  20. step toward slashing a projected $55 billion deficit. President
  21. Francois Mitterrand named Gaullist Deputy Balladur to lead the
  22. government following elections that gave the conservative
  23. alliance 460 of the 577 National Assembly seats, leaving
  24. Mitterrand's Socialists with only 54 seats.
