  16. <p>A new drug could save some men from prostate surgery
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    For the 10 million mostly older American men who suffer
  19. from enlargement of the prostate, the condition brings frequent
  20. and sometimes painful urination and is usually treated by
  21. surgical removal of the gland. But surgery carries the risk of
  22. impotence and loss of bladder control -- along with the
  23. unpleasantness of the operation itself. That explains the
  24. fanfare with which Merck & Co. announced it had just won
  25. approval from the Food and Drug Administration for a new drug,
  26. Proscar, that can shrink prostates without surgery.
  27. </p>
  28. <p>    Can is the operative word. Only one-third of the subjects in
  29. clinical trials showed a clear benefit from taking Proscar,
  30. while another third showed limited improvement and the rest
  31. none at all. Moreover, Proscar can interfere with a blood test
  32. that is widely used for early detection of prostate cancer, so
  33. doctors have to be doubly alert. Still, considering that
  34. prostate surgery sometimes has to be repeated a few years later,
  35. Proscar (and a variety of other drugs being tested for FDA
  36. approval) could mean good news for patients -- and big profits
  37. for Merck.
