<p> DIED. Robert Noyce, 62, co-inventor of the integrated
circuit and a founder of Intel Corp., whose microprocessors
dominate the personal-computer industry; of a heart attack; in
Austin. Noyce's microchips permitted an electronic
miniaturization that, in addition to personal computers, led
to such commonplace wonders as pocket calculators, video games
and antilock brakes. After a 32-year career pioneering the
development of California's Silicon Valley, Noyce moved in 1988
to Austin to head Sematech, a government and industry research
consortium working to keep the U.S. apace with Japan in
semiconductor manufacturing technology.
