  17. <p>     Amid the desolation of economic collapse, the Soviet
  18. aerospace industry has come up with an apparent winner. Flown
  19. by a crack new aerobatic team from Moscow, MiG-29 Fulcrum-D jet
  20. fighters dazzled spectators at a French air base last month with
  21. demonstrations of the Soviet-invented "cobra" maneuver. In a
  22. chilling imitation of a striking snake, the aircraft rockets
  23. upward from a standing start, slows to a near standstill as the
  24. pilot pulls its nose just past the 90 degrees point, flies
  25. backward in that position and then snaps forward again and
  26. resumes normal flight. U.S. military officers dismiss the
  27. maneuver as impractical for combat, but the sleek blue-and-white
  28. fighters are expected to star at this month's Salon Aero
  29. nautique Espace in Paris.
