  15. <p>     DIED. Lee Atwater, 40, former chairman of the Republican
  16. National Committee; of complications from a brain tumor; in
  17. Washington. A savvy political strategist who managed George
  18. Bush's 1988 presidential campaign, Atwater was often criticized
  19. for his "pit bull" style. It was his idea to use Willie Horton,
  20. a convicted murderer who raped a woman after failing to return
  21. to a Massachusetts prison following a weekend furlough, to
  22. derail Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis. An accomplished
  23. guitarist and blues singer, Atwater was featured on last year's
  24. R.-and-B. album Red Hot & Blue.
