  17. <p>     CHANNEL HOPPING? Ted Koppel's contract with ABC expires at
  18. the end of this year, and colleagues say he is being wooed
  19. mightily by CBS to replace Dan Rather. Koppel is very close to
  20. CBS News President David Burke, a former ABC executive who
  21. helped negotiate his current lucrative contract. CBS would be
  22. willing to tailor its evening news to Koppel's on-camera
  23. strengths, emphasizing interviews over canned news items--a
  24. change that would set CBS's offering apart from its rivals'.
  25. Koppel has never craved an evening anchor post, but the chance
  26. to re-invent the format could prove irresistible. A spokeswoman
  27. says, "No one but Ted and his wife knows what his plans are
  28. when his contract expires."
