Specialized Database
.short
Aminet/FishDisk/CD-ROM/etc. Catalog Tool
.description
KingFisher is a special purpose database system using client-server
technology to provide you with simultaneous access to multiple databases.
These databases may be maintained for Fred Fish's "Fisk Disk Library", the
FreshFish/FrozenFish/GoldFish CD-ROMs, the global Aminet ftp network, your
Users Group disk collection, etc.\n
Databases can be split into an arbitrary number of "chunks," each of which
may reside on a separate disk volume to be mounted on demand. Records in
the database may be linked intelligently by the software's version numbers
to make it easy to locate the most recent release, follow the development
progress of various releases, or locate equivalently named software
rapidly. Database handling has been optimized for simultaneous multi-user
access, with access arbitration, locking, and file-sharing part of the
design.\n
Powerful search expressions enable you to specify what software you are (or
are not) looking for. Any number of these expressions are maintained in a
history list of nearly arbitrary size to reduce the need to retype commonly
used search expressions. The results of a search can be saved to a file to
make the previously obtained search results available without the need to
perform the search again.\n
Two major client interfaces to the server are provided in this package; both
start the server software automatically if it is not running (perhaps already
serving other clients):\n
1. KingFisher\N
\>The Graphic User Interface (GUI) to the server\N
\t*\>A fully resizable Graphic User Interface (GUI) based on GadTools,\N
\t*\>Opens on the default public or any other screen that is available through
the Display Database,\N
\t*\>Honors your system default (proportional) font and allows selection of
any other fixed or resizable font for menus, buttons and windows,\N
\t*\>Gadget images will adjust to 1:1 and 1:1.6 display aspect ratios
automagically and can be replaced with your own image files if you are running
Kickstart 3.0 or later,\N
\t*\>The clipboard is supported for importing and exporting data,\N
\t*\>Presentation (layout) of database records may be customized separately
for every database and separately for the display, printer, and for export
purposes,\N
\t*\>Comprehensive AmigaGuide® on-line documentation provides context sensitive
help (point at gadget/menu item and press HELP) with nearly 350 hypertext links
to related topics.\n
2. RexxFisher\N
\>The ARexx interfae to the server,\N
\t*\>Each RexxFisher client consumes about 35K memory,\N
\t*\>RexxFisher supports 17 commands (most have numerous options)\N
\t*\>Multiple RexxFisher clients may be started, each with a specific port name,\N
\t*\>Demonstration scripts are included.\n
Registered users have access to technical support, bug fixes, notification
of new releases, a completely unrestricted KingFisher, as well as access to
a KingFisher Developer Kit, which includes sources and examples to help
create new client software or add an interface to the KFServer to your
existing software! Registered users may upgrade to the latest version for
$5(US) (or DM10 from the European registration site.)

.restrictions
Unregistered copies of KingFisher are limited to two (2) simultaneous
connections to the server. This allows you to evaluate and use the software
without significant restrictions (i.e. unregistered copies are limited but
not crippled.)\n
.requirements
Kickstart V37 (2.04) or later (KS36 is NOT supported!) 350K free RAM,
more for large (or many) databases. Kickstart 3 is recommended (for much
improved AmigaGuide® and other features) but not required.
