Here are some additional notes and random jottings..
Note that the TIME setting is the target time-per-move averaged over the
whole of the game - sometimes it can take more or less time, but FLIP-IT
will then compensate later. In particular FLIP-IT can take over twice the
alloted time when just in 'sight' of to the end of the game - however
moves right at the end are very fast, so you should find the overall
average is correct. Note that the target time for the current
move is displayed in brackets after the SEC: counter, and on the line
below the total time and moves taken by the computer is displayed.
FLIP-IT's depth of search is set by its IQ rating, which in turn is
controlled by the time-per-move setting (unless set to zero). The IQ
averages out to about 9 points per ply (or move) of search depth, and is
controlled by the time setting by a method called ITERATIVE DEEPENING.
With this method, the computer starts of searching with a small IQ depth,
and then tries again at deeper depths until it runs out of time.
If you are not an expert player you may find FLIP too strong to beat
on a fast PC, even on 1 second a move! So, to get easier levels of play,
set the TIME setting to zero - the computer will then be set up for
a search of IQ=10, a sort of beginners level. If you want to go a little
higher, hit the F4 key to increase the IQ - levels upto 30 are usually
instant-response.
The numbers given after the move are the computers evaluation of that
move - positive is good for white, negative is good for black. When the
score reaches +/-20000, the computer is seeing a FORCED win to the end of
the game - positive for a forced white win, negative for black win. The
amount by which it exceeds 20000 indicates the scale of the victory - ie.
+20034 means white can win by a margin of 34 disks with perfect play.
The disk-score may be inaccurate at the fringe - ie. if it can only just
see the win/loss.
Just how good is FLIP-IT? Well, tests indicate that when running on
a fast PC, it could arguably be rated with the top dozen or so of the
worlds best human OTHELLO players! And PC's get faster all the time...
HELP SCREENS and COMMAND SUMMARYS.

REVERSI is traditionally played on a 8 by 8 board, with square
A1 at top left and H8 at bottom right - with FLIP-IT you may alter
the board size. Your object is to capture your opponents pieces by
`sandwiching` them in a diagonal, horizontal or vertical line. So
if you have a piece on C5 and I have one on C4 you can move C3,
capturing mine on C4. This is easier to see than describe, so have
a go - you can view possible moves with F1, or even hit F3 for
an automatic demo. Note that a move is only legal if it captures
pieces - you cannot just move to any old vacant square. If you have
no moves at all, you must PASS a go, by hitting F1. When neither
side can move, the game is over and the biggest score wins. (unless
you selected play-to-lose!)
HINT - Try to occupy the corner squares, and keep your mobility
high - also try to keep your score LOW early on in the game.
Remember that territory changes hands very rapidly in OTHELLO, so
your ultimate aim is to occupy STABLE corner squares, and then the
territory outwards from a secure corner you occupy.
When playing, move your cursor by using the numbers around the
5' on the numeric keypad and hit RETURN to place your piece.
Other commands DURING PLAY:-
ESC - Abort back to main menu. (May take a little time..)
-,+ - Alter average response time in secs.
F1 - Show moves, or PASS if none.
F2 - Make me take your go.
F3 - Auto-play. (ESC ends)
F5 - Toggle Two-player/setup mode on/off.
F9 - Cursor off/on.
F10 - More help/info..
CTRL-B - Toggle computers BEST LINE OF THOUGHT display on/off.
(Note this doesn't show the very last 4 moves of a game)
CTRL-F - Force a move early. (May take a little time..)
u - Undo a move- hit twice to get back to your last move.
v - Load a game-file off disk then replay.
ADDITIONAL COMMANDS ON FULL VERSION..
F4 - Change IQ (Only used if TIME is zero)
p - Pass a move, without any comp response.
s,l - Save/Load game to disk. Enter a filename when prompted.
o - Output game moves to screen/printer.
r - Replay game.
v - Load game-file off disk, then replay.
c - Change/Enter Game-comment text.
e,k,w,b - Set current square to empty/killed/white/black piece.
x - Exchange side to play.
SHAREWARE VERSION USERS - NOTE :-
This version of FLIP-IT is released as shareware. You may distribute
it as long as you don't charge more than a small disk-copying fee for it,
or alter it in any way.
