  17. <p>     It's happened to lawyers, doctors and other licensed
  18. professionals, but it had never happened to an opera star until
  19. last week. That's when a New York State appeals court ruled that
  20. world-class mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade must share with
  21. her ex-husband Peter Elkus any career income earned during their
  22. 17-year marriage. The ruling defined Von Stade's career and
  23. celebrity status as "marital property," entitling Elkus, the
  24. singer's voice coach and adviser during her rise to stardom, to
  25. a chunk of Von Stade's earnings.
