  17. <p>     Employers beware: discrimination against pregnant workers can
  18. be costly. AT&T agreed last week to pay $66 million in the largest
  19. settlement ever of a lawsuit brought by the Equal Employment
  20. Opportunity Commission. The money will compensate 13,000
  21. current and former AT&T employees for job discrimination against
  22. pregnant women from 1965 to 1978. The company forced the women
  23. to take unpaid maternity leaves, awarded those employees less
  24. seniority than others on disability and gave them no guarantee
  25. that they could return to their jobs or equivalent positions.
  26. "A suit of this magnitude will have tremendous ripple effects,"
  27. predicts Patricia Ireland, executive vice president of the
  28. National Organization for Women. "Every CEO who reads these
  29. headlines will pay attention."
