1. Copyrights and distribution.
Multi Device Copier is FREEWARE, what means that can be copied freely.
More - any price of the program is wrong, except zero. Of course I don't
think of standard copy fee, or mail costs etc.
AUTHOR OF THE PROGRAM IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES CAUSED BY PROGRAM
IN SUBSEQUENT TO WRONG USE, OR UNKNOWN BUGS.
2. What is it?
I think, the name of the program tells you something about itself :^ MDC
is a program, which copies disks in three formats - trackdisk (80 tracks),
diskspare (80, or 82 tracks), mfm (80 tracks). Known to me programs cannot
copy disks in last 2 formats and for me it's very uncomfortable. I always
got to copy pc disks by files. It was very slow, boring... The best way to
copy such a disks is to use MDC.
BTW: I know, that programmes which can copy non-standard disks, as
NibbleCopy, or XCopy are. But I think, they are non system friendly,
uncomfortable, slow. MDC was made on base of Super Duper - the best disk
copy program on AAmiga (IMHO). It's full system friendly (works in a small
window), is rather reliable (but... please read the doc about the bugs!)
and has a very nice user interface. Unfortunatelly MDC is much slower then
SD (SD uses unique - super fast drivers for floppy), but I think this
program is not to "kick out" SD, but to cooperate with it! SD+MDC is a
very powerful system (but wait for MDC to be finished :)
WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!
The version 0.95 of the MDC is not really finnished yet. there MAY appear
some unknown to me bugs. Besides, there is no important options, like
HD-buffer, what make this program not really usable yet :( The 2.0 version
will be totaly rewritten, and have many VERY useful options. Please read
the "Future" chapter about future plans.
3. Instructions.
You can run program from CLI, or just by clicking on it's icon. If you run
it from WB, you can set some very useful tooltypes:
PUBSCREEN - Name of the public screen, where MDC has to open its
window. If this screen doesn't exists, MDC will open on
the WB
VERIFY=ON|OFF - sets the "verify" option
DS82=ON|OFF - sets the "ds82" option
FORMAT=ON|OFF - sets the "format" option
DEVICE=diskspare|trackdisk|mfm - sets the default position of the "device"
gagdget
Program opens a small window, which is a little similar to SD3.0 window
(really a little :) You can find here some gadgets: (underlined are
letters, which are shortcutes)
- Verify
^
Turns verification on/off. Verify gives you safty of the data, but makes
the write process much slower.
- ds82
Diskspare.device has a 2 formats - 80 tracks and 82 tracks. Here you can
choose, how many tracks want to use.
- Format
^
Turns the preformat process on/off. If you want to copy msdos disk to eg.
Amiga disk you should use this option, or some errors occure. In other
situations it's not neccessary, because format makes the copy process much
slower.
- Device
Here you can choose a device, which will be used for copy process. You
should use proper formats for disks.
- Read
^
Starts the read process. Now, the tracks are moving to memory. The process
stops, when the last track is reached, or there is no memory. In the
second case do, what you did in SD - write the buffer to disk, put the
source disk in a floppy, and once again click on read. Do it as many
times, as the process indicator will fill all the box. Warning! The readed
track on the process indicator is filled in blue. If there is other color,
this means that some error occured and the data on that track is
corrupted!!!
- Format
^
Formats the disk in a choosen format. The disk to format must be in a
destination drive. Note: program doesn't write a rootblock of the disk. To
use the disk from system, you have to quick format it eg. by File Master.
- Stop
^
Stops ANY operation. If there is no operation to stop, the current buffer
is cleared.
- Write
^
Writes the memory buffer to destination disk.
- Copy
^
Works only with 2 disk drives. You can use this option to copy the disk
with use of 2 drives and minimum use of memory buffer. IMPORTANT NOTE:
This option is a worst tested one in MDC! That's because I have no
external disk srive, and I cannot test it. My friends from other cities
did it, and I tried to fix some bugs. But I'm still NOT sure, does the
copy option works well or not.
- Info
Some notes about program.
- Src/Dest
You can select the source and destination drive. If you have only one
drive, just select df0: on two sides (just like in SD).
4. Requirements and some other stuff.
You should have OS 2.0 or higher. Only OS 3.0 gives you a full gadget
hiding in MDC! Memory expansion is not needed. Program will run even on
512kb an should work with this properly. MDC doesn't use any external
libraries, or files. Was tested on these machines:
Amiga CDTV, 3MB RAM, KS3.0 (earlier versions of MDC)
Amiga 1200, 2MB RAM, KS3.0, 1GB HDD (only the last version)
Amiga 1200, 030/28Mhz, 10MB RAM, KS 3.0, 1GB HDD (getting bigger:)
Machines of Blabla members (from A500 to very expanded A1200)
Also Enforcer was used (of course only on the last machine).
MDC was made in Amiga E 3.2a compiler. the source with comments has a 34
kb and 1439 lines. The compiled code is only about 20 kb long, but after
imploding it should be much shorter.
5. Error messages.
- You didn't select any source drive!
- You didn't select any destination drive!
- No disk in drive!
- Disk [in drive] is write-protected!
I think this messages are well known to you, and you understand what doues
they mean.
- Buffer is incorrect for that drive!
You want to save eg. a dspare buffer with mfm.device. It's of course not
possible.
- No memory for buffer!
You are really short of memory. The program tries to reserve some small
buffers for track, format, or write process. You should fresh some memory
(try Avail flush or sth.) and try once again. I'll try to fix this problem
in a future versions.
- You selected same drive!
Only in copy process. You cannot copy from/to the same disk
- Cannot create request!
You really should buy a Blizzard, or M-Tec with a bigger SIMM :)
- Cannot open this device!
You have not installed a needed device (mfm, or diskspare). Get it on
Aminet and install it to DEVS: NOW!
- other
Other error messages may appear, when executing. About gadgets, or
memory. Check it out :)
6. What in the future?
MDC in this version IS NOT CURRENTLY FINISHED! This is a preview version
of a real MDC, which will have many, many useful options and will be
really reliable. This is a list of some new ideas:
- support of HD disks
- HD buffer
- XPK compression
- Better interface
- better system friendship (eg. sleep)
- Arexx
- localization
- better service of a bad tracks
- better format (also quick)
- MUI
- other (help me!)
7. History.
version 0.95BETA 8.96 o The first version realised. NOT FINISHED
IN 100%!
8. What the Blabla is?
BlaBla is a Polish biggest system programmers group. We make the
system friendly programms. We guarantee that our programs will run on
almost every machine (Amiga of course), including future ones. All our
programs are running in multitasking, and all of them are PD, Freeware, or
Shareware.
Our organisation has a few members (we "absorb" only good
programmers), an own e-mail address and own BBS. Our newest productions
you can find in our PD library called "Polware". Our texts, articles you
can also find in our disk-mag "Izviestia" (sorry, in Polish!).
BlaBla group is well-known in Poland, and programs signed with
"Blabla" are for sure very good. We made many productions, we help many
young programmers, we write articles to Polish edition of Amiga Magazine,
we try to do all, for our beloved computer - Amiga!
