SHAREWARE NOTICE
This game is SHAREWARE. This means that if you like it, then you must send
us £15 or the US$ Equivalent. It is well worth doing this because in return, we
send you the REGISTERED version of Ultra Peril Snake which includes 100 new
levels and the level editor.
To register, send £15 or the US$ equivalent to:
Remember to include your name and address. Disks will be 3 1/2 inch formatted
double sided unless otherwise requested. (We can supply the game on 5 1/4 inch
disks if necessary).
Checks only, made payable to Beau Chesluk.
AIM OF THE GAME
Eat all of the flashing food items (by moving Ultra Peril Snake over them)
without running into yourself or the walls. Ultra Peril Snake will grow longer
after you eat each food item. To complete a level, you need to eat a certain
amount of food. Check the bar chart at the bottom of the screen to see how much
more food you need to eat.
To move the snake, use the keyboard. You can choose which keys to use in
the configuration screen (F3 from the menu). To start the snake moving, press
any key. The snake will not stop moving until you complete the level or die (by
hitting your body or a wall).
There are other bonus objects which you may want to eat to increase your
score or number of lives. These are described on the next page.
FOOD
Food items are any of these shapes. They may be animated, but they still
count as food if they are not animated. Eating a food item will increase your
length and your score. To finish the level, eat the amount of food items
needed. This amount is displayed at the bottom of the screen.
2 FOODS OBJECT
This object counts as two food items, which allows you to finish the level
sooner. When you eat one of these, your snake does not increase in length and
your score does not go up.
TELEPORT
If you drive your snake through a teleport, it will appear somewhere else
in the level. The place where you appear is chosen at random, so you may be
teleported to a dangerous place.
EXTRA LIFE
increases the number of lives you have by one.
EXPAND BLOCK
Eating one of these makes your snake enlarge. This makes the game more
dangerous as it makes it harder to avoid running into your tail.
BONUSES
These increase your score by a certain amount.
SHRINK BLOCK
This makes your snake shrink. It is the opposite of the Expand Block.
DIRECTION CHANGERS
These change the direction of your snake to the direction shown by the
arrow. Direction changers can be useful or a nuisance, depending on how they
are placed.
BONUS BUMP
This increases your score, but unlike the other bonuses, it does not
disappear after you run over it. You can use the bonus bump as many times as
you like.
SHRINK BUMP
The shrink bump will decrease the size of your snake like the shrink block
does, but the shrink bump will not disappear. It can be used over and over
again.
WALLS
Ultra Peril Snake cannot go through walls. If you try it, or do it by
mistake, then you will die. Ultra Peril Snake is not some dumb plumber which
just ploughs through walls.
ULTRA PERIL SNAKE
Don't run into your own body in this game. It will kill you. It's like
trying to eat yourself.
SPEED
Each level can run at one of four speeds: Fast, normal, slow and really
slow. The speed that each level runs at is shown on the information screen
before you play the level. The speeds are based on the computer's real time
timer, and should be the same on all computers, be they 586s or 286s. (8086s
are a bit slower.)
APPEARING OBJECTS
Every so often, different objects may appear. These are mainly bonuses,
shrink blocks, extra lives and the like. There may be some levels where the
idea is to not complete the level, but to stay on the level as long as possible
to collect the bonuses.
FOOD REQUIRED
A certain amount of food must be eaten before you can go onto the next
level. The required amount of food is shown on the Level Information screen and
during the game at the bottom of the screen. When playing the game, there is
also a bar chart which shows you how close you are to finishing the level.
PASSWORDS
After some levels, you may be given a password. You can use this password
to return to the same level at another time. To enter a password, press F2 on
the menu and type the eight character password.
HIGH SCORES
If your score is good enough, then you will be entered into the high scores
table. You will be entered after you lose all of your lives or complete the
game. The high scores can be displayed from the menu by pressing F7. Note that
only the levels provided by Digital Sheep will allow you to enter your name into
the high scores table. Levels created in the Level Editor will not allow this
to happen.
CARTOONS
Cartoons are shown at the beginning and ending of the game. To skip them,
press a key while they are playing. Note that it may take some time for the
computer to react to your request. Be patient!
There are no cartoons for levels created in the Level Editor.
CONFIGURATION
The configuration screen is available from the main menu. Press F3.
There are instructions on the use of the configuration screen displayed at
the bottom of the screen.
Use the configuration screen to choose different keys for the game or turn
the sound/fading on or off.
ABOUT THE INTERFACE...
Parts of the Ultra Peril Snake program are based around a standard
interface. In this interface, you use objects like buttons to carry out
different actions.
Buttons
This is a button. To carry out the action written on it, you can
(1) Press the F-Key shown in red.
(2) Type the Red letter shown in the name of the button
(3) Use the arrows to select the button in a blue or red box (depending on the
type of button) and press ENTER.
Press RIGHT ARROW to continue...
Selection Rectangles
Selection rectangles highlight the currently active buttons, text fields,
etc. Any actions you take with the keyboard will affect the selected object.
The red rectangle highlights the currently selected section. To change
between sections, the TAB key is used. If there are different parts in the
section, then there will be a blue rectangle as well. To move the blue rectangle
around, the arrow keys are used.
Dialogs
Dialog boxes appear with important information, when confirmation is
required, or when other information is needed. They always contain buttons and
sometimes have text fields. To make a dialog box go away, ENTER and ESC are
used. ENTER normally says YES to any confirmation and ESC says NO.
LEVEL NUKEING
If you're playing the game and you think you're going to die, then press
ESC. You die, but you don't lose a life. This is called Nukeing.
WRAPAROUND SNAKE
The play area in the game is wrapped around. This means that if you go off
the screen to the left, the snake will appear on the right.
QUITTING
True Ultra Peril Snake players never quit, but if your boss wants you to
start wasting your time on paperwork instead, then it is time to quit. Here's
how we think you should get out in the middle of the game:
(1) - Press ESC to nuke the level.
(2) - Press ESC on the level description screen to end the game.
(3) - Confirm that you want to end the game.
(4) - Go through all the highscores screens and all that rot.
(5) - Press ESC on the menu screen.
Alternatively, you could try the patented Beau Chesluk method:
(1) - Hold down CTRL and repeatedly hammer the BREAK key (also labelled
PAUSE) until you get into DOS.
...but it might not be as safe as the five step method shown above, although
that doesn't stop us from using it all the time.
