  23. This document describes the installation procedure and usage information
  24. for the PIIX Bus Master IDE Drivers for Windows NT*. Also included 
  25. are release notes describing any problems or issues with the software which 
  26. were known at the time of shipment.

  53. * 1.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS                                                  *

  55. This section describes system requirements for the PIIX Bus Master IDE Device
  56. Driver for Windows NT.  Refer to the Release Notes section of this document
  57. for additional information regarding this release.
  58.  
  59. Hardware:
  60.  
  61. 1.  The system must contain a supported processor and PIIX device as 
  62.     specified by the NOTE at the beginning of this document.
  63.  
  64. 2.  Ensure that a mouse is connected to the system.
  65.  
  66. 3.  Do not use any other add-in IDE (PCI or ISA) card in the system during
  67.     installation.
  68.  
  69.  
  70. Operating System:
  71.  
  72. 1.  Windows NT Version 3.5, 3.51, or 4.0 must be installed on the system 
  73.     prior to installing the driver.
  74.  
  75. 2.  Perform installation off of the on-board primary PIIX IDE interface.
  76.  
  77.  
  78. BIOS:
  79.  
  80. The BIOS must properly initialize the PIIX IDE interface for bus master
  81. operation.
  82.

  84. * 2.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE                                              *
  85. ****************************************************************************
  86. This installation procedure is specific only to the version of the driver
  87. and installation file included in this package.  
  88.  
  89. There are two different subsections for this section:
  90.     2a.  Installing the Software on Systems with Windows NT 3.5 or 3.51
  91.     2b.  Installing the Software on Systems with Windows NT 4.0
  92.  
  93. ****************************************************************************
  94. * 2a.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE ON SYSTEMS WITH WINDOWS NT 3.5 or 3.51      *
  95. ****************************************************************************
  96. This subsection describes how to install the software on a system where 
  97. Windows NT Version 3.5 or 3.51 is installed.
  98.  
  99. NOTE:   This procedure assumes that the driver (PIIXIDE.SYS), installation 
  100.         file (OEMSETUP.INF) and tag file (DISK1.NT) are located in the same 
  101.         directory.  Record the locations of the driver installation and 
  102.         Windows NT directories before installing the driver.
  103.  
  104.         If the driver is installed on the system, un-install the driver 
  105.         (following the directions in the "Un-installing the Software" 
  106.         section) PRIOR to re-installing the driver.
  107.  
  108. 1.  Check the System Requirements.  Windows NT must be fully installed and
  109.     running on the system prior to installing the driver.
  110.  
  111. 2.  Close any running applications.
  112.  
  113. 3.  From the Program Manager, double click on "Windows NT Setup" in the
  114.     "Main" group.
  115.  
  116. 4.  Select "Options"|"Add\Remove SCSI Adapters" from the menu bar.
  117.  
  118. 5.  The "SCSI Adapter Setup" message box will be displayed.
  119.      The currently installed SCSI adapter drivers will be displayed.
  120.  
  121.     The display MAY list the default driver, 
  122.     "IDE CD-ROM (Atapi 1.2) / Dual-Channel PCI IDE Controller"
  123.     OR a previous install of the PIIX Bus Master IDE driver, 
  124.     "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller".
  125.  
  126.     (NOTE: this text may vary according to the release of Windows NT*.)  
  127.  
  128.     If the default ATAPI driver was installed previously, a dialog box will 
  129.     appear, stating that the default driver is already on the system.  
  130.  
  131.     If NONE of these adapter drivers are listed, go to step 8.
  132.  
  133. 6.  If the "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" driver is listed, 
  134.     select it.  Then, select "Remove" to remove the driver.
  135.  
  136. 7.  If the default driver ("IDE CD-ROM (Atapi 1.2) / Dual-Channel PCI IDE") 
  137.     is listed, select it.  Then, select "Remove" to remove the driver.
  138.  
  139. 8.  From the "SCSI Adapter Setup" dialog box, click on the "Add..." button
  140.     to add a new driver.
  141.  
  142. 9.  Setup will show a message box explaining how to recover from a
  143.     bad installation.  Select the "OK" button.
  144.  
  145. 7.  The "Select SCSI Adapter Option" dialog box will appear; select
  146.     "Other (Requires a disk from a hardware manufacturer)" from the
  147.     "Adapter:" list box.
  148.  
  149. 8.  The "Insert Diskette" dialog box will appear.  Specify the location of 
  150.     the driver installation directory when prompted to do so. 
  151.  
  152. 9.  The "Select OEM Option" dialog box will appear; select
  153.     "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" and click 'OK' .
  154.  
  155. 10. The "Select SCSI Adapter Option" dialog box will reappear with
  156.     "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" now appearing in the 
  157.     "Adapter:" list box.  Click on the "Install" button.
  158.  
  159.     NOTES
  160.     a. If the driver is currently installed on the system, a dialog
  161.     box will appear that states that "The SCSI Adapter selected is already 
  162.     installed."  If this occurs, select "Cancel" and un-install the driver
  163.     (according to the procedures in the "Un-Installing the Software" section)    
  164.     prior to installing the driver.
  165.  
  166.     b.  If the driver was installed previously (but not currently 
  167.     installed), a dialog box will appear that states that driver for the 
  168.     "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" is already on the system.  If 
  169.     this occurs, select "New" to install the new driver.
  170.  
  171.  
  172. 11. The "Windows NT Setup" dialog box will appear prompting for the path of
  173.     the installation files.    Specify the location of the driver 
  174.     installation directory when prompted to do so.  Click on the "Continue" 
  175.     button.
  176.  
  177. NOTE:   This procedure assumes that the driver (PIIXIDE.SYS), installation 
  178.         file (OEMSETUP.INF) and tag file (DISK1.NT) are located in the same 
  179.         directory.
  180.  
  181.  
  182. 12. If installation was successful, the "SCSI Adapter Setup" dialog box will
  183.     reappear, and "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" will be listed. 
  184.     The PIIX Bus Master Driver for Windows NT (PIIXIDE.SYS) driver would have 
  185.     been installed.
  186.  
  187. 13. Select "Close" to exit "SCSI Adapter Setup", exit "Windows NT Setup",
  188.     and reboot the system as directed in order for the changes to take
  189.     effect.
  190.  
  191. After installation, the PIIXIDE.SYS file is stored in the 
  192. <Windows NT directory>\System32\Drivers directory.
  193.

  195. * 2b.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE ON SYSTEMS WITH WINDOWS NT 4.0              *
  196. ****************************************************************************
  197. This subsection describes how to install the software on a system where 
  198. Windows NT Version 4.0 is installed.
  199.  
  200. NOTE:   This procedure assumes that the driver (PIIXIDE.SYS), installation 
  201.         file (OEMSETUP.INF) and tag file (DISK1.NT) are located in the same 
  202.         directory.  Record the locations of the driver installation and 
  203.         Windows NT directories before installing the driver.
  204.  
  205.         If the driver is installed on the system, un-install the driver 
  206.         (following the directions in the "Un-installing the Software" 
  207.         section) PRIOR to re-installing the driver.
  208.  
  209. 1.  Check the System Requirements.  Windows NT must be fully installed and

  220. 6.  Click on the folder tab labeled "Drivers".
  221.     The currently installed SCSI adapter drivers will be listed in the 
  222.     Drivers menu.    
  223.  
  224.     The display MAY list the default driver, 
  225.     "IDE CD-ROM (Atapi 1.2) / Dual-Channel PCI IDE Controller"
  226.     OR a previous install of the PIIX Bus Master IDE driver, 
  227.     "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller".

  235. 8.  If the default driver ("IDE CD-ROM (Atapi 1.2) / Dual-Channel PCI IDE") 
  236.     is listed, select it.  Then, select "Remove" to remove the driver.
  237.  
  238. 9.  Select "Add..." to add a new driver.
  239.  
  240. 8.  From the "Install Disk" dialog box, select "Have Disk".
  241.              
  242. 9.  The "Windows NT Setup" dialog box will appear prompting for the path of
  243.     the installation files.   Specify the location of the driver 
  244.     installation directory when prompted to do so.  
  245.  
  246. NOTE:   This procedure assumes that the driver (PIIXIDE.SYS), installation 
  247.         file (OEMSETUP.INF) and tag file (DISK1.NT) are located in the same 
  248.         directory.

  250. 10. Click on "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" driver and then click 
  251.     "Ok".
  252.  
  253. NOTES
  254.     If the driver was previously installed on the system, a dialog
  255.     box will appear that states that driver for the 
  256.     "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" is already on the system.  If 
  257.     this occurs, select "New" to install the new driver.
  258.  
  259. 13. When prompted, reboot the system as directed in order for the changes to 
  260.     take effect.

  264. * 3.  VERIFYING INSTALLATION OF THE DRIVER                                 *

  267. the driver and installation file included in this package.

  270.     3a.  Verifying Installation on Systems with Windows NT 3.5 or 3.51
  271.     3b.  Verifying Installation on Systems with Windows NT 4.0
  272.

  274. * 3a.  VERIFYING INSTALLATION ON SYSTEMS WITH WINDOWS NT 3.5 or 3.51       *

  276. This subsection describes how to verify installation of the software on a 
  277. system where Windows NT Version 3.5 or 3.51 is installed.
  278.  
  279. This installation verification procedure is specific only to the version of 
  280. the driver and installation file included in this package.  
  281.  
  282. In order to verify the installation of the driver:
  283.  
  284. 1. From the Program Manager, open the Administrative Tools group
  285.  
  286. 2. Invoke the "Windows NT Diagnostics" application.
  287.  
  288. 3. Click on the Drivers button.  
  289.    The driver (PIIXIDE) should be listed, and labelled as running.  
  290.    The default drivers (ATDISK, ATAPI) should NOT be listed or running.
  291.  
  292.  
  293. ****************************************************************************
  294. * 3b.  VERIFYING INSTALLATION ON SYSTEMS WITH WINDOWS NT 4.0               *
  295. ****************************************************************************
  296. This subsection describes how to verify installation of the software on a 
  297. system where Windows NT Version 4.0 is installed.
  298.  
  299. This installation verification procedure is specific only to the version of 
  300. the driver and installation file included in this package.  
  301.  
  302. 1.  Select "My Computer". 
  303.  
  304. 2.  Open the "Control Panel" Folder.
  305.  
  306. 3.  Invoke the "SCSI Adapters" applet.
  307.  
  308. 4.  A list of active SCSI adapters and connected devices will be displayed.
  309.     One or more instances of the PIIX Bus Master IDE Driver,
  310.     "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller" should be listed.  
  311.     
  312.     The default driver,
  313.     "IDE CD-ROM (Atapi 1.2) / Dual-Channel PCI IDE Controller"
  314.     should not be listed.
  315.     (NOTE: this text may vary according to the release of Windows NT*.)  
  316.  
  317.     One instance will be listed for each controller interface of the PIIX 
  318.     that is currently enabled with devices connected to it.
  319.  
  320.  
  321. ****************************************************************************
  322. * 4.  UN-INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE                                           *
  323. ****************************************************************************
  324. This procedure allows one to un-install the PIIX Bus Master IDE driver, and
  325. restore the default Windows NT driver for IDE support.  (Note that this 
  326. procedure assumes the above installation process was successful.)
  327.  
  328. This un-installation procedure is specific only to the version of the driver
  329. and installation file included in this package.  
  330.  
  331. There are two different subsections for this section:
  332.     4a.  Un-Installing the Software on Systems with Windows NT 3.5 or 3.51
  333.     4b.  Un-Installing the Software on Systems with Windows NT 4.0
  334.

  336. * 4a.  UN-INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE ON SYSTEMS WITH WINDOWS NT 3.5 or 3.51   *

  338. This subsection describes how to un-install the software on a system where 
  339. Windows NT Version 3.5 or 3.51 is installed.
  340.  
  341. This un-installation procedure is specific only to the version of the driver
  342. and installation file included in this package.  
  343.  
  344. 1.  From the Program Manager, double click on "Windows NT Setup" in the
  345.     Main group.

  356. 6.  If no ATAPI CD-ROM is connected to the system, go to step 8.

  358. 7.  Install the default ATAPI CD-ROM driver that was shipped with Windows NT*
  359.     at this time by clicking the "Add..." button.  
  360.     
  361.     The default driver may be listed in the "Select SCSI Adapter Option" 
  362.     dialog box as 
  363.     "IDE CD-ROM (Atapi 1.2) / Dual-Channel PCI IDE". 
  364.     (NOTE:  this text may vary according to the release of Windows NT*.)  
  365.     If the default ATAPI driver was installed previously, a dialog box will 
  366.     appear, stating that the default driver is already on the system.  If 
  367.     this occurs, select "Current" to install the default driver.
  368.  
  369.     If the the default ATAPI driver is not installed at this time, CD-ROMs 
  370.     may not be visible when the system restarts.  This is due to the fact 
  371.     that the default ATDISK IDE driver will be re-enabled during un-install.  
  372.  
  373. 8.  Exit the setup program and reboot the system as directed in order for
  374.     the changes to take effect.
  375.

  377. * 4b.  UN-INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE ON SYSTEMS WITH WINDOWS NT 4.0           *
  378. ****************************************************************************
  379. This subsection describes how to un-install the software on a system where

  409.     "Standard mass storage controllers".

  412. 10. In the SCSI Adapter dialog, select the default ATAPI driver, 
  413.     "IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/Dual-channel PCI IDE Controller" 
  414.     and click "Ok" to install the driver.
  415.     (NOTE: this text may vary according to the release of Windows NT*.)  
  416.  
  417. NOTES
  418.     If the driver was previously installed on the system, a dialog

  426.  
  427. ****************************************************************************
  428. * 5.  TROUBLESHOOTING                                                      *
  429. ****************************************************************************
  430. The following procedure assumes that the hardware/software requirements from
  431. above have been satisfied.  The following procedure also assumes that the
  432. installation of the driver was performed as described in the 'Verifying 
  433. Installation of the Driver' section.  Refer to the 'Release Notes' section
  434. of the document for additional information.
  435.  
  436. COMMON PROBLEMS:
  437. ****************
  438.  
  439. 1.  The device is incompatible with PCI Bus Master IDE operation.
  440.     This is due to the fact that the device does not work properly when
  441.     accessed in a PCI Bus Master IDE fashion.  Contact the device
  442.     manufacturer for more information.
  443.  
  444. 2.  Verify the length of the cables that are being used to connect the IDE or
  445.     ATAPI devices to the primary and secondary PIIX IDE interfaces.  The
  446.     length of these cables from END-TO-END should not exceed 18 inches
  447.     (0.46 m).  Furthermore, the capacitance of the cable should not exceed
  448.     35 pF.
  449.  
  450. ****************************************************************************
  451. * 6.  IDENTIFYING THE SOFTWARE VERSION NUMBER                              *
  452. ****************************************************************************
  453. The driver's version can be determined by using one or more of the following
  454. procedures.
  455.  
  456. PROCEDURE 1:  Reading Windows* properties embedded in the driver file.
  457.  
  458. The driver version can be obtained by querying the driver file's properties 
  459. under File Manager.
  460.  
  461. 1.  Under Windows NT 3.5 or 3.51, invoke the "File Manager" application.
  462.     Under Windows NT 4.0, invoke the "Explorer" application.
  463.  
  464. 2.  Select the path containing the driver file.  
  465.     
  466.     When the driver is installed, the driver is in the following 
  467.     directory:
  468.         <Windows NT directory>\System32\Drivers        
  469.  
  470. 3.  Select the driver file, "PIIXIDE.SYS".
  471.  
  472. 4.  Open the "File" menu.
  473.  
  474. 5.  Click on the "Properties" item.
  475.  
  476. 6.  Click on the "Version" tab.
  477.  
  478. 7.  The driver's version should be listed in the 'Product Version' 
  479.     portion of the dialog.
  480.  
  481. PROCEDURE 2:  Using the SEEVER.EXE utility.
  482.  
  483. The following procedure uses the SEEVER.EXE utility to identify the version
  484. number and build date of the PIIX Bus Master IDE driver.  This procedure
  485. assumes that the SEEVER.EXE utility and the driver file (PIIXIDE.SYS) are in
  486. the same working directory.
  487.  
  488. 1.  Open an MS-DOS command window.
  489.  
  490. 2.  Go to the directory where the driver is installed:
  491.     Type
  492.         cd <Windows NT directory>\System32\Drivers
  493.  
  494. 3.  Run the version identification utility (SEEVER.EXE):
  495.     Type 
  496.         <driver installation drive & directory>\SEEVER PIIXIDE.SYS
  497.  
  498.         Assumes that SEEVER.EXE is located in the driver's
  499.         installation directory.
  500.  
  501. ****************************************************************************
  502. * 7.  CONTENTS OF THE DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE                                 *

  505. following items:

  526. * 8.  STORAGE DEVICES SUPPORTED BY THE DRIVER                              *
  527. ****************************************************************************
  528. The driver supports only ATA fixed disk and ATAPI CD-ROM devices connected 
  529. to the PIIX IDE interface.  The driver only supports ATAPI CD-ROM devices; 
  530. the driver does not support ATAPI tape drives or other ATAPI device types.
  531.  
  532. During initialization, the driver will auto-identify all the devices 
  533. connected to the PIIX IDE interface.  Depending on the capabilities of the 
  534. devices connected to the system, the driver will initialize the PIIX IDE 
  535. interface for bus mastering operation.
  536.  
  537. Only ATA fixed disk and ATAPI CD-ROM devices identified as bus master 
  538. capable will be accessed as a bus master;  all other ATA fixed disk and 
  539. ATAPI CD-ROM devices will be accessed in a PIO-only fashion.  In general, 
  540. bus mastering is possible for ATA fixed disk and ATAPI CD-ROM devices that 
  541. support the following DMA timing modes:
  542.  
  543.     Single Word DMA Mode 2
  544.     Multi-Word DMA Mode 1
  545.     Multi-Word DMA Mode 2
  546.  
  547. These devices will be accessed by the driver in either a bus mastering or a
  548. PIO-fashion, depending on the specific transfer conditions.
  549.

  572. The driver supports general CD-ROM operations such as: file transfers, data
  573. streaming and audio.  Advanced CD-ROM applications/features (VideoCD*, CDPlus*, 
  574. multi-CD changers, etc), especially those outside of the scope of the
  575. current Windows NT CD-ROM support, have not been tested with this driver.  
  576. If a problem is encountered, un-install the driver.
  577.  
  578. For ATAPI CD drives, only Read-Only access is supported for data transfer 
  579. operations.  Write data transfer operations for ATAPI CD drives (including
  580. applications that write to CD media) are not supported by this driver.  
  581.  
  582. Since the driver does not support ATAPI tape drives, this release of the 
  583. driver should not be installed on systems with ATAPI tape drives.  If the 
  584. driver has been installed on a system with an ATAPI tape drive and problems 
  585. are experienced, un-install the driver.

  587. The PIIX Bus Master IDE Driver for Windows NT has designed for and tested 
  588. with versions 3.5, 3.51 and 4.0 of the Windows NT operating system (Production 
  589. Versions).
  590.  
  591. This release version addresses an issue with previous versions of the driver
  592. (all revisions previous to Version 1.67) in which there was a small 
  593. probability that PCI Bus Master IDE operation would be disabled during driver 
  594. initialization for certain system configurations.  This release version has 
  595. changes that ensure that PCI Bus Master IDE operation is always utilized in 
  596. system configurations containing DMA-capable drives, which are described in 
  597. the "Storage Devices Supported by the Driver" section.

  600. * 9b.  RELEASE-SPECIFIC TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION                        *

  602. Verifying the installation of the driver and other generic troubleshooting 
  603. is discussed in the "TROUBLESHOOTING" section above.  This section describes
  604. release-specific troubleshooting.

  606. This section contains a list of known problems with certain system
  607. configurations discovered during testing of the driver.  A list of all
  608. storage devices tested with the driver is given below in the "RELEASE
  609. TESTING INFORMATION" section of this document.

  611. If the solution given to any of the problems listed below is to un-install 
  612. the driver, follow the un-installation instructions outlined above in the
  613. section "UN-INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE".
  614.  
  615.     Issue:      The system does not operate reliably or fails to boot when 
  616.                 the driver is installed. 
  617.  
  618.     Solution:   Un-install the driver.

  621.     Issue:      One or more of the IDE/ATAPI drives on the system fail to
  622.                 perform correctly and/or is not recognized by the driver.

  624.     Solution:   Ensure that devices on the system are connected according to 
  625.                 the manufacturers' documentation.

  627.                 If the system still fails to operate reliably, Un-install 
  628.                 the driver.

  631.     Issue:      The CD-ROM drive fails to perform correctly after the driver
  632.                 has been installed (e.g. audio CD-ROMs or advanced CD-ROM
  633.                 applications fail to perform correctly).

  638.     Issue:      The driver is not compatible with EZ-Drive* floppy boot
  639.                 protection option.

  643.                 PIIX Bus Master IDE Driver for Windows NT.  If, for any 
  644.                 reason, the floppy boot protection cannot be disabled, the 
  645.                 driver should not be installed.
