CD32 - Disk Saver V1.2
by Christian Gines
What do I need?
All you need is a CD32 plus a disk drive or hard drive. It might also
work with an A1200/A4000 with a CD32 compatible CD ROM drive (e.g.
Zappo or Overdrive CD), does anybody know?
What is it?
Well, instead of using that small 1K of nonvolatile RAM of your CD32,
use over 800K of one (empty) disk! So you can keep all saved games on
disk without losing any of them! All you have to is the following:
insert this disk and the game CD time and then (re-)boot/reset. After
this the game will use the disk to save on. The save games can then be
found in the drawer called "NonVolatile".
New in version 1.1 is the possibility of booting games that do not
work with Fast Mem (for expample "Chaos Engine"). I have put the
brilliant tool called "Degrader" by Chris Hames on this disk which
will disable Fast Mem if you want to run such a game. At the end of
the manual there is a list of the games which this boot disk already
recognizes. If you know other games that do not work with Fast Mem
please tell me the titles AND (!!!) the correct disk names (e.g.
"Chaos_Engine:") so I can include them.
Furthermore this disk detects the game "Der_Clou!" where you can only
save your games in RAM. With my boot disk you can save the games in
the (empty) drawer called "ClouSave". If you want to save it in
another path, please edit the file "s/Clou.Startup". I do not know if
the game is called "Der Clou!" in other countries. If not so, please
tell me the name and the disk name (e.g. "DER_CLOU:") so I can include
this version. If you boot the game with this disk for the first time,
it takes some time because some files have to be copied to the disk
first.
Note that the Disk Saver can also boot those excellent CDs by "Amiga
CD32 Gamer". If you have to press and hold a special button, do so
after the title screen of the Disk Saver (not after the reset).
Unfortunately the demo version of "Cannon Fodder" by Virgin Software
does not use the disk to save. The CD of issue 7 is also working with
the Disk Saver, except for the demo of "Beneath a Steel Sky".
Please do not use CD32 Disk Saver for "Arcade Pool" by Team 17 as the
save option may overwrite important data on the disk! Please insert a
blank disk if you want to save.
What if I want to another drive (e.g. my hard disk)?
If you have one, just edit the file called "nv_location" in the drawer
Prefs/Env-Archive/Sys/ consisting of just one line: You have to type
in the full path of the directory in which the games should be saved.
For example:
DH1:Games/Save/
I have tested my little tool successfully on the following CDs (test
computer was: CD32,SX1,4 MB Fastmem,DD disk drive, hard disk):
-Arcade Pool (by Team 17)
*Brian the Lion (by Psygnosis)
-Bubba `n` Stix (by Core Design)
-CD32 Gamer vol.1-6 (by Paragon Publishing)
-Defender of the Crown 2 (by Commodore)
*Der Clou! (by Neo)
*Hero Quest 2 (by Gremlin)
*Lamborghini American
Challenge (by Titus)
*Litil Divil (by Gremlin)
*Microcosm (by Psygnosis)
*Pinball Fantasies (by 21st Century Entertainment)
*Pirates! Gold (by MicroProse)
*Simon the Sorcerer (by Adventure Soft)
*The Chaos Engine (by The Bitmap Brothers)
-Tower Assault (by Team 17)
*UFO (by Microprose)
These CDs run with CD32 Disk Saver. The tool is used by the CDs marked
with "*".
I have chosen the colour black for the background because in some
games like "Simon the Sorcerer" or "Pirates! Gold" one can see part of
the background of the Workbench screen.
DO NOT WRITE-PROTECT THIS DISK!!! OTHERWISE YOU CANNOT SAVE!!!
