  17. <p>The Navy takes a heavy rap in the Tailhook report on sexual
  18. harassment

  20. <p>     There were many officers but few gentlemen at the 1991
  21. Tailhook convention in Las Vegas. A Pentagon report released last
  22. week found that 83 women and seven men were forcibly groped,
  23. stripped, bitten on the buttocks or made to drink from the
  24. phallus of a fake rhinoceros during the three-day, semiofficial
  25. bacchanal. Navy and Marine aviators lured women down a gauntlet
  26. of drunken officers who molested them; some walked through the
  27. Las Vegas Hilton exposing their testicles or ran naked around
  28. the pool. The report is full of lurid new details about the
  29. scandal, but it may not be the whole story. Investigators
  30. believe "several hundred" of the naval officers interviewed
  31. concealed information and 51 others lied outright. Pentagon
  32. Deputy Inspector General Derek Vander Schaaf has sent files on
  33. 140 officers to Navy and Marine Corps commands for possible
  34. disciplinary action. And 35 other top brass who attended the
  35. convention, including Acting Secretary of the Navy Admiral Frank
  36. Kelso, could be punished for failing to prevent the sexual
  37. assaults.
