<p> DIED. Michael Powell, 84, pioneering British film director;
in Avening, England. After an apprenticeship with Alfred
Hitchcock, Powell launched a career of remarkable diversity and
experimentation. He was best known for the 1948 ballet film The
Red Shoes. He also crafted Black Narcissus (1947) about the
fantasies of Anglican nuns in the Himalayas, the war epic 49th
Parallel (1941) and Peeping Tom (1959), a portrait of a
sadistic photographer.
