I) Introduction
===========================================================================
driving through the streets, you come out a fast turn, you slide through
it as the other drivers try to overtake you, you come out of the turn
ok, but a dirt road comes up , you steer hard left and brake, and then
hard right, you come over a hill , and your car goes flying, you hold
your breath and land, still in first , around the corner is the finish line
and the crowd ready to cheer, the 2nd place car comes up fast, its
neck and neck you barely pull ahead, but he catches up.........
(fictional content - not on game!)
MUSIC BLARING - CARS SLIDING -
SEGA rally begins.....
------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: if you watch the intro long enough, without anyone playing,
it will show you the top 16 times for the championship race, and
it will cycle through some music, some credits, and then it will
show all three courses from various angles, as both cars going
racing around it, you can almost get an idea of what the turns
will be from them.
NOTE : from here on out i will use rally, or Sega rally , instead of
the full title : Sega Rally Championship 1995 (VS) INTL. (SRC 1995 VS)
Rally Racing - A brief Introduction
==========================================================================
Rally racing is a type of cross country racing. It is done
in such a way that there are teams of drivers and cars on
the pathways. The cars do not race against each other at
the same time. They are timed as the reach certain checkpoints.
The "Announcer" is the co-driver/navigator. At an international level, the
teams will go out onto the stages around a fortnight before the rally and
recce the stage in a convoy travelling at about 20-25 mph, BUT not all the
teams can afford to do this so the rally organisers make pace notes
available. These notes are usually of a *very* cautious nature and
this is where the "HARD RIGHT MAYBE"s come into it, one driver's
HARD may be another's flat out pedal to the metal. There are also
some rallys where the teams just get a map and have to make their
pace notes from that!
...so with S.RALLY it's as if they've got the organisers pace notes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
II) Various questions
(a)
Q: What is it ?
A: Sega rally is the 3rd or (whatever you want) in a series of high
performance racing/driving sims that incorporates mind numbing texture
mapping and polygon technology. (This is through the version 2 motherboard
that was used in Daytona, however i think this was a beefed up version).
basically rally is based on european rally racing, which is driving on
streets through cities, forests and unpaved roads, so there ARE hills
and bumps!!
(b)
q: how is it?
a: there are many different issues which will be addressed shortly.
-overall the impression is very good, it is not the quantum leap that
was made from virtua racing to daytona, but is yet another step
beyond daytona!
-if you have never seen the prior games, be prepared for some
major eye-candy, this game is probably one of the most
realistic visual driving games yet..
(c)
q: music?
a: well done, doesn't drone on like daaaaytonaaaa!
different for each of the three courses, no hidden ones yet?
slightly upbeat, not quite techno music. lyrics, sorry wasn't
paying attention, but i know that in the intro they say
rrrrrraaaaaaallllyyyy.
-there are two stereo speakers to the left and right of the monitor,
two small tweeters are also on the front panel.
Song Titles - (but i don't which tracks they go with!)
-------------------------------------------------------
1. Getting muddy
2. Power games
3. Judgement
4. End Road at Monaca
5. Ignition
6. Around Letter(?)
7. My dear friend Larry
-if the volume is too loud ask the operator to turn it DOWN, since
you will eventually get a headache if you play it too long, if you
can't hear it, ask them to turn it up, so at least you can hear
the annoying announcer...
(d)
q: ranking out 10 point scale? ( compared to other sega games)
a: speed/graphics : 9.5 (nothing is 10 yet)
gameplay : 8.0 (9 is daytona,7 is virtua racing)
difficulty : 7.0 (9 is daytona, 8 is virtua racing)
handling : 8.5 (9 is virtua racing, 7 is daytona)
overall : 8.25 /10
-my impressions of course!
-i don't know where ridge racer, and ace driver would go on the scale
because those are from namco(c).
(e)
q: speed of graphics?
a: yes, the graphics refresh rate, and frame rate is higher than daytona,
(possibly 60fps?) and even ridge racer and ace driver. there are NO popup
problems thati could detect, but could that be due to sega creating
courses with all kinds of turns to hide the redraws? remember sega is
already working on the saturn conversion!
[ authors note : saturn conversion done as of 11/25/95 ]
-your field of view in the car, is about the same as daytona , and the
above/behind view also has a similar field of view.
-plenty of anti-aliasing on the road textures, and plenty of different
ones, in fact, from the in-car view the lower 1/8 of the screen
is also blurred and anti-aliased to create a new texture.
-the road has various random patches like real ones, and not
the generic randomized nascar roads.
-plenty of polygon people , animals, and other objects too numerous
to mention.
-you can see through the windows of other cars (transparent windows)
and see the other drivers!!!!!!!!! or even other cars...
(ee)
bugs bugs bugs - in two player , there was plenty of polygon dropout
when the cars were close together.. ie. they were behind you, and you
are in behind the car mode - come on Sega can't you get that fixed yet????
- lots of random dot color mismatches on road textures, ie. blue dots
all over the easy road in the dirt
- polygon dropout when computer cars are near you, not just the second
player
- loss of synchronization of voice and music at various times
- i saw the helicopter carry away a car at the end of the
easy course on the 2nd lap? (has any else seen this?)
- major, and severe graphics clipping of car, and wall/side
objects on all courses (when seen from outside view)..
just drive real close to an edge or wall , and you will
appear to go through it. (VERY VERY BAD and NOTICEABLE!!!)
- [on the whole an exceptional glitch free job. (well almost.)]
<statement rescinded>
- now i think they were trying to do a good job, at most of
these elements don't affect the game, so i rescind the
prior statement, and claim they did a fairly glitch free job.
(f)
q: speed and types of cars?
a: remember these are rally cars, there are 4 kinds , 2 manual , and
2 automatic. The basic cars are celica and the lancia.
the celica has a high spoiler on the tail, and the lancia is smaller lighter
car with a small spoiler on the rear top, much more on the cars later.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) manual vs automatic
automatic - easy to drive, no shifting, slower acceleration coming
out of turns, average handling if you know how to brake
in conjuntion with accelerating ,don't know about top speed
manual - harder to drive, shifting, faster acceleration coming out
of turns, better handling, should have a slightly higher
top speed (at least in manual mode)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) toyota vs lancia
-toyota handles better (period)
-lancia probably accelerates more quickly and has higher speeds
(unconfirmed- reports say that both have the same top speed)!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(g)
q: settings?
a: the default arcade settings are japanese for country/text : set to
export/US car difficulty-normal time difficulty - normal credits - 1per
coin currently you can expect to pay $1 for each game or 4 coins.
according to the operators manual, there are more than 20 settings for
all the different coin slot, count etc.etc...
course settings - short, normal, long , and longest(unconfirmed)
setting course name #laps
______________________________________________________________

mountain 1

(lakeside) 1?

championship 3 - 1 each
(lakeside) 1?
longest desert 5

championship 15 - 5 each
(lakeside) 1?
(h)
q: head to head?
a: yes or solo, they had a linked version at that arcade in baybrook, so
i figure just like the other head to head games, you can link up to eight,
with a main master cabinet and several slave ones.
(i)
q: number of courses?
a: 3 , desert (easy!), forest (medium!), and mountain (expert!).
much more on each one later.
There is also a course called lakeside, but you have to finish
the championship mode to play it, so far its seems like its
only one lap. (no confirmation on other modes, or if you can
select it as a practice course)
(j)
q: modes of play?
a: championship and practice. championship is the one where you race
against , i think , 16 other cars to finish one lap of each course.
practice lets you practice against other cars, and the time to finish a
few laps of each course.
k)
q: could you be more specific on the laps?
a:
practice laps diff start mode
---------- --- ----- ---------------
desert - 3 (easy) standing start
forest - 2 (medium) standing start
mountain - 2 (expert) standing start
lakeside - 1? (very hard) standing start
championship laps
------------------
desert - 1
forest - 1
mountain - 1
------------------
total - 3 all standing starts
or 4 if you include lakeside (1).
(l)
q: controls?
a: standard steering wheel with feedback, 4 gear shift a la daytona,
(not butterfly) - but like a real car
-standard metal gas and brake, adjustable sit down seats (no cushions!)
-one release latch to the lower right on the front of the seat,
-one start button (on left hand side) and only ONE view button to its right
-fake control panel with 3 gauges(water, temp, and rpm)
and various fake switches
-no clutch!!!!!
(m)
q: operation?
a: put the money in, the computer waits to see if another player wants
to get in, (you wait 10 seconds). if no one enters you have the
choice of championship or practice. then you pick one of the four
cars (2 manual , 2 auto) with the steering wheel, pick by either pressing
start or pressing the gas pedal. the game starts and you are presented
with an in car view.each race starts from a standing start.
-the whole idea is to race a set number of laps for each course, and
finish them in the allocated time, you have a certain amount of
time at the beginning, and in each course there are certain
checkpoints that add to the amount of time you can get,
usually if you crash once, you might finish the course, but only
if its a minor one, and you drive a near perfect set of laps after that.
-if you are playing head to head, you can try to beat the other person,
and the clock also, if you are behind, and the other person is
finishing the course you still get to continue as long as they
are making it to the checkpoints...
-i think the first person decides the course, and if you pick different
ones, the lower one wins out (beginner over moderate)
-there is no time lap mode i think, or i don't know how to activate it
yet??????
(n)
q: do you have to wait to jump in?
a: no , you can start even if the other player hasn't finished yet.
(o)
q: onscreen details?
a: here are the various indicators.
speed and rpm
--------------------------------------------------------------------
there is a digital speedometer with tiny white numbers
and rpm meter (tachometer) with gear number on the
lower left of the screen (the instrumentation is translucent so you
can see the road through it) it splits from black to red around the
7500rpm mark it goes to 9000 rpm.it starts at 0 and has markings
for each 2000 rpm,it goes 0,4,6,7,8,9.
rearview and progress
---------------------------------------------------------------------
if you driving in default hood/in car view the rearview mirror is 3/4
the width and 1/8 screen down from the top of the screen it is about
1/16 the height of the screen (maybe smaller ). above that is a bar
chart indicator in green, that is almost as wide, which gives an
indication of how much of the course (lap) you have finished,
this is not very helpful because you shouldn't be looking at
it anyway or you will crash!
maps
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(this is in two player mode)
there is a map on the right hand side, with position indicators.
your position in the race is on the top right hand side.
the dots on the map, correspond to your car , there is a red
one and a green one (head-to-head) with a number inside the
dot
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(this is in practice mode)
time indicators
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-slightly lower than the time on the upper right is the 3 top lap times for the
course.
on the upper left is your cumulative and single lap times.
-on the upper right is your position ?/2 for practice and
?/15 for championship, the lap indicator is to the left of
the lap time
-i didn't see a best lap time indicator or in the credits a place
for the best lap time.[there are none]
-when you finish a course, it shows you each lap time, and your
overall lap time for the course.
-each individual game holds its own high scores, so times and
intials on one side are not reflected on the other side.
(p)
q: cars again?
a: ok you have two basic white cars, the toyota celica and the lancia delta hf.
both are coved in plenty of decals, and have tinted windows
(from the exterior view)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
the celica has a large spoiler on the tail, and the lancia has a small
short attached one to the roof.

Standard racing?

the same information is one the seat to the left
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
handling
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-the celica hugs the road to a greater degree, the lancia takes off, even
on small easy to do turns, and flys over bumps.(This may be due to
their modeling of the cars weight!) [no specs on car in game]
-the celica has a little more gripping action when you brake (or is that
me???) [ once again could be due to modeling factors]
car number
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-if you are player one, your car has a one on it, if you are player two
it has two on it, i assume that when there are more players,
they have their number on it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-whatever all of this is mostly subjective anyway, how are you supposed
to quantitatively describe these attributes without comparisons
anyway????
(q)
q: be specific about the views.
a: THERE ARE ONLY TWO KNOWN VIEWS!!!!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) the in car on the hood/in car hybrid view, this is similar to the hood
view (view 1) of daytona, with one major exception, you have a rear
view mirror! (Realtime of course).
- after playing the game with this view, the rear view mirror has really
limited use, it gives you an idea of where the cars are behind you,
but what really would have helped is side mirrors!! so you can
see when someone is trying to pass you, and from which side.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) the above and behind view (my favorite) view 3 in daytona. NO REAR
VIEW MIRROR THOUGH.
-this view gives you the advantage you can see your car and its relation
to the road
-you can judge the upcoming turns and see which direction
your wheels are facing (important turn information)
-you can also the distance and relation of other cars in reference to your
position smoke, dirt and dust come off the tires and you can see
them in this view
-you also get to see more scenery!
-that's it, right, only 2, no more, why? who knows, maybe sega thinks we
don't need any more, ask them!
( you still get the same view as the first one, but if you select
your car, and hold down both view buttons, you get different
instrument readouts on-screen, see the tricks section below)
(r)
q: what about control?
a: this is probably the one biggest question that will affect whether you
want to play it or not..
-basically the celica (big air fin on back) handles better than the lancia
both cars will turn violently with large degree turns (>10 degrees)
-a very light touch is needed to turn, somewhat like daytona, but a bit
more responsive, the gas and braking handle like daytona, with
large amounts of braking and hard pressure on the gas pedal
giving the equivalent amounts of braking, or speed.
-it will take you a couple of games to get used to this!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
overall - i would rate the car handling in between virtua racing
which was rock solid absolute control and daytona - slide city
-these cars have a good degree of control if you have a delicate
touch and they do slide, but you won't be sliding and slipping
all over the place like in daytona or ridge racer.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
- sorry i can't compare it to other games like outrunners or any
thing else, i just don't play those other games that much..
(s)
q: how hard is the game?
a: well this is a tough question? here goes.
degree of difficulty
--------------------
for the seasoned virtua racing expert -
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
moderate to easy to finish all 3 courses after a few games (i am not kidding)
for the seasoned daytona expert -
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
easy to finish all 3 courses after a few games
(i finished beginner, moderate, and almost finished
expert, and championship after the first $7)
for the new racing car person -
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
impossible to very hard
(they are going to have to spend loads of dough to even finish the
beginning course)
for the moderate racing car persion -
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
hard to moderate
( they wont have to spend as much >us$20 ) to get past beginner
and maybe moderate
ALL OF THIS IS ASSUMING THE GAME IS ON NORMAL/NORMAL DEFAULT
SETTINGS.
-basically if you know how to do power slides, and you will have to do them!,
you will be able to finish the game in all modes rather quickly, and this
is with the AUTOMATIC CAR (THATS WHAT I ALWAYS USE AT FIRST)!!!!!
-dissapointed? well , don't be too much, because sega shortened the game
(notice the number of laps for each course is pretty small) , maybe if you
are lucky you will find an arcade that sets it to a very high amount of
laps!!
(t)
q: why is the game so easy?
a: there are a couple of factors
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
1) the cars are a lot easier to handle
2) turn indicators that show up to show you the severity of the turn
3) VERBAL VOICE ANNOUNCER THAT TELLS YOU THE SEVERITY
OF THE TURN - example, hard right, medium right, easy right, easy left
etc.etc..
(the announcer is really the navigator/co-driver)
-basically you don't have to figure out whats coming, the announcer tells
you ahead of time, and even if you don't hear it, you see a symbol that
pops up to show you how hard the turn is, if it is a very hard turn, instead
of a blue turn symbol, you get a red one.
(u)
q: what about the announcer, and what are those figures?
a: lets see what his vocabulary is and what it means.
( once again, the announcer is the navigator / co-driver)
The figures that appear on the screen are what they call Figure Eights.
Named because there are only eight figures each denoting the turn that is
expected. The voice shouting the turn conditions ahead is not the announcer
but rather the co-driver/navigator. Cross country rallies are a very
complicated mix of driving and navigation. The driver depends on the
navigator to get him around and warn him of the turns that come. Nobody
goes on a rally motorcross by himself. This explains the pose on the
finishing screen. There are 2 "drivers" standing in victory.
vocabulary and turn description
------------------------------------------
a) right or left
b) easy , medium and hard
c) very, long or ( none )
d) maybe (suggestion for turn difficulty)
e) upward jump [i think] <for jumps>
f) hairpin turn [ i think ]
------------------------------------------
-he does say other things that don't really help though
a) ouch
b) oww
c) whoah
examples..
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) easy left - obvious, just barely turn the wheel at full speed
you should be able to make the turn without losing any speed
2) easy right - same as above
3) long easy left - another easy turn, but the turn radius is much longer
than the short one, so don't abruptly turn the wheel
4) long easy right - same as above
5) long easy left (maybe) - you should be able to take this
turn without slowing down, but if you are
slightly off at the apex of the turn
you may need to slow down
6) long easy right (maybe) - same as above
7) very long easy left (maybe) - this turn is one of the longest in the game,
you should not have to slow down entirely if
you complete it just right
8) very long easy right (maybe) - same as above
9) medium left - you will have to brake slightly, or downshift to take this
turn , if you don't you will either hit the sides, or go off
the road
10) medium right - same as above
11) medium left (maybe) - slightly more control needed to take turn, but not
enough for you to power slide into
12) medium right (maybe) - same as above
13) hard left - you will probably have to power slide into this turn, don't
know what a power slide is? read the daytona faq please
14) hard right - same as above
-at some point these will abbreviated like EL,LEL,LMRM, HR
for easy left, long easy left, long medium right maybe, and hard right.
and placed into the course descriptions...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE : This has been done as of version 0.90!
v)
q) any car damage?
a) hmmm.
if you have played this game for awhile, you may noticed a couple
of things, your car never flips over, the other cars don't flip
over either.
and also you can do anything you want to the car, and no damage
appears! good? bad? who knows, maybe sega decided that this
game would be hard enough without having to model the damage,
and remember in rally racing , there aren't pit stops (or are
there?) anyway sega is basically taking the liberty to do
whatever they want with this game, so sit back, drive, and
enjoy it, don't worry too much about the details!

III) Course guide
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE : The manual and automatic information below contain slightly
different descriptions for the turns, the automatic is geared
more towards the beginning driver while the manual is for
the expert driver (however, ALL the courses can be mastered
by both types, i'm just not as good with automatic)
NOTE : the recovery techniques are mine, and the penalty times are
just estimates, if you can crash and still finish the course,
you don't need to know these, these are just basic techniques
that you can use anywhere.
NOTE : For Sega Saturn Owners that are reading this faq.
I have converted km/h to mp/h for the home version
as we do not know a trick to get km/h yet!
Also the times listed below will be slightly slower (and greatly
slower compared to if you use the extra car in the home version)
so DO NOT take these as the best, they apply to the arcade only!
To see more appropriate speeds and times refer to the
Sega Saturn Rally Faq also, and ...
please refer to the Sega Saturn Rally Times Faq for more
appropriate times, thanx.

description
------------------
-seems to me this fictional course exists somewhere in africa possibly?
what do you think?
-the desert course is about as easy as it gets, there are two medium hard
turns and the rest are easy, you should make the first lap in a 1:00+ and
the next 2 in under a minute to finish the course.
-you start off in a small town with a few houses and buildings, the starting
line has a banner over it. you then proceed through various plains, and
dirt and gravel roads, with green hills, and rocky cliffs on the side, at
the end a vast plain with a huge gravel road finishes off the scenery.
visibility is good throughout the course, the turns are wide, and there
are a few hidden corners, but the indicators show you what turns
are approaching.
road conditions
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
you are driving on gravel, and dirt for the whole course, there are no paved
turns. several large bumps exist on the coarse, which you will have to
compensate for, in particular there is one stretch that has 3 bumps in
a row, also some of the harder turns are on dirt , so the car will slide
accordingly, at times into rocky cliffs right next to them, the gravel
is hard to grip and if you power slide into it at the wrong angle, it
will take time to compensate for turning the wheel so that it is parallel
to the steering column, and then you can gain your traction back.
<this is also the final checkpoint - time added ?>
start
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-your car sits at the starting line located in a small town , there are
other cars in front of you, since this is a standing start you should
accelerate quickly to get ahead.
-road conditions : gravel
-you have 3 seconds to get ready before you take control of the car
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
in two player mode - then next car is either to your left or right
multiplayer mode - not known how position of cars are determined
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - press accelerator slowly at first and then press hard after
a few seconds you should be at full speed , about 215km/h
(129 mp/h) continue at that pace.
manual - check to see if gear is in 1st, if not put it there or you will lose
time, accelerate like the automatic, however note your speed, around
70 km/h (42 mp/h) and the tachmoter needle goes to red, shift to 2nd,
around 130km/h (81 mp/h) switch to 3rd, and around 160km/h (99 mph/h)
switch to 4th, drive with one hand on the shift, or bring the hand
back to shift down when needed late on, this should take about 5 seconds
or so, maybe faster, try to optimize your shifting times, you can also
listen to the sound of the engine but it is up to you to decide which
is easier.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: i tried the rocket start (from daytona) but could not tell if it worked
correctly.
[hold down the brake and the accelerator, and jam on both , letting go
of the brake when the countdown timer reaches 0]
(however, some people have gotten it to work)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
introductory turns
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ER, and EL]
there is an easy right turn and an easy left turn as you go past some
grassy plains with zebras on them,
- road condition : gravel
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - take each turn at full speed , you can basically be anywhere
on the road when you take these turns, because you have so much
space to work with, try to turn the wheel gently and don't cause
the car to lose any speed, be prepared to go right afterwards
manual - same as automatic, stay at top speed, prepare to go right, don't
even think about using the brake unless you skid out!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
first plains
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ER]
then another easy right, but if you go to far out you will bump into the
grassy hills on the left side and slow down , you should be going all out
(about 215 kph (140 mp/h) i think) take the turns on the inside so you don't
have to slow down.
- road condition : dirt
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - full speed, try to stay in towards the right, don't brake
manual - same as automatic
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
recovery
--------
if you should hit either the left hills, or the right hand rocks, IMMEADIATELY
tap on the brakes and slow down slightly, the car will swerve, depending
on which way you turned the wheel, and at which angle you came off
the turn, grip the wheel tightly to turn in the opposite direction you
came off, and press the accelerator to go to maximum speed as soon
as possible
penalty
--------
probably a second at the worst, '20 -'40 hundreds at the best
=============================================================================
bump!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ER]
you will come around another easy right turn and hit your first bump, yes
thats right, a bump which will send the car flying upward for a second, you
have no control over the car in the air, so don't apply the brakes, spin
the wheel or anything, otherwise you will crash when you come down!!!! you
will hear the announcer say upward jump and see a yellow exclamation point
sign
road condition : dirt
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - keep going full speed over the bump, i didn't notice if you lose
any speed when you're airborne or not, or whether you gain some
when you land (looks cool though!)
manual - stay in 4th at all times, try to close in the right hand side to set
up for the next turn
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
<2nd checkpoint - time added ?>
first hill
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[LER]
then you round a big dirt hill and their is a long easy turn to the right,
apply just a little brake and slide to the right, you won't slow down much,
and start accelerating right away,
road condition : dirt
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - press on the brakes either by themself, or simultaneously with
the accelerator, slow down to about 180km/h(unconfirmed) (111 mp/h)
until you feel the tires almost starting to lose their grips, this
should happen only for a second or so, once you turn the wheel
a little sharper to the right, accelerate again.
manual - either downshift from 4th to 3rd quickly , turn and shift up again
while jamming on accelerator ,or tap brakes, downshift to 3rd and upshift again, rapidly
accelerating (if you're already not holding down the accelerator)
[late breaking addition : its possible in both modes to take this turn
at full speed, just swing wide to the left and cut inwards, and you
don't have to break or downshift! try it.]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
recovery
--------
once again, if you think you're going to hill the hill, SLOW DOWN!
with the brake, and turn the wheel to the left so you are going
away from it!
penalty
--------
if you don't stop completely , a few more tenths of a second,
otherwise a half second
=============================================================================
bumps and straightaway
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ER]
anyway once you land you are still going fast, there is another
easy right turn that you will have to make
road condition : dirt
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - stay at full speed, either tap the brakes, and accelerate again,
or brake and accelerate simultaneously, once again wait until
the car tires seem to almost lose their grip before doing so
manual - stay in 4th, downshift to 3rd in whatever manor you do, either
by braking and downshifting, or just by downshift, accelerate
rapidly and go to the left as you approach the bumps
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=============================================================================
recovery
---------
if you feel you are losing control as you go over the bumps, there is
a small of time (less than a few tenths of a second) that you can
either slow down, and correct your course for the other turns,
do NOT jam on the brakes or you will CRASH and BURN
penalty
----------
try not lose more than a second, because if you already
crashed, forget about trying to finish all the laps , because you will
be running out of time, if you correct ok, you will either gain or
lose a few tenths of a second.
=============================================================================
out of the dirt
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[EL]
then comes a straightaway, followed by three bumps in a row, fly over all
of these at full speed, and when you come down get ready to make a left.
thats an easy left turn, if you are to close to the hill you will hit it,
and it will slow you down, so try to approach the hills from the left and work
outward.
road condition : dirt
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - whats the mantra? full speed ahead , don't slow down or
brake
manual - full speed ahead, no braking allowed!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
==========================================================================
recovery
-------
if you are slightly too far out, you will graze the right hand wall,
and of course lose some precious speed, don't try to oversteer
if this happens, hit the wall, and continue on
penalty - a few more tenths of a second (these add up!!)
===========================================================================
chicane
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[EL and ER]
as you come out of the turn, the first chicane will come up, you have
an easy left followed by an easy right, make sure you go wide on the
left as there is a wall of dirt on the right and it could slow you down,
make sure you clear the hill easily,
road condition : gravel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - approach the hill from the left and turn slightly outward,
going full speed, this is the interesting thing, because you
don't really have to turn right afterwards, there is a little
grass on the side, but go over it and onto the gravel,
setting you up for the final turn (almost like the final
turn in the beginners course on virtua racing)
manual - full steam ahead!, steer a little left and stay there, you don't
have to turn right, approach the final turn..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
===========================================================================
recovery
---------
if you clip the wall on the right , turn outwards to the left, so that you
won't slow down again, that way you'll be heading as planned into
the final right turn
penalty
---------
a few tenths of a second
============================================================================
final stretch
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[VLERM]
because coming up after that last turn is a very long easy right turn (maybe)
on gravel. go into full speed from the right and cut inward, don't oversteer
or you will spin out
-road condition : gravel
-by the way a helicopter will do a flyby from above and
will kick up all kinds of dust in front of you, after that turn , keep
maintaining full speed and cross the finish line, repeat twice and
finish the beginners course...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - this is the make or break turn for the course, if you do it
right you will have plenty of time to finish the other laps, and
also set some record times, if you skid out, you will be in bad
shape and lose lots of time, take the approach the way you like,
you can go wide to the left, and cut inwards, as you start
braking, note how the car is handling, are the wheels slipping,
check your speed, you should slow down to about 150 kph (93mph) and
once you round the turn, accelerate like crazy again, straighten
the wheel, and cross the finish line, check your lap time, to see
how you do each time
manual - same as above, however you may want to push the speed a
little higher >160 kph (99mph),downshift to 3rd,brake and upshift to
4th again, or just do it by downshifting. you should be able
to get the grip from the gravel slightly sooner, so be prepared
to accelerate as quickly as possible, check your lap time, and
keep in mind how you are doing.
===========================================================================
recovery
-------------
you should not spin out on this turn, because if you do, you
will have to turn the car around and get back up to speed. learn
how to take it properly and you will finish it every time!
penalty
--------
up to a second if you crash, maybe more, you will lose some
time due to the car sliding and slowing down
===========================================================================
[if theres a way to take this at full speed let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ending
------
basically you get a few still shots, with moving camera angles of the
scenery, while the programmers names show up on the screen
1) some elephants walking in the grass
2) some plains and trees
3) some hills and mountains
4) some zebras grazing in the grass
-if your time was fast enough you enter your name
turn the steering wheel to the letter of your initial
and press the gas or the start button to enter,
you get three initials.
-sometime the ending credits do not come up,i don't what
criteria the game is looking for. ( i think you have to beat
the other car?)
g a m e o v e r - oops thats daytona! (c)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
pretty easy, huh? well remember how to do it, because the first lap
of the championship is this one, so if you fly through it , you will
have plenty of time to finish the next one, more on this later.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(b)
The following course description assumes you are playing in practice mode.
For championship , you only have to follow the directions for one lap.
-----------------------------------------------------

2. rg celica(m) /out 1:17'94 / 2:34'84
-this fictional course could exist somewhere in france or germany perhaps?
what do you think?
-the forest course is much harder than the desert one,
most people will eventually learn how to finish it, but there is one killer
u-turn that pretty much separates the good people from the bad, and
also how you take it makes or breaks you from finishing.
-the overall road condition varies widely with long areas of paved roads,
tunnel road, to dirt roads, back to paved roads for the killer u-turn,
back to dirt roads with jumps, back to paved roads for the final turn.
<this is also the final checkpoint - time added ? >
start, miniature s's
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
-in practice mode your car starts on the left hand side of the road
-you have 3 seconds to get ready to start racing
-you start off in a forested area with rocks and tree,
and off to the side grass shoulders,
-you come off a standstill start and do two minature s-turns
at the beginning (going left to right),and then left to right
again
road condition - paved
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - accelerate slowly, do not jam on the gas pedal!, and slowly
exert pressure on the gas, rapidly going to full speed
(about) 215 km/h (140 mp/h)
manual - make sure the gear is 1st! if not place it there, and
get ready to accelerate, once again, start slowly and
around 70km/h (43 mp/h) switch to 2nd, around 140 km/h switch
(87 mp/h) to third and finally around 170 km/h (105mp/h) switch
to 4th. get to top speed as fast as possible, and watch out
for other cars.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
=========================================================================
recovery
--------
1st lap - none needed (you really shouldnt crash here!)
2nd lap - be prepared to gently weave through the s's but if you are
sliding off the road anywhere, you can graze the grass on
the side , and slowly! brake to regain control
be prepared to turn right
penalty
--------
mere fractions of a second
=========================================================================
weave through the woods
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[VLER]
the first long winding easy right turn, and as you go past more trees ,
there is a flock of birds on the road that flies away. there are grass
shoulders onboth sides of the road, but don't go too far into them! or
you will hit the railings.
road condition - paved
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - approach the turn from the right, and genltly steer the wheel
through the turn, while maintaining full speed! your apex for
the turn should not be very high, so you shouldn't have
to brake at all.
manual - same as automatic.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
==========================================================================
recovery
--------
this is an easy turn and you shouldn't need any, but if you
slide off the road, graze the grass and brake! slowly, while
turning the wheel gently to the right.
penalty - still more precious tenths of a second
=========================================================================
still going to the right
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[LERM]
another long winding easy right comes up, you might want to
graze a little grass on the shoulders if you feel you cant take the
next couple of turns at full speed. there are trees on the side, and
on the left a brick fence is coming up.
road condition - paved
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - approach the turn from the right again, still going full
speed, get ready to turn left though, and be prepared to
brake slightly (if needed)
manual - still going full speed, turn gently to the right, and
prepare to turn left
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
========================================================================
recovery
---------
none needed, but once again you may graze the grass on either side if
you feel the need to slow down
penalty
-------
yet even more tenths of a second
========================================================================
left into the tunnel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[VLEL]
then comes a long winding left easy left you can make, there is a slight
shoulder of grass on either side, but it also a brick wall on the left,
you will also go over a small bridge, which you can see on the right
hand side, don't oversteer or you fly right into the side of the mountain.
road condition : paved
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
--------
enter the turn at full speed, and slow down slightly by tapping the brake
as you come up on the left, the wheels of the car might leave the ground
slightly , but you should come back up to full speed as you straighten
out and head into the tunnel.
manual
-------
you have two choices 1) downshift to 3rd (or 2nd) and turn to the left.
2) you can stay in fourth and brake slightly and let the force of the
car carry it through the turn, decide which way you like better, and
which one shaves off the most time. be prepared to recover for the
straightaway that enters the tunnel
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
========================================================================
recovery
--------
this is one of the first small trouble spots for the course, if you slam
into the rock wall on the right, brake and turn the wheel to the left
and quickly accelerate
if you bash into the mouth of the tunnel, start turning and accelerate
again (auto) or back to 1st (manual)
penalty
-------
up to a second if you are not careful! if you crash here, you can
still possibly complete the course.
========================================================================
<1st checkpoint - time added ?>
into the tunnel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ML]
as you end up on the mouth of a tunnel. the rock tunnel has a slight
width differential from the road width, so try to maintain the
middle of the road approach (ha). inside the lit tunnel, are
yellow colored lights, and rock walls on either sides! be careful
not to bang into them. Inside the tunnel, after a few seconds you
will approach a medium left turn, after that prepare for a short
straightaway as you exit the tunnel.
road condition : paved
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
---------
after entering the tunnel maintain full speed, and be prepared to brake
down to about 170 km/h(105 mp/h) and turn the wheel to the left, if you are
going too fast brake even more and compensate, try to take the inside left
as you go into the turn and slide outwards if you need to
manual
-----
simply downshift to 3rd , turn to the left, wait until you feel your
wheels catch on the turn and shift back to 4th, the wheels shouldnt
spin at all if you do this right
[late breaking addition: its also possible to take this turn
at full speed in both modes, simple hug the left side of the
wheel, and turn hard to the left, your tires will sqeal, but
you will still be able to hang onto the turn, this is also
a good spot to overtake other cars that get in your way..try it]
----------------------------------------------------------------------
======================================================================
recovery
--------
if you hit the sides of the tunnel at any times, try to steer yourself
back into the center of the road, and do not oversteer! or else you
will go bouncing off of them left and right. if you hit the inside
or the outside wall on the left turn, brake and slow down appropriately
while maintaining the cars turn, be prepared for a straightaway and
a left turn
penalty
-------
once again a bad crash might lose up to a second
grazing the sides up to half a second
if this is your second crash, forget about finishing the course!
===========================================================================
out of the tunnel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[MLM]
then after finishing that prior straightway, comes a hill and then
comes two major turns, first a medium one to the left. on both sides
of the turn are large dirt walls, so try to cut onto the inside
and slide through the turns
road conditions - briefly paved, and then dirt
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
------
for the sake of argument - i claim this is one of the first major
make or break turns on this course, you will need to power slide
through it big-time (what you don't know how to do one? read the
daytona faq), in other words you will have to do a controlled
brake and accelerate motion through the turn, first slow down
as you approach the turn , then turn to the left and as you
see the wheels starting to slip accelerate again, due to the
poor traction on the road, you will not gain full speed
right away and the car will (should!) swing out to right.
once you straighten up, you should be going full speed
ahead (at least until the next turn) which is a right
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
======================================================================
recovery
--------
if you are sliding into the right hand wall, you must slow and
turn the wheel out away from it, that way when you hit the
wall and accelerate, you will be coming off at the right
angle, and can get back on the road again
penalty
-------
up to one second if its a major crash, otherwise grazing the
wall loses a few tenths of a second
===========================================================================
still mud
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[LMR]
and then a medium right, this turn is almost a mirror of the previous
turn except the turn radius is slightly wider, and you have more
leeway when you come out of it, be prepared for a slight chicane
(s-turn) that you fly right through, but watch out for the cliffs
again!
road condition : dirt during turn, paved at end
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
---------
this turn is like the opposite of the prior one , turn to the inside
of the right turn and let the car slide outwards as you apply
the brake,then quickly accelerate.
you should be able to brake a little less, and still be able to correct
your angle of turning and come out at full speed got the
straightaway.
manual
------
once again two choices, brake while you're in fourth and gun it.
remember that this is not a hard right, so don't oversteer.
or 2) shift to 3rd ,turn slide, and back into fourth for the
straightway.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
=========================================================================
<checkpoint>
the killer mountain top u-turn
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[VHR]
keep going fast because you hit another checkpoint and then comes
the killer u-turn, slow down to about 100km/h (60mp/h) or whatever , just slow
down like crazy and try not to hit the rails on the left or the mountain
on the right , because you will slow down like crazy whether you like
it or not and it will waste a heck of a lot of time. its too bad the
game goes by so fast , because if you look to the left side of the
u-turn you get a spectacular view over a cliff of the mountain side
and the railing! on your right is the solid rock wall, waiting for
you to crash into it, though.
road condition : paved
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
---------
after you cross the checkpoint , begin BRAKING AND TURNING HARD to the
RIGHT! watch the cars reaction, make sure that you haven't turned
the wrong way or too much, if you spin out here, you are in
big trouble! you will need to practice this turn, and be able
to do it right every time, if you want to finish, so practice.
practice. practice.
the car will leave the ground momentarily due to its momentum
but you should be able to recover and gun the gas pedal
if you come out of it ok,
manual
-----
this is another sore spot that needs to be discussed -
there are many different ways to take this turn , i will tell
you my way, since it works for me (and i finished the course)
what i do, is approach the turn in 4th, shift straight to 2nd,
and brake down to about 100 km/h (60 mp/h), i let the car slide if it
isn't doing so already, after the traction is regained i shift
to 3rd, and then 4th quickly, the thing is though a hard right
turn is coming, so be prepared for it.
here is stingray's version:
Well, I don't know if my techniques are any better than yours 'cause
I think that I'm doing them wrong and it's hurt my time as well.
OK, here goes: there are two U-Turn's in the game, so I going through
each accordingly. The U-turn at the forest level, I approach
the turn at 4th near the right side of the paved road then about
a 1 second before the actual turn, I downshift to 3rd and brake
medium-ly (to 100-110 km/h) (60-68mph/h) and turn hard right, gasing all
the way, which usually power-slides me though the turn. (if I don't mess
up that is). I usually do the same stuff for the other U-turn,
except that, I approach at 3rd/4th(depends how I took the previous
turn) from the middle of the paved road, and I brake HARD (to about
90-100 km/h)(56-62mp/h) and downshift to 2nd and turn hard right and then
gasing it all the way back to 3rd then 4th as you come out of the turn.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
======================================================================
recovery
---------
try desperately to recover if you crash, because if you make it through
this without slowing down to much you are very good shape to finish!
after the u-turn go full speed ahead and get ready
penalty
-------
you could lose up to 2 seconds if you really blow it here.
that really is the end of the race if you don't make it through this!
======================================================================
keep on sliding!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[HL]
to take a hard left on dirt road, slide through it, and once
again go full speed, you have rails on your left side, and
mountain on your right.
road condition : dirt
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
---------
slow down and brake, turn the wheel to the right and be prepared to
slide off to the left, you must try to straighten out as soon as
possible to get back on the road, or you will graze the grass
shoulder and slow down even more.
manual
-----
you will need to shift to 3rd , and possibly 2nd if you feel the
car sliding towards the right hand wall too much, turn hard to the left
and let the car slide outwards a little bit, when the tires start
to spin upshift and regain control as you turn the wheel back
to the right. this is also a critical turn
=======================================================================
recovery
--------
you are giving some shoulder room on the side, in case you slide out
to far, try not to lose to much time here, as this is a critical
point near the end of the course, you can make up a little time
if you do it right, but if you crash! watch out.
penalty
-------
up to half a second if its a severe crash
=======================================================================
what? more dirt?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[MR]
a bump, followed by a medium right is next, this turn to the right
is pretty easy to take but don't be fooled and slam into the sides,
since you still have a wall on the left, and the rock mountain
on the right
road condition - dirt
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
---------
this turn to the right should be taken slightly carefully, you don't
need to slow down that much, but tapping the brakes is not enough,
adjust as you turn, and you shouldn't be skidding either.
manual
------
i can take this turn every time without downshifting, but i skid
a lot, the wheels spin, and i do powerslide (read the daytona faq!).
basically turn the wheel to the right, and turn on the inside, let
the car slide outwards and adjust by turning it to the left
slightly, you should be heading into a straightaway.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
==================================================================
recovery
--------
not a whole lot to say here, even if you mess up, you will slide
along the outside wall, so its a very easy turn to recover from
penalty
-------
a few tenths of a second, (but just enough to mess you up)
==================================================================
slippery snake
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ER and EL]
then a chicane with an easy right and an easy left
which turns into a paved road, watch out for the
wall on the left and the mountain on the right.
road condition : dirt
------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
---------
go full speed ahead into this , turn slightly to the right, and
then again slightly to the left, thats it! get ready for the
next right
manual
-----
go full speed, turn slightly to right, and then to the left,
and get ready for another right.
=================================================================
recovery
--------
none needed, as this is a very easy turn, but if you do hit
the walls when you turn , you won't lose much time
penalty
-------
a few tenths more of time
==================================================================
back on the road again
------------------------------------------------------------------------
[LMR]
straighten up after the previous turn an a medium s-turn will
approach you, from here you go into a medium right, and adjust wide,
follow through the turn and as you straighten out and accelerate through
the straightaway and the finish line. watch out for the spectators!
road condition : paved
----------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
---------
brake slightly, and turn to the right, all you have to do is tap
the brakes, so not much is required, remember to straighten
out for the finish line!
manual
------
downshift to 3rd for a moment, turn to the right, and shift back
up quickly, yes, you can also brake, then straighten out for
the final part!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
[late breaking addition: its also possible to take this turn
at full speed in both modes, simple hug the left side of the
wheel, and turn hard to the left, your tires will sqeal, but
you will still be able to hang onto the turn, this is also
a good spot to overtake other cars that get in your way..try it]
=====================================================================
recovery
--------
another fairly easy, but critical turn, brake slightly and you
won't have problems , if you overshoot the turn you will cross
the shoulder and maybe hit the railings, you should have enough
room to manuever back to the road
penalty
-------
a few more precious tenths of a second
=====================================================================
home free!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ER]
then comes an easy right and the finish line banner.watch out for
railings on both sides of the road, and try to finish as you
approach the left (saves a little bit of time)!
road condition : paved
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
---------
full speed ahead, turn to the right gradually, and prepare for
the small s's if this is the first lap
manual
------
full speed ahead, turn to the right gradually, and fly through
the s's if this is the first lap
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
======================================================================
recovery
--------
none needed, plenty of space to move around in , if you get off-track
penalty
-------
none
======================================================================
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-see , that wasnt so bad either. your time should be like 1:17 , do it
one more time at about 1:15 (watch out for the u-turn) and you will
finish it.
-once again remember how to do it for championship because this
is the second lap, try to make it through the killer u-turn because
that will make you or break you for the final lap which is next!!
-i think this is the critical course if you want to come in first
overall in championship, you should place at least 4th, and have
a time of 1:17 or less. if not, you won't make it to lakeside.
-if you do, you will get presented the ending credits of the programmers
as you see still shots (sheesh after all that?!!) and then you get to enter
your name. (i got first of course)...
- enter the initials by turning the wheel to the letter, and press start
or press on the gas pedal to select, hurry cos you only have 25 seconds!
here are the static screen shots
1) various shots of the forest
2) various shots of the outside of the tunnel
3) various shots of the u-turn on the cliff
4) various shots of the last sections of the race
g a m e o v e r - whoops thats daytona again!!!

-i think this fictional course is probably in italy or france?
possibly even england? what do you think?
-this is a spectacular course winding through city buildings, with plenty
of mountains and sides around, this course is very hard because
the roads are so narrow, and once you start bouncing around its
very hard to stop, also there is one killer u-turn again...
after that you go through another city, around some more hard
turns and finish in a small town again
- the road conditions are very stable, they are mostly on paved roads
with some turns that have dirt shoulders. not very hard at all once
you get used to it.
< checkpoint - time added ?>
start - you have 3 seconds before the race starts
---------------------------------------------------------
automatic - prepare to accelerate
manual - get into first gear, and prepare to accelerate
double left in the city
--------------------------------------------------------------------
[EL and EL]
you are in a small town, buildings are on your left and right hand
side, and spectators are all around you, you see a banner above
you, and plenty of banners on the walls to your left and right,
there are a lot of narrow passageways here, but you have enough
room to maneuver around other cars, first comes an easy left turn,
followed by another easy left turn,
road condition : paved
-------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - gently accelerate to top speed , and go to your
outside on the the left, and prepare to gently turn the
wheel as you go through these first two turns at top speed
manual - shift quickly from 1st /2nd/3rd/4th and get to top speed,
you should be able to quickly take the turns without any
skidding and prepare for the next two easy turns
-------------------------------------------------------------------
===================================================================
recovery
--------
if this is your second lap, and you hit the sides, ease
off on the gas, and after getting back to the center of the road,
accelerate back to full speed again
penalty
--------
a few hundreds to a tenth of a second
===================================================================
just leaving
-------------------------------------------------------------------
[ER and EL]
now you are leaving the city, and on your left hand side is a field
with lots of trees, and on your right is a spectacular view of
a castle in a lake. there are fences on both sides of the road
so if you run into them watch out! also the road is still fairly
wide so you should be able to overtake any cars if you really
need to, first comes an easy right , followed by an easy left
road condition : paved
--------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
----------
once again you should be going full speed, and take
both turns without slowing down, prepare for a left turn
manual
-------
same thing, maintain full speed, and take both turns,
prepare to downshift for the next left turn
--------------------------------------------------------------------
====================================================================
recovery - if you bump against the sides, brake slightly and regain
control of the car, and accelerate quickly to regain speed
penalty - a few hundreths to a tenth of a second
====================================================================

the rocky arches
---------------------------------------------------------------------
[ML]
as you come up to the checkpoint, which is right at the entranceway
to a rock arch, a medium left turn comes up, there is rock on
both sides of the arch, and a large rock wall looms on the right
hand side, beyond that is the large body of water
road condition : paved
------------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - brake and simultaneously turn to the left, you can either
brake early , and slide through the top part of the curve and
straighten out as you go left, or if you brake late, then take the
turn at a sharper angle (i'm not sure about the speed - about 120 km/h)
(74 mp/h)
manual - downshift to 3rd and slide through the top part of the turn and
go to about 120 km/h (74 mp/h), as you straighten, shift back up to 4th
as quickly as you possibly can , but get ready to downshift to 3rd
again for the next right
------------------------------------------------------------------------
========================================================================
recovery
--------
you might slam into the rock wall on the right hand side,
so be prepared to counter steer to the left, and slow down
appropriately, get back up to full speed as soon as possible
penalty - up to a few tenths of a second
========================================================================
another day, another turn
--------------------------------------------------------------------
[MRM]
now as you round the turn, there are trees and grass on your left
hand side, and brick walls on your right, the road really starts
to narrow here, as you approach this medium right hand turn
road condition : paved
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - after coming off the last turn, prepare to brake again,
but this time, turn to the right, you should go past the brick
wall on the right, and start speeding up for the next left turn
manual - downshift to 3rd again, and steer to the right, as soon as
you pass the top part of the brick wall on the right, shift to
4th and speed up, you should be able to get ready to take the
entire next left turn at full speed
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=======================================================================
recovery
--------
again, if you slam into the wall on the left, counter steer
to the right, and straighten up, accelerate genltly, but be prepared
to go full speed through the next left turn
penalty
--------
a few tenths of a second
=======================================================================
watch out for the wall
---------------------------------------------------------------------
[LEL]
after a short straightaway, a large rock cliff wall is on your left
hand side, on the right is a brick wall, but beyond that are sheer
cliffs of rocks, with spectators all over watching, the long easy left
turn shows up , and the narrow road only gives you a little
space to maneuver in.
road condition : paved
----------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - take the turn gently to the left, at full speed, you will
hear your tires sqeal , but don't oversteer or you will bump the
walls, and start losing control
manual - full speed ahead, stay on the inside to the left, and try to
almost hug the rock wall, your tires will sqeal but thats ok, maintain
speed and don't slow down!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
=========================================================================
recovery
--------
if you do start banging against the walls, don't start a
chain reaction, by oversteering to the left and right and left,
you will never be able to recover your speed, or finish the course!
gently after the first hit, brake slightly , steer towards the
middle of the road, center the car and accelerate again
penalty
-------
a few tenths of second or even more
==========================================================================
THE Killer instinct u-turn
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
[HR]
now for the really fun part, this is the make or break turn for this
course, after taking the last left turn, you are rapidly coming up
on the killer u-turn, there is an unpaved dirt shoulder to your left if
you oversteer, but a brick wall on the right, once again high
cliffs of rock, and plenty of spectators are around to watch
road condition : paved
----------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic
---------
before the turn approaches, start to brake moderately and
slide the car through the top part of the turn, begin to turn to
the right, and wait till the car passes the brick wall on the right,
once the car passes that, you should be facing straight forward, and
you can accelerate quickly again, be careful not to spin out as
this turn is the make or break one for this course!
manual
------
before the u-turn comes up, shift down to 2nd gear, and approach it
about 100 km/h (60 mp/h), as you slide turn to the right, and wait for the car
to go past the brick wall, as you should be facing forward, as soon
as you can shift to 3rd and then quickly to 4th to pick up speed,
be very careful as this turn is the make or break one for this course!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
=====================================================================
recovery
--------
this is one of the hardest turns in the whole game, if you don't spin
out you have a chance of recovering, it is much better to oversteer
to the left, and brake late, because that way at least you can
slip onto the dirt shoulder,on the left, and still not crash, from
there you try to regain control and straighten the car, by turning
to the right. if you had the misfortune of hitting the brick wall
and spinning out , you are in real trouble, and there's not a lot
you can do to recover, sorry.
penalty
-------
best case scenario - a few tenths of second
worst - you will not finish this course
=====================================================================
< checkpoint - time added? >
watch out for that tree, i mean turn
----------------------------------------------------------------------
[LML]
after driving through another long straightway , you will be decieved
by what looks like an easy left, but in fact it is a long medium left,
so watch out! there is a brick wall on the right side and a large
rock cliff on the left, this is one of those places that you will
see a lot of clipping if you to the right too far
road condition : paved
----------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - take the turn slower than full speed, brake slightly to
about 180 km/h (110 mp/h) and turn to the left, try not to bang against the
brick wall on the side, or you will be bumping off the cliff too!
after you get past the first part of the turn straighten up, and
get back to full speed again
manual - shift down to 3rd gear briefly, get past the apex of the turn
and turn towards the left, shift back up to 4th and quickly regain
full speed, as a short straightaway is next and then a left
----------------------------------------------------------------------
=====================================================================
recovery
--------
if you hit the wall on the right hand side, slow down, brake gently
steer the car to the right, and straighten up, don't oversteer!
apply acceleration and maintain speed
penalty
-------
still more tenths of a second
======================================================================
drivin' by some houses
----------------------------------------------------------------------
[EL]
now after that last turn, there is a break from the cliff on the left,
there is some open areas, with dirt and trees, and in the distance
some houses are rapidly approaching, on both sides of the road now
are houses, the road narrows and you take an easy left turn
road condition : paved
----------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - you should be going full speed now, so take this turn by
going to the left slightly, don't slow down no matter, this is a
prime spot to start overtaking other drivers
manual - stay in 4th, and continue to go full speed, as you round the
left turn, and be prepared to overtake other cars here, as they
have to slow down for the next few turns
----------------------------------------------------------------------
=====================================================================
recovery
--------
none needed, since this is a basic turn, just try to stay in the
center of the road and you will be fine
penalty
-------
none, because you won't crash here, unless another car bumps you
into the walls
====================================================================
<checkpoint - time added>
still going
----------------------------------------------------------------------
[ELM]
now this is where it starts to get interesting , after the last left
turn, you are still surrounded by houses, you will approach a small
chicane, where you can go straight through the easy right and easy
left, a medium left then you will hit a checkpoint, after that comes the
end of the houses and an medium right, there are fences and dirt with
trees on both sides of the road now, also tons of spectators view
this area
road condition : paved
---------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - take the turns at full speed, but stay as close to the
left as you possibly can, if you don't feel comfortable with this
apply a little brake as you swing to the left , but speed up
immeadiately
manual - stay in 4th the whole way, hug the inside left, and you will
be in good shape for the next series of turns
----------------------------------------------------------------------
======================================================================
recovery
--------
if you bang against the right wall here, its not to hard to get back
on the road, just steer to the left and center the car, accelerate
quickly to get back to top speed
penalty
-------
even more tenths of a second
=======================================================================
watch those turns
---------------------------------------------------------------------
[ML and MR]
now comes some of the more tricky turns, after passing the houses,
you now approach the final leg of the course, the roads are extra
wide here, so you have a lot of room to take the turns on, there
is dirt shoulders on both sides, and dirt and trees with fences
on either side of the road, plenty of spectators are around also
road condition : paved
---------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - first prepare to brake and take the first left turn,
you will need to slide through the next couple of turns, so
as you hear the tires sqeal get ready to straighten and
accelerate again, try not to go to far one way or the other
or you will go off the road, after the medium left, get ready
for a medium right, do the same thing, brake early , slide to
right, and turn, once you are out of it, accelerate quickly
to top speed
manual - you will have downshift to 3rd twice here, once after the
first medium left, and secondly once again after the next
medium right, try to go to 4th in between, and if the car
slips to far, brake and maybe go into 2nd gear (briefly)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
=====================================================================
recovery
--------
try to swing out to the left or right shoulders if you can't make
the turn, at least that way you won't crash, brake if you take
the turns at too high a rate, and straighten out as quick as
possible
penalty
-------
a few more tenths of a second
==================================================================
almost done?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[ELM and ELM]
the next series of turns are part of a chicane , so the easy left
and again an easy left (maybe), can be taken by just going straight through,
once again, you have an unpaved shoulder on both sides, though
the dirt forms a wall at the end that you can crash into, there
are trees in the dirt, and plenty of spectators around
road condition : paved
------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - this is easy, just go full speed ahead straight through
manual - just go full speed ahead straight through
------------------------------------------------------------------
one more.
------------------------------------------------------------------
[LMR]
the first in a hard series of turns is this one, dirt hills and
spectators surround both sides of the road, prepare to take
a long medium right turn.
road condition paved.
------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - approach the turn quickly, start braking and turning to
the right, adjusting your turn rate as you go,
start speeding up just as you pass the end of the
turn and go full speed ahead straight through
manual - shift down to 3rd , brake, steer to the right, and
quickly shift back to 4th and accelerate through
------------------------------------------------------------------
==================================================================
recovery - brake gently and steer to get back on the road as
quickly as possible
penalty - up to a second if you really mess up
==================================================================
don't crash now
------------------------------------------------------------------
[HL]
this is another hard left turn, that has dirt on both sides of
road, also a fenced off area with dirt and trees are there.
this is the last hard turn you have to take
road condition : paved
------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - brake moderately until you are at about 100 km/h and (60 mp/h)
steer over to the left, as you slide make sure you don' spin out
or you are history, most people get to this turn, and then they
can't quite finish it, if you work on perfecting this turn, you
will finish it almost every time
manual - shift down to 2nd and about 110 km/h (68mp/h) , turn to the left
and slide through the turn going from the far right apex to center
to the near left side, as you straighten out for the next turn,
a left approaches, if you feel like pushing this turn , try taking
it in third
-------------------------------------------------------------------
===================================================================
recovery
--------
if you don't wipe out on the right side, but bump the wall
you can still try to correct you angle of turn and stay on the road
however, at this stage, any kind of crash, may prevent you from
coming in first, or finishing the race!
penalty
-------
a couple of tenths of a second to not finishing
====================================================================
almost there...done!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
[EL]
well now that made it through the last left turn, don't relax
just yet, because there's one last left with a small-s turn
that you have to go through, the dirt shoulders end, and you
see buildings and houses coming up on both sides, a banner
overhead indicates the final checkpoint and end of the
race
------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - full speed ahead, and take the left easily
manual - full speed aheda, and take the left easily
------------------------------------------------------------------
===================================================================
recovery - none needed, if you want to , for fun, right before you
cross the finish line, spin the car out as you go over it. you
will still finish the race (but not on the first lap in practice
mode!)
penalty - none, because you won't crash
===================================================================
-this is the final course for the championship.
- end credits are still shots again
1) hills at the starting
2) the u-turn
3) the turns in the city
4) the final stretch
- after this you get the driver enter initials if your times are
fast enough
- this is the last lap of the championship course
- read the next section to see what happens if you finish 1st
- i think this course is easier than the second one, if you are
in 4th when you start, you should be able to finish first, and
you will need times like 1:11'00 or less.

q: how do you finish the championship course and what is it?
a: basically you get to race one lap of each course , one after
the either, beginning with the easy, then moderate , and finally
the expert, the thing is though, depending on how much time
you had at the end of each one, determines how much extra
time you get later, read the above descriptions to see how to
do one lap of each and practice practice practice.

strategy
--------
first lap - see above for desert, but you really need to
finish in 10th, or 9th , or SORRY you might
as well forget it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
second lap -
The key is to finish each track in the correct position, so
when you finally reach expert, you should be in 4th place
when you start. If you are in 4th, and run a good race you
*SHOULD BE* (not always) able to catch up and beat the first
place car.
I sometimes would mess up in the previous courses and I could only
start in 5th place and if that happens there is NO way I could catch
up to the 1st place car, even if I ran a perfect race on expert, the
best I could get then is 2nd place because the 1st place car is just
too far ahead.
third lap - 1st of course, no really!
actually....
overtake cars as quickly as possible, if you're not in
1st by the time you get to the last set of 3 or 4 turns
SORRY, try again.
- if you do come in first, you get to race a new course,
the lakeside, at this time, we think its only one lap,

dd) lakeside course
If you finish 1st and only 1st on the expert track in the
championship mode, you get a surprise .... a BONUS
TRACK called--"LakeSide.
In general, it's complete dirt, no paved surfaces, a TON of medium
rights and lefts and several hard rights and lefts. And if you actually
manage to get to lakeside, you only get about 1'15'XX MAX to finish it,
there are NO, repeat NO checkpoints! If you crash once you MIGHT still
be able to finish it, but bump 2 more walls and your history.
here is the final course guide
----------------------------------
- this course could be in some part of the countryside anywhere in the
world? how about scotland? what do you think?
- you are driving through a country road, none of them are paved, you pass
hills and fields, and the sun is setting, fall colors are all around you
as you see the dusk approaching, lakes go by, bridges, and plenty of
dirt everywhere you look , lots of tire tracks too! as you approach the
final turn , spectators are waiting to cheer
- oh by the way, did i mention that the road is very narrow, there are
dirt hills on both sides, any car that overttakes you will hit you,
and you have no traction? just thought it might help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- NO checkpoints!
road conditions - ALL unpaved dirt , and mostly all medium turns and hard turns
< first and last checkpoint >
- 3 seconds to get ready to start
start turning now
--------------------------------------------------------
[MR]
you start off in a wooded area, with wooden fences on both sides
of the road, you will up quickly on medium right turn
road condition : unpaved / dirt
------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - peel out quickly and reach full speed, but then get
ready to brake moderately until you are at about 100 km/h and (60 mp/h)
steer over to the right, cut in early and slide out of it, and tap
the brakes to maintain control
manual - shift down to 3rd and about 110 km/h (68mp/h) , turn to the right
and slide through the turn going from the far left apex to center
to the near right side, as you straighten out for the next turn,
a left approaches
-------------------------------------------------------------------
===================================================================
recovery
--------
unfortunately, if you start hitting the wall, not only is this
going to mess you up, you will probably stop, get hit by the
car behind you, and lose incredible amounts of time,
the recovery technique for this turn , and every other turn
on this course , is TOO BRAKE ALL OVER THE PLACE AND SLOW DOWN
if you're going to hit something , hit it slowly, and you can
still get back up to speed, if you don't brake YOU WILL COME
TO A COMPLETE STOP AND YOU WILL BE DOOMED FOR THE REST OF THE
RACE (you might finish it if you don't touch another wall,
but why risk it?) if you're good enough to get here, you
really don't need this advice!
penalty
-------
a couple of tenths of a second to one to not finishing!
====================================================================
keep going, it gets worse - what? another medium left
---------------------------------------------------------
[ML] and [ML]
as you go around the corner a medium left comes up, there are
dirt hills on both sides, and lots of cool looking trees around
and of course you get to do it twice
road condition : unpaved / dirt
------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - steer over to the right, cut in early and slide out of it,
and tap the brakes to maintain control get ready to brake moderately until
you are at about 100 km/h and (60 mp/h), turn left and keep going
( do this twice) after the second time accelerate quickly.
manual - shift down to 2rd and about 70 km/h (42mp/h) , turn to the right
and slide through the turn going from the far left apex to center
to the near right side, then turn left , as you straighten out for the
next turn, do this twice, and then on the second time, shift
up to 3rd, and 4th

now for a jump and a run
---------------------------------------------------------
upward jump and straightaway
now we come to the nice easy easy easy stretch of the course
an upward jump and a loooooong straightaway, this is crucial
if you need to catch up to a car and make up some lost time,
there are green hills on both sides, and yes you can drive
on them! this time, there are fences further over, and birds
fly overhead about half way through it.don't forget to stay
in the middle of the road! and don't be looking at the
lake on the that's coming up, or all the green trees too.
------------------------------------------------------------------
automatic - full speed ahead, good place to overtake cars, and
make up lots of time
manual - same as automatic (3rd and then to 4th)

endings)
If you don't finish the track, you get an ending showing
1) various angle shots of the scenery at sunset.
But if you managed to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd on lakeside
you get the REAL ending (I think) it shows your car on
a platform with both drivers standing on the hood and crowds
cheering, then it shows clips of your racing at various
points through all 4 tracks, plus game credits.
2) you get a podium shot with your car and your driver and
your navigator/co-driver waving a bunch of flowers and
an attract mode style of jazzy music with moving graphics.

IV) Final stuff - Tricks / Rumors
a)q: any tricks yet?
a: not that i know of. i tried all the daytona tricks i could think of, except
for entering intials of other sega games, couldn't figure any out yet..??
but wait, there's more!
1) new informational view
----------- Trick 1--------------------------------------------------
Hold down START and VIEW when selecting car will get alternate view.
(No rear view mirror seconds clock in bottom righthand of screen along
with a split time based on best time the machine has in memory.
Figure is red if you are beating the best time (as well as shows minus
figure eg -0.80)
----------- Trick 2--------------------------------------------------
2) instant select screen
to get into the game without having to wait for the 10 second timer
(and have somebody jump in on you)
press brake , and gas simultaneously , insert coins, and hold
down both buttons (start and view) and BANG! instant select screen,
NO WAITING !
----------- Trick 3--------------------------------------------------
3) different car characteristics
to get different car capabilities (slides more easily)
press brake and gas, and while selecting you car (either one)
shift 1st/2nd/3rd/4th and you will hear a WHOOOSH! sound which
means you did it right, now the car handles differently as you
will soon see.
b) RRRYYYYYUUUUUMMOOORRSS
1) supposedly you can get the lakeside course in practice mode
and no, completing the Championship is NOT the only way to get to it.
there _is_ a code involving the gearshifts on the stage select in
Practice mode - you have to keep the selector on Mountain, and
enter the gearshifts 1>2>3>4.
c) INFO-MATION
