  13. Volumouse provides you a quick and easy way to adjust the sound volume on
  14. your system - simply by rolling the wheel of your wheel mouse.
  15. It allows you to define a set of rules for determining when the wheel
  16. will be used for changing the sound volume. For example: You can
  17. configure Volumouse to use your mouse wheel for volume control when the
  18. Alt key is hold down, when the left mouse button is down, when the mouse
  19. cursor is over the taskbar, and so on...
  20. When the conditions that you define are not satisfied, your mouse wheel
  21. will be used for the regular scrolling tasks, exactly as before.

  30.   Windows 2000, or Windows XP. (Windows 95 is not supported)

  55. Upgrading Volumouse from previous versions
  56. ==========================================
  57.  
  58. If you have a previous version of Volumouse, you don't have to remove the
  59. old version before installing the new one. You can simply overwrite the
  60. previous version with the new version. However, You must do it according
  61. to the following instructions:
  62. 1. Exit completely from Volumouse. (The pink button)
  63. 2. Wait one or two minutes, to allow the vlmshlp.dll file to be
  64.    released by the operating system.
  65. 3. Install Volumouse, as you did with the previous version.
  66. 4. If you get any error message related to vlmshlp.dll, restart your
  67.    computer, and then do all this process again.

  71. Installing/Removing Volumouse
  72. =============================
  73.  
  74. There are 2 methods to install Volumouse on your system:
  75. * Manual Installation: (For advanced users only !)
  76.   In order to manually install Volumouse on your system, follow the
  77.   instructions below:
  78.   1. Create a new folder for Volumouse utility (Under your 'Program
  79.      Files' folder, or anywhere else you like).
  80.   2. Extract all files from the zip file (volumouse.zip) into the
  81.      new folder that you created.
  82.   3. Optionally, create a shortcut to volumouse.exe on your desktop
  83.      or under your start-menu.
  84.   4. Start using Volumouse, simply by running the executable -
  85.      volumouse.exe
  86.  
  87.   In order to remove Volumouse from your system, follow the instructions
  88.   below:
  89.   1. To ensure that Volumouse is not running in your system, Select
  90.      'Exit Completely' from the options dialog-box or from popup menu of
  91.      the taskbar icon.
  92.   2. Delete the folder that you created during the installation
  93.      process. If you failed to delete the Volumouse helper dll
  94.      (vlmshlp.dll), wait a little time (one or two minutes) to allow this
  95.      file to be released by the operating system, and then try again.
  96.   3. Optionally, delete Volumouse configuration from the Registry
  97.      under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\NirSoft\Volumouse

  100. * Automatic Installation (With self-install executable)
  101.   In order to install Volumouse with self-install executable, follow the
  102.   instructions below:
  103.   1. Download and run the Volumouse self-install executable.
  104.   2. Select the desired installation settings, and click 'install'
  105.      to start installing Volumouse.
  106.   3. After installation is completed, run Volumouse from the your
  107.      start-menu.
  108.  
  109.   In order to remove Volumouse that you previously installed with
  110.   ZipInstaller:
  111.   1. First, you must ensure that Volumouse is not running in your
  112.      system. In order to do that, select 'Exit Completely' from the
  113.      options dialog-box (the pink button) or from popup menu of the
  114.      taskbar icon. Wait a little time to ensure that vlmshlp.dll is
  115.      completely unloaded from the system, and then continue to the next
  116.      step.
  117.   2. Go to the Add/Remove Programs module, choose Volumouse entry,
  118.      and select to remove it from your system.

  123. Using Volumouse
  124. ===============

  126. When you run Volumouse, the main options window is displayed, in order to
  127. allow you to configure Volumouse according to your needs. You can always
  128. return again to the 'options' window by clicking on the tray icon of
  129. Volumouse.
  130. Volumouse allows you to define up to 5 different rules for determining
  131. when and how the wheel should be used to control the sound volume. When
  132. you run Volumouse in the first time, it defines for you 2 default rules:
  133. When the alt key is down and when the left mouse button is down. You can
  134. accept the default settings by pressing OK button, or change the rules
  135. list according to your preferences.

  139. Wheel Mouse Rules
  140. =================
  141.  
  142. Each rule contains 4 basic fields:
  143. 1. Use the wheel when: This field represents the condition of the
  144.    rule. For example: if your select 'Shift key is down', this rule will
  145.    be activated only while the shift key is hold down. You can also
  146.    disable a rule by selecting 'Disabled' in this field.
  147. 2. Component: This field determines that sound component that you want
  148.    to control with this rule. The default and the most useful component
  149.    is the 'Master Volume' of your system.
  150. 3. Channels: The default and the most useful option in this field is
  151.    'All Channels' - which means that both right and left channels are
  152.    changed to the same values. If from some reason, you want to change
  153.    only one channel separately - you can use the 'Left Channel' and
  154.    'Right Channel' options. Starting from version 1.10, 'Mute / Unmute'
  155.    option is also available. If you select this option, scrolling the
  156.    wheel down will mute the sound, and scrolling the wheel up will unmute
  157.    the sound.
  158. 4. Steps: The number of steps added to the sound volume for each move
  159.    of the mouse wheel. If you increase this number, the volume will be
  160.    changed faster when you scroll the wheel.
  161. there are also more advanced options for each rule, you can configure
  162. them by clicking the 'More...' button of the desired rule.

  166. Non-Sound Components
  167. ====================

  169. Volumouse was originally created for controlling the sound volume with
  170. the mouse wheel. However, starting from version 1.10, I decided to add 2
  171. additional components that are not really related to sound, but they
  172. might be useful for some people:
  173. 1. Window Transparency: (Works only on Windows 2000/XP)
  174.    Allows you make any window transparent !
  175.    In order to use this feature, define a new rule with this component,
  176.    go with mouse cursor to the window that you want to make transparent,
  177.    hold down the right keys or buttons according the the condition that
  178.    you chose, and then scroll down the wheel to make the window
  179.    transparent !
  180. 2. Screen Brightness: Allows you to change the brightness of the
  181.    entire screen.
  182.    Important Notice: Changing the screen brightness is achieved by
  183.    setting the gamma ramp values into the video card. Unfortunately, many
  184.    video cards don't support this feature, so the 'Screen Brightness'
  185.    component may not work in your system.

  189. On-Screen Indicator
  190. ===================

  192. Starting from version 1.10, Volumouse allows you display an indicator on
  193. the screen when you use the wheel for adjusting the volume.
  194. You can configure the on-screen indicator by using the following options
  195. in the 'advanced rule options' dialog-box: (click the 'More...' button in
  196. order to get this dialog-box)
  197. * Type: The type of the on-screen indicator. You can select vertical
  198.   trackbar, horizontal trackbar, or 'none' - if you don't want to display
  199.   any indicator.
  200. * Size: The size of indicator - in pixels.
  201. * Delay: The number of milliseconds that the indicator will be
  202.   displayed on the screen after you finish to adjust the volume. The
  203.   default value is 500 milliseconds.
  204. * Position: the horizontal and vertical position of the indicator. By
  205.   default, the indicator is displayed in the position of the mouse cursor.
  206. * Transparency: Allows you to display the indicator as transparent.
  207.   Only works on Windows 2000/XP.

  211. Other Options
  212. =============

  215. * Mixer Device: The sound device that you want to use in Volumouse.
  216. * Display icon in the system tray: By default, the icon of Volumouse is
  217.   displayed in the system tray (taskbar). When you click the icon with
  218.   the left mouse button, the main options window is displayed. If from
  219.   some reason you don't want this icon to appear in your taskbar, you can
  220.   hide it by unchecking this option. When this option is unchecked, the
  221.   only way to access the options windows - is by running the executable
  222.   of Volumouse (volumouse.exe)
  223. * Load Volumouse at startup: If this option is checked, Volumouse will
  224.   be automatically loaded after you reboot your computer.
  225. * Display this window when you start Volumouse: By default, the
  226.   'Options' window is displayed each time that you run Volumouse. If you
  227.   want to avoid this, uncheck this option

  231. Translating Volumouse to the languages
  232. ======================================

  234. In order to translate Volumouse to other language, follow the
  235. instructions below:
  236. 1. Run Volumouse with /savelangfile parameter:
  237.    volumouse.exe /savelangfile
  238.    A file named volumouse_lng.ini will be created in the folder of
  239.    Volumouse utility.
  240. 2. Open the created language file in Notepad or in any other text
  241.    editor.
  242. 3. Translate all string entries to the desired language. Optionally,
  243.    you can also add your name and/or a link to your Web site.
  244.    (TranslatorName and TranslatorURL values) If you add this information,
  245.    it'll be used in the 'About' window.
  246. 4. After you finish the translation, Run Volumouse, and all translated
  247.    strings will be loaded from the language file.
  248.    If you want to run Volumouse without the translation, simply rename
  249.    the language file, or move it to another folder.

  257. distribute this utility via floppy disk, CD-ROM, Internet, or in any
  258. other way, as long as you don't charge anything for this. If you
