<p> DIED. Robert Anderson, 79, Texas lawyer and oilman who
served as Dwight Eisenhower's Navy Secretary from 1953 to 1954
and Treasury Secretary from 1957 to 1961; in New York City. Ike
urged Anderson to be his running mate in 1956 and to try for the
G.O.P. presidential nomination in 1960. Citing his political
inexperience, Anderson refused both times. His life turned
upside down in the 1980s, when he pleaded guilty to charges of
tax evasion and operating an illegal offshore bank in the West
Indies. He served one month in prison.
