<p> DIED. JEROME LEJEUNE, 67, French geneticist; of lung cancer;
in Paris. In 1959 Lejeune produced a landmark paper that traced
the origins of the mental and physical handicaps of Down syndrome
to an extra chromosome in those who have the condition. A vocal
opponent of abortion, Lejeune was selected by Pope John Paul
II to head the recently formed antiabortion Pontifical Academy
for Life.
