  19. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, 63, is prefect of the Vatican's
  20. Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and thus guardian
  21. of church orthodoxy for 900 million Roman Catholics. It is said
  22. that Pope John Paul II makes no important decisions without
  23. consulting Ratzinger, who was born in Marktl am Inn, Bavaria.
  24. Conservatives are grateful to have the brilliant theologian as
  25. an ally in the Vatican; liberals like to suggest that he stands
  26. to the right of Torquemada.
