  17. <p>     It was another nail-biting week for the number crunchers at
  18. Ernst & Young. America's biggest accounting firm tentatively
  19. agreed to pay some $40 million to the Federal Government for
  20. faulty work done by a predecessor firm, Arthur Young & Co., on
  21. behalf of Charles Keating's failed Lincoln Savings. The
  22. settlement could be a bargain: it should keep Ernst from being
  23. named in a $2 billion government fraud-and-racketeering suit
  24. stemming from Lincoln's collapse.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     But the accounting firm barely has time to celebrate. The
  27. SEC is investigating whether 36 Young partners improperly
  28. borrowed money from Republicbank of Dallas. Some of them had
  29. audited the bank (and certified it healthy) a year before it
  30. also crumbled.
