  17. <p>Researchers discover the gene that causes Lou Gehrig's disease
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     Pages are being added to the book of genetics at an
  20. accelerating pace these days. Researchers announced that they
  21. have identified a defective gene that appears to cause
  22. amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's
  23. disease. About 30,000 Americans suffer from the disorder, which
  24. causes degeneration of the nerves that carry signals to muscles.
  25. The trouble in some cases, scientists reported in Nature,
  26. apparently lies in the gene that directs production of an enzyme
  27. that mops up free radicals. These substances are metabolism's
  28. nasty residue.

  30. <p>     In the same journal, scientists revealed that multiple
  31. sclerosis, the crippling nervous-system disease, may be linked
  32. to white blood cells with a specific genetic rearrangement.
  33. These white cells seem to destroy the sheath that surrounds
  34. nerves and protects their ability to conduct messages.
  35. </p>
  36. <p>     As researchers are finding out how genes cause illness,
  37. they are also working on genetic cures. A federal panel approved
  38. a new trial of an experimental gene therapy for brain cancer.
  39. Doctors take a gene from the herpes virus and insert it into
  40. tumor cells. They then zap the cells with an antiviral drug that
  41. attacks the herpes gene--and thus the tumor.
