By Emily Mitchell/Reported by Wendy Cole

After Deng Xiaoping and Jimmy Carter finished their official
White House talks in 1979, China's Vice Premier turned to other
matters. He was, said the former President in last week's issue
of Christian Century, "infatuated" with Carter's religious
faith. The Communist leader even promised to permit Bibles back
into China and see about legal changes to allow religious
freedom. But when Carter asked if he'd consent to the return
of Western missionaries, Deng refused. They were "arrogant,"
he said, and had caused "great disturbances."
