<p> DIED. Clement F. Haynsworth Jr., 77, federal appeals-court
judge whose nomination by Richard Nixon to the U.S. Supreme
Court was rejected by the Senate in 1969; in Greenville, S.C.
Although the Senate Judiciary Committee voted for Haynsworth's
nomination to a seat vacated by Abe Fortas, the full Senate
turned him down 55 to 45 after civil rights groups and labor
charged he was insensitive to minorities and working people. He
continued to serve as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals
for the Fourth Circuit before retiring to senior judge status
in 1981.
