  4. Description:
  5. QuickType is a systray  utility for quick and easy 
  6. access to the system-wide ClearType settings under 
  7. Windows XP.
  8.

  10. Requirements:
  11. * Windows XP
  12.   Since ClearType is native in Windows XP, and not 
  13.   supported by any previous version of Windows, it 
  14.   only makes sense to run this program on Windows XP.
  15.   I have never tested this program any other Windows
  16.   version so I don't know how it will behave there.

  18. * .NET Framework
  19.   You need to have the .NET framework installed. 
  20.   If you got Windows SP1 or SP2 then you already should 
  21.   have it on your system. If you don't have the .NET 
  22.   framework installed you can get it here:

  25.   The .NET framework is required to run applications
  26.   developed on Microsofts .NET platform. QuickType is 
  27.   written in C# in Visual Studio .NET so the framework is
  28.   required to run the program.

  31. Installation and usage:
  32. There is no installation files included.
  33. Simply create a folder anywhere you like (for example
  34. C:\Program Files\QuickType) and copy all files in the
  35. compressed archive to the new folder.
  36. Then create a short to the QuickType.exe file in your 
  37. start menu, quick launch bar or desktop.
  38. When you start the program it will appear in the system
  39. (the area next to the clock on the taskbar).
  40. Rightclick the QuickType icon for a menu with the 
  41. following options:

  43. * Start with Windows
  44.   Click this item if you would like QuickType to start
  45.   automatically with windows.
  46.   When the option is active, a check-mark will appear 
  47.   next to the menu-item.

  49. * ClearType Tuner
  50.   Click this item to load the ClearType Tuner PowerToy
  51.   control panel applet. QuickType will automatically
  52.   detect if you have this applet installed. If 
  53.   QuickType can't find the ClearType Tuner on your 
  54.   system, a messagebox will appear with instructions on
  55.   how to get it.

  57. * ClearType
  58.   This item represents the actual purpose of the program.
  59.   Click this item to either enable or disable ClearType on
  60.   your system.
  61.   When the option is active, a check-mark will appear 
  62.   next to the menu-item.

  64. * About
  65.   Displays a dialogbox with information about QuickType.
  66.  
  67. * Exit
  68.   Quits the program, and unloads it from the systray.

  71. How it came about:
  72. I recently discovered that ClearType actually looks 
  73. good on my good old Triniton CRT monitor - allthough
  74. ClearType primarily is for TFT displays.
  75. However, while enabling ClearType looks good when 
  76. browsing or reading a text document, it is quite 
  77. annoying to have it enabled when programming or coding.
  78. And not only that - while I like to have it enabled for 
  79. general browsing and reading, I would like to have a 
  80. quick way of disabling it when working on webdesign, 
  81. flash and things like that. After all, most users 
  82. doesn't have ClearType enabled on their systems (yet)
  83. and as a designer I need to see my design under the 
  84. same display settings as my target group.

  86. So... this was how I thought up QuickType:
  87. To make an easy shortcut for enabling and disabling 
  88. ClearType on my system, instead of going through the 
  89. start -> control panel -> tuner -> on/off routine all 
  90. the time.
