<p> Years ago, says Liv Ullmann, relatives setting off from
Norway's fjords for a better life in the New World were thought
to be "brave and strong." Today similar dreams are "ridiculed
and shamed." The actress made that comparison last week in an
emotional speech at a Hong Kong refugee camp, where thousands
of Vietnamese boat people are facing a forced return to their
homeland. It was one of many visits she has made to Southeast
Asian camps since 1980 for international organizations, and it
miffed local officials, who accused her of being a do-gooder
who only came to criticize.
