  36.     INSTALLING THE WINDOWS NT DRIVER

  39. If you are not installing from the Revolution(tm)3D CD-ROM, you should make
  40. a backup of your diskette before installing.
  41.   Example:  diskcopy a: a:
  42.  
  43. * NOTE * This driver will not install correctly from a Networked or
  44.          Local hard drive. If the driver was downloaded from one of
  45.          Number Nine's on-line services, place the files on a high-
  46.          density 3.5" floppy diskette before installing. 
  47.  
  48.  
  49. Steps for installing the Windows NT driver
  50. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  51.  
  52.  1.  After installing the Revolution(tm)3D board in the system, start
  53.      Windows NT in VGA Mode by selecting the Windows NT WorkStation
  54.      Version 4.00 [VGA mode] option from the NT Boot Menu.
  55.  
  56.  2.  When NT finishes loading, log in as a user who has permission to
  57.      change system settings (like administrator).
  58.      You may receive a warning message saying:
  59.      "Invalid Display Settings: The currently selected display resolution
  60.      is invalid".
  61.      Ignore the instructions in this message and Click or select OK.
  62.  
  63.  3.  Open the "Start" Menu by using the task bar.
  64.  
  65.  4.  Highlight "Settings" and open the "Control Panel" folder.
  66.  
  67.  5.  Select or double click on the "Display" icon.  The "Display
  68.      Properties" window will pop up.
  69.     
  70.  6.  Select the "Settings" tab from the "Display Properties" window.
  71.  
  72.  7.  Select or click on the "Display Type..." button.  The "Display 
  73.      Type" window will pop up.
  74.  
  75.  8.  Select or click on the "Change..." button.  The "Change Display"
  76.      window will pop up.
  77.  
  78.  9.  Select or click on the "Have Disk..." button.  The "Install From
  79.      Disk" window will pop up.
  80.  
  81. 10.  If you are installing from the Revolution(tm)3D CD-ROM, change the installation
  82.      disk setting to the \WINNT40\ subdirectory on the CD-ROM (i.e. if your
  83.      CD-ROM is drive D:, then you should type D:\WINNT40\ ).  Select or click
  84.      on the "OK" button.
  85.  
  86.      If you are installing from a floppy disk, place the Number Nine
  87.      Revolution(tm)3D Windows NT v4.0 Display Driver Diskette
  88.      in Drive A: and click or select the OK button.
  89.  
  90. 11.  A window will pop-up indicating the name of the display driver found.
  91.      Select or Click on the OK button.  A window will then pop-up asking if
  92.      you wish to proceed to install the new drivers.  Select or Click on the
  93.      "Yes" button.
  94.  
  95. 12.  A pop-up window will inform you that you have successfully installed
  96.      the drivers and that you must reboot in order for the changes to take
  97.      effect.  Select or click on the "OK" button.
  98.  
  99. 13.  Close the "Display Type" window and then the "Display Properties"
  100.      window.
  101.  
  102. 14.  A "Systems Settings Change" window will pop-up and ask you if you  
  103.      wish to restart your computer using the newly installed drivers.
  104.      Select or click on the "Yes" button to reboot.
  105.  
  106. 15.  Remove any floppy disk from your A: drive, and make sure that an
  107.      Revolution(tm)3D graphics card is installed in your computer.
  108.  
  109. 16.  The next time you boot into Windows NT 4.0, you will be using your
  110.      new Revolution(tm)3D card and display driver.
  111.  
  112. 17.  After the system restarts, you will receive the following message:
  113.      "Invalid Display Settings:  A new graphics driver has been installed.
  114.      The default display resolution has been temporarily used by the system.
  115.      Use the Display Option in the Windows NT Control Panel to select your
  116.      preferred display resolution."  Click or select OK.
  117.  
  118. 18.  If the Display Settings page is not visible, either open it by selecting
  119.      it through the task bar or open it as detailed in steps (2) through (4) 
  120.      above.
  121.      
  122. 19.  Select the desired resolution (desktop area), color depth (palette),
  123.      and refresh rate (frequency). Choose "LIST ALL MODES" to see a list
  124.      of valid display modes or refer to the "Supported Resolutions" section
  125.      of this document for a list of driver supported modes.
  126.  
  127.  
  128.     * NOTE * BE SURE TO TEST THE SELECTED MODE BEFORE RESTARTING WINDOWS NT.
  129.              IF YOUR MONITOR DOES NOT SUPPORT YOUR CURRENT SELECTION, THE
  130.              SYSTEM WILL RETURN WITH A BLANK SCREEN AND MONITOR DAMAGE MAY
  131.              RESULT.  THE TEST WILL ONLY SET THE MODE FOR 5 SECONDS AND
  132.              RETURN TO ALLOW YOU TO SELECT ANOTHER IF THE FIRST IS NOT
  133.              SUPPORTED.  IF THE TEST BITMAP DISPLAYS PROPERLY, THE MONITOR
  134.              IS CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING THE SELECTED RESOLUTION AND VERTICAL
  135.              REFRESH RATE.

  138.     * NOTE * If the system fails to restart or is unable to locate the file
  139.              N9I3D.SYS, try changing the PCI interrupt setting in the
  140.              system CMOS BIOS.  An IRQ setting will be assigned to the PCI
  141.              slot that the Revolution(tm)3D card is in.  In some cases,
  142.              the interrupt assigned to the PCI slot may cause the driver
  143.              to fail when loading.  Each computer has a different CMOS setup
  144.              and you will need to check the owner's manual for your system
  145.              motherboard.

  224.               can impact performance.  Please consult your monitor manual
  225.               for information on maximum supported resolutions and refresh
  226.               rates.

  230.     CHANGING THE VERTICAL REFRESH RATE
  231. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  232.  
  233.   1. Open the "Start" Menu by using the task bar.
  234.  
  235.   2. Highlight "Settings" and open the "Control Panel" folder.
  236.  
  237.   3. Double click or select the Display Icon.  Click on the Settings tab. 
  238.  
  239.   4. Click on or select the Refresh Frequency pull down box and select
  240.      the refresh rate you desire.
  241.  
  242.   5. *IMPORTANT* Click the Test button and click OK to test the display.
  243.      
  244.      * NOTE * BE SURE TO TEST THE SELECTED MODE BEFORE RESTARTING WINDOWS NT.
  245.               IF YOUR MONITOR DOES NOT SUPPORT YOUR CURRENT SELECTION, THE
  246.               SYSTEM WILL RETURN WITH A BLANK SCREEN AND MONITOR DAMAGE MAY
  247.               RESULT.  THE TEST WILL ONLY SET THE MODE FOR 5 SECONDS AND
  248.               RETURN TO ALLOW YOU TO SELECT ANOTHER IF THE FIRST IS NOT
  249.               SUPPORTED.  IF THE TEST BITMAP DISPLAYS PROPERLY, THE MONITOR

  253.   6. If the TEST COLOR BITMAP design displayed properly, click or select YES.
  254.  
  255.   7. In Display Properties, click or select APPLY to have the new rate take
  256.      effect.
  257.

  259.     HARDWARE ACCELERATION FOR 3D
  260. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  261.  
  262. The Revolution(tm)3D supports accelerated 3D, both 16-bit and 32-bit
  263. Z-Buffering, and Double Buffering for smooth redraws of 3D objects. Like all
  264. true 3D accelerator cards, this requires large amounts of on-board memory.
  265.  
  266. 3D acceleration on 4MB versions of the Revolution(tm)3D is only supported at
  267. resolutions up to 800x600 @ 65k colors, or 640x480 @ 16.8M colors.
  268. On the 8MB version of the Revolution(tm)3D, 3D acceleration is supported at
  269. resolutions up to 1152x864 @ 65k colors, and up to 800x600 @ 16.8M colors.
  270.  
  271. At higher resolutions, 3D operations are performed in software, making them
  272. much slower.

  291. Even though you may have just received your Number Nine software, 
  292. newer versions may be available. Free upgrades are provided to 
  293. all Number Nine customers via the Number Nine Bulletin Board 
  294. System (BBS), Internet World Wide Web (WWW) and FTP, and CompuServe
  295. For more information on these services, see sections V through VIII
  296. of this document.

  298. To see if you have the latest version, compare the version number
  299. of your software (on the label of the provided diskette or in the
  300. text file 9NTVERS.TXT included with the driver) with the version
  301. number of the software on the BBS, WWW/FTP, or CompuServe.

  324. The latest driver updates can be found in each product's file 
  325. area, and files of general interest (shareware, etc.) can be 
  326. found in the General library.  An E-mail system is available 
  327. for technical questions about Number Nine products or about 
  328. the BBS in general.  A complete listing of available files can 
  329. be downloaded by invoking the "Download List of Files" command 
  330. from any file library menu.

  332. On the US BBS, RIP graphics are supported, and a RIP compatible 
  333. terminal program is available in the General library 
  334. (RIPTM154.ZIP).

  336. Many files are self-extracting, but some files will require the 
  337. latest version of PKUNZIP to decompress.  PKUNZIP is available 
  338. in the General library (filename PKZ204G.EXE), and can also be 
  339. found on most on-line services such as CompuServe and America 
  340. On-line.

  344.     WORLD GROUP MANAGER  (WGM)

  347. Number Nine's BBS now supports the Worldgroup Windows-based BBS client.
  348. Worldgroup Manager is a program which connects you to any on-line 
  349. service running Worldgroup server software.  You can download the 
  350. client software from the General Library on the Number Nine BBS.
