  17. <p>     Janis Joplin became a legendary pop diva without ever
  18. going image shopping. Her impassioned defiance possessed a raw
  19. sincerity. But equally genuine was the tough-talking singer's
  20. penchant for self-destruction, a trait that has always made it
  21. impossible to think of Janis Joplin apart from a hazy world of
  22. pills and Southern Comfort. Now a biography by her younger
  23. sister Laura Joplin provides a kinder, gentler perspective on
  24. the electrifying crooner. Included are touching letters Janis
  25. wrote to her family during the 1960s. In them she talks about
  26. her dog, asks for a Betty Crocker cookbook and lovingly details
  27. her life in the California music scene ("Guess who was in town
  28. last week--Paul McCartney!!! And he came to see us!!! Sigh!").
  29. Laura Joplin unearthed the letters in 1988. "It was a very
  30. powerful experience," she said. "Kind of like meeting Janis
  31. again."
