improvements are released as product upgrades, to
  33.  distinguish them from the scanners' updates.

  35.  We encourage you to send us your problems with viruses and antivirus
  36.  software, as well as your suggestions. Many improvements in InVircible
  37.  were inspired by users' suggestions and wishes.
  38.  
  39.  Do you need to upgrade an IV version?
  40.  -------------------------------------
  41.  Not necessarily! If the current version of InVircible works properly on
  42.  your machine, then it's unlikely that you need to upgrade. Unless you
  43.  want to, because of a new features included in the newer version.

  45.  A text file named WHATSNEW.xxx is released with each upgrade. In this
  46.  file you'll find a list and description of the new and improved
  47.  features. Before upgrading your current version, read the document to
  48.  decide if you need the upgrade.

  50.  There is no need to upgrade InVircible more frequently than once to
  51.  twice a year, at the most. In the five years since its first version,
  52.  InVircible's older versions, up to two years of age, still prove
  53.  efficient against new viruses that appeared just recently!

  55.  Network administrators are advised to upload the upgraded version to
  56.  the server, to the directory from which IVlogin is run (see appendix B
  57.  in the online manual). This will automatically upgrade InVircible's
  58.  version on all workstation.
  59.  
  60.  How to upgrade your licensed IV copy.
  61.  -------------------------------------
  62.  The purchase of a license for the utilization of a specific version of
  63.  InVircible is not limited in time. You licensed floppy also provides
  64.  you the possibility to upgrade without additional charges, for a period
  65.  of one year from the date of the production of the software. The
  66.  installation of the IV license to your hard disk earmarks the HARD
  67.  DISK, not the software, as an IV licensee.

  69.  To upgrade from a lower version, download the newer InVircible version
  70.  from the BBS or network. Open the ZIP file into a temporary directory,
  71.  change directory to the one containing the new version and run the
  72.  IVB.EXE program. Watch if the "Licensed" label appears at the upper
  73.  left corner of the screen. If yes, then your license is still valid for
  74.  this upgrade and you can then proceed with INSTALL/FAST. It will
  75.  overwrite the older version with the new one and it will inherit the
  76.  license of the former version.

  78.  To upgrade the license on the floppy, format the diskette (deleting all
  79.  files won't suffice, there is a hidden armor file on these floppies,
  80.  this is why it needs formatting) and copy the new version files to it.
  81.  When done, issue the command IVB /A A: (or B:) to re-install the IV
  82.  Armor on the floppy.

  84.  In case the newer version indicates "Sentry" instead of "Licensed" with
  85.  the new IV software, then the term of the license on your FLOPPY
  86.  expired for upgrades. The current last version will continue to be
  87.  functional for as long as you keep it. You can then choose to purchase
  88.  a new license (registered floppy) for another term, or stay with your
  89.  current version, for as long as you wish.

  91.  The upgrading of the license works only upward. For example, once you
  92.  changed the license from ver 6.01x to 6.02, then the lower versions
  93.  will not recognize the license anymore.

  95.  For licensed users working under OS/2 and Windows 95.

  97.  To upgrade your license to reflect both in DOS and in the 32 bit OS DOS
  98.  shell, you will need to run InVircible ONCE in a real DOS environment.
