  17. <p>A Supreme Court ruling on customer lists could cost the IRS
  18. billions
  19. </p>
  20. <p>     To the list of whatever other reasons one company would want
  21. to buy another with a fat customer list, add one more: a big tax
  22. break. In a decision that could cost Uncle Sam billions, the
  23. Supreme Court voted 5 to 4 to allow the purchaser to depreciate
  24. the value of the customer lists it acquires if it can show they
  25. have a limited useful life. The opinion affirmed the Newark
  26. Morning Ledger Co.'s right to depreciate 460,000 subscriptions
  27. (valued at $68 million) that were obtained through the purchase
  28. of a chain of Michigan newspapers; the Justices knocked down IRS
  29. interpretations that treat such "intangible assets" as
  30. nondepreciable "goodwill." The ruling will benefit many other
  31. acquisitions, from bank deposits to pharmacy prescription files.
