  15. headlines as a teenage pilot in May 1987 when he flew a Cessna
  16. 172 over 500 miles of Soviet territory to land at Moscow's Red
  17. Square; for an alleged assault on a student nurse; in Hamburg.
  18. According to police reports, Rust stabbed the nurse after she
  19. resisted his advances. He told interviewers this year that he
  20. chose civilian over military service because he was opposed to
  21. violence.
